Fatal crash reported on night of fire that destroyed historic Caudill's Electrical Company building in Kernersville

Yahoo27-05-2025

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — A woman died in a crash in a stolen vehicle in Kernersville on Saturday night hours before a historic building burned down, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The building was recognized as a historical Kernersville structure, built in 1897 as the Harmon and Reid Mill before becoming Caudill's Electrical Company in recent years.
According to a press release from the Kernersville Fire Rescue Department, at 10 p.m., emergency personnel were still battling a 'commercial structure fire' at 208 East Bodenhamer Street.
At 2:50 a.m. Sunday, Kernersville Fire Rescue confirmed that more than 60 firefighters from multiple local agencies assisted with bringing the fire under control, including:
Winston-Salem Fire Department
Forsyth County Fire Department
Piney Grove Fire Department
Oak Ridge Fire Department
Union Cross Fire Department
Walkertown Fire Department
At the time of the fire, there was also a car crash in the area involving downed power lines.
FOX8 was told that around 9 p.m., Isabelle Rose Lawson, 25, was driving a stolen Chevrolet Corvette when she lost control and hit several power poles.
Lawson was the only one in the car. She was thrown from the car during the crash and died at the scene.
Kernersville police said their officers spotted the stolen car, but at this point in the investigation, it is unclear if there was a chase.
'This space is normally occupied by our security techs, and we have just kind of had to kick them out, so now you see admin staff in here and working,' said Dana Jones Caudill, the owner of CEC.
Every paper, piece of equipment and power chord is gone.
'Our main supply closet was across the street, and so we went to Staples to try to get some basic stuff we would need,' Caudill said.
Most of it is replaceable, but other items will live on only in their memories.
'It's the pictures of employees who have retired with us. It's our family photos,' Caudill said.
Caudill's family bought the former mill in 1978 when they started the company. CEC is an electrical contracting company that does security systems and cameras for homes and businesses in the Triad.
Caudill has also served the Kernersville community as an elected official and currently as a state senator. The community knows the Caudill family and has shown nonstop support since the fire.
'We really have a great community … That is the part that is kind of overwhelming,. It kind of gets you at times … We are just really grateful,' Caudill said.
It's her business, but the reality is that it's just a building.
'We are blessed that nobody was hurt,' Caudill said.
Just down the road, there is still debris left over from the crash that killed Lawson.
'It was a tragic accident that happened. Someone lost their life, and we lost a building, but someone lost a loved one, so we have to put that into perspective,' Caudill said.
CEC plans to rebuild its property as soon as the investigation wraps up. The Kernersville Fire Department said that it could take several weeks.
Caudill's released the following statement on Facebook Sunday morning regarding the fire.
Last night, we experienced a heartbreaking total loss at Caudill Electric as our building went up in flames. Watching it burn was incredibly difficult and left us feeling helpless — but even in the middle of the devastation, we are filled with gratitude.
We want to thank the Kernersville Fire Department and all of the first responders who worked tirelessly to contain the fire. While the building couldn't be saved, we are so thankful they were able to protect the surrounding properties and spare our neighbors from damage.
We are also incredibly proud of our amazing employees, many of whom came out to the scene last night to support and help in any way they could. To our loyal customers — thank you for your continued support and prayers. We're already working on a plan to be back in operation by Tuesday, and we are committed to continuing to serve you.
Please keep us in your prayers as we move forward. We know that God is good in all situations, and that's the truth we are holding onto at this moment.Caudill's (Facebook)
Kernersville Fire Rescue released the following update at 1:25 p.m. Sunday:
Fire crews completed overhaul operations and full extinguishment of hot spots this morning. Duke Energy has also finished repairs in the area, and the building was officially released back to the property owners at approximately 10:00 a.m. today. Bodenhamer Street has been reopened to regular traffic.
We are aware of various rumors circulating on social media, and we want to clarify that no injuries occurred to either emergency personnel or civilians during the fire at Caudill Electric.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Kernersville Fire Marshal's Office.

Engine Technology Forum Calls for Changes to California's Renewable Portfolio Standards Guidebook

