The Lions were beaten at home in the URC on Sunday, going down 32-19 to Wales' Scarlets at Ellis Park.
It was a dismal performance from the hosts, who had discovered on Saturday night that there was no mathematical chance of them making the tournament playoffs.
This caps off another disappointing campaign for coach Ivan van Rooyen and his charges, who have never made the URC playoffs.
The Lions were 14-0 down inside 30 minutes and could never recover from that deficit.
