B.C. downgrades status of two major wildfires in northeast
Two of the three most significant wildfires in British Columbia have been downgraded and are no longer considered fires of note. They include the 263-square-kilometre Kiskatinaw River wildfire in northeastern B.C., which was deemed on Wednesday to be no longer out of control. The Pocket Knife Creek wildfire northwest of Fort. St. John, the biggest blaze in B.C. at more than 1,500 square kilometres, has also lost wildfire-of-note status, having earlier been removed from the out-of-control stage. Both fires are now considered to be held, meaning they aren't expected to grow beyond current perimeters, as fire crews get support from heavy rain in northeastern B.C. Outdated forestry rules increase wildfire risk, B.C. Forest Practices Board says That leaves the 800-square-kilometre Summit Creek wildfire burning out of control in the northeast as the province's only fire of note – indicating that either homes are threatened or it's highly visible. The BC Wildfire Service says there is a risk of thunderstorms across central and northern B.C. on Thursday, but the province will see cooler temperatures starting Friday and into the weekend with some areas expected to get heavy rain. There are currently about 85 wildfires actively burning in B.C.

A rockslide at Bow Glacier Falls in Banff National Park has hit a number of hikers, causing at least one death, CTV has learned. RCMP confirmed the incident on Thursday afternoon. Parks Canada is aware of the incident. There are multiple people involved in the incident, and it's expected there are dozens injured. At least one death is expected, officials say. Emergency services have been dispatched. STARS air ambulance is on the way. No other details are available at this time. This is a developing story. More information will be added as it becomes available.

After severe thunderstorms moved through southwestern Manitoba Wednesday, more are expected to develop in the region Thursday that could produce tornadoes. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued tornado watch Thursday for all areas within the Virden, Minnedosa and Dauphin regions. ECCC said a low pressure system will trigger severe thunderstorms in southeastern Saskatchewan Thursday afternoon that will move into southwestern Manitoba by early evening. The weather agency said conditions are favourable for these severe thunderstorms to produce tornadoes. Hail up to six centimetres in size, wind gusts up to 100 km/h and heavy rain are also likely. Dry conditions continue in the north Thursday, including in wildfire-affected areas. Sunshine or a mix of sun and clouds, light winds, and highs in the upper-teens or low-twenties are all forecast for the afternoon. Air quality has improved enough Thursday that ECCC has issued no related alerts in Manitoba or northwestern Ontario, but that could change. The weather agency said smoke plumes from wildfires near Island Lake on the Ontario side, coupled with smoke from renewed Nopiming Provincial Park fires will spread south-southwest back into Manitoba before moving north Thursday. That could diminish air quality in the Interlake and east of Lake Winnipeg.