Urges Inclusion of Renewable Diesel/HVO and Hydrogen for ICE Washington, D.C., June 05, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The following statement was issued today from Allen Schaeffer, Executive Director of the Engine Technology Forum, regarding the Forum's filing to the California Energy Commission's (CEC) open docket for the tenth edition of the Renewable Portfolio Standard Guidebook: 'California's ambitious energy and climate goals demand a full range of solutions of fuels and technologies that are able to reduce carbon emissions. The California Energy Commission's proposed revisions to the Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) Guidebook establishes new standards of eligibility for technologies and fuels to receive renewable energy credits for power generation. 'At a time when the affordability and availability of reliable energy in California are top of mind, the CEC's proposed revisions to the RPS Guidebook fall short of maximizing opportunities to lower energy costs and increase supply. 'This is due in part to the CEC's failure to explicitly recognize Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (HVO), also known as renewable diesel (RD), when used in power generation applications. Additionally, the CEC's consideration of the use of renewable hydrogen must be clarified to explicitly include all applications, not only fuel cells and linear generators but also hydrogen use in internal combustion engines for generators. 'Diesel generators remain a critical part of California's energy portfolio. This large, well-established fleet of installed power systems plays a vital role in providing backup power to public and private utilities, as well as critical institutions, during planned power safety shutoffs and other emergency situations. The use of hydrotreated vegetable oils in these units instead of fossil-based diesel delivers proven reductions of greenhouse gas and other emissions of at least 50-75%. These are significant reductions, and operators of these units should be eligible to generate renewable energy credits just like other power producers utilizing bio-based or alternative fuels. 'HVO/RD should receive explicit and specific recognition within the Guidebook revision for several reasons: HVO/RD is a key, proven fuel in achieving carbon reductions under California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard program, with renewable diesel now accounting for more than 70% of all diesel fuel used in the state. HVO/RD offers superior affordability compared to other low-carbon technologies – an especially important factor as energy costs continue to rise in California. There is widespread acceptance of HVO/RD among engine manufacturers and end users, particularly those deploying generator-based power systems across California. The refining sector is making significant investments to expand production of HVO/RD. HVO/RD offers a proven, immediately available solution to help California meet its greenhouse gas reduction commitments. 'In addition, the Guidebook Revision should clarify and explicitly recognize all applications to produce electricity using renewable hydrogen, from fuel cells and linear generators to internal combustion engines. Engine manufacturers are developing and starting to deploy hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines today in limited heavy-duty on and off-road applications. The use of renewable hydrogen offers another important option for hard-to-decarbonize sectors of the economy such as power generation.' Triad conservationist warns of tick dangers after hospitalization: ‘I got really sick'

(WGHP) — Tick season lasts from early spring through fall, and ticks can have dire consequences if they aren't found. It can happen to even the most experienced outdoorsmen like Piedmont Land Conservancy Executive Director Kevin Redding. Redding has spent most of his life outside, not only with his work, but his hobbies are fly-fishing and hunting. Walking in nature has its rewards. 'The great part of my job is I get to spend a good amount of time outdoors. I get to hike properties, walk on greenways and walk in fields,' Redding said. And it also comes with risks. Among the blades of grass and bramble are little insects small enough to fit on a pencil, and they love to jump on people and pets. 'My experience was I got really sick a few weeks ago from what turned out to be a tick bite, but we didn't know that at the beginning,' Redding said. He underwent a battery of tests after ending up hospitalized before they landed on a diagnosis. 'I was fortunate because I knew I had a tick on me a week before,' he said. The tick had given him a bacterial infection called ehrlichiosis. He underwent treatment, which required antibiotics, and he's back to doing what he loves, but spreading the word that it can happen to anyone. 'Anytime you're out in vegetation … you need to wear light clothes. You need to spray. You need to check yourself really good afterwards … I do a really good job of that, and it still got me,' Redding said. There are multiple illnesses from ticks, including Lyme disease. 'If you get sick, and you've been anywhere close to outdoors, make sure your doctor knows it's in your history, so they can quickly test you for tick-borne illness,' he said. Here are the most venomous snakes to look out for in North Carolina and what to do if you get bitten The four types of ticks to be aware of in NC are: Black-legged tick (also known as deer tick) The lone star tick The American dog tick The Brown dog tick While the threat of Lyme disease is only found in black-legged ticks, which prefer spring and fall temperatures to summer, that doesn't mean there aren't other tick-borne diseases to be aware of. Rocky Mountain spotted fever is harmful to people and domestic dogs. It can be treated with antibiotics. If left untreated, it can sometimes cause death. The symptoms include: fever headache muscle pain vomiting possible rash A tick must be attached for at least six hours to transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and at least 24 hours to transmit Lyme disease, so checking yourself after any time spent in an environment that could have ticks is very important. If you've been in a grassy and wooded area, it's always a good idea to check for ticks in the first few hours after you get back and take a shower to possibly wash off any potential ticks. Insect repellents are effective as well and should be applied liberally. Trying to avoid tick-infested areas while picking a campsite? Use a piece of white fabric and brush it across the ground. If you get ticks on the fabric, pick a new place. If you get a tick on you, follow these steps to remove it: Use tweezers to grab the tick as close to the surface of your skin as possible. Pull up with steady pressure. Don't twist or jerk the tick since that can cause the mouth parts to break off and stay in your skin. If this happens, remove the mouth parts with tweezers. If you can't remove the mouth with tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal. After the tick has been removed, clean the bitten area with alcohol or wash it with soap and water. Never crush a tick, smother one with petroleum jelly or use a flame to try and get it to let go of you. Instead, flush it down the toilet, put it in a sealed bag, wrap it tightly in tape or put it in alcohol. It's also good to frequently check your pets for ticks, especially if they've been outside because they can get a variety of diseases such as: Lyme disease Rocky Mountain spotted fever canine ehrlichiosis anaplasma The CDC recommends talking to your veterinarian about the best tick prevention products for your dogs and making sure you know what kinds of ticks live in your area. Here are the most venomous snakes to look out for in North Carolina and what to do if you get bitten Ticks like to latch on to long-haired dogs, especially. Reducing the tick habitat in your yard is another great way to keep your pets safe from the bloodsuckers. Keep your yard mowed and free of leaf litter to avoid creating a prime environment for ticks. For large-scale infestations, pesticides can be used to cut down on the tick population. Be mindful of your use of pesticides and follow the instructions exactly. Don't let bitey little bugs ruin your summer. With the right preparations, ticks won't be a problem for you or your family. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
