SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Broadcom has begun to ship its latest networking chip that aims to speed AI, the company said on Tuesday.
The chip, called the Tomahawk 6, boasts double the performance compared with the prior version and other traffic control features that make the networking chip significantly more efficient, Ram Velaga, a Broadcom senior vice president, told Reuters in a Monday interview.
The speed boost means that fewer networking switches are needed to perform the same task, Velaga said.
Broadcom's networking chips have gained increased importance because of AI. When constructing the necessarydata centers for AI applications, infrastructure builders must string together hundreds or thousands of chips.
Building large-scale clusters of networked chips requires specialized networking gear and chips, of which the Tomahawk series of processors is one such component.
With the Tomahawk 6, Broadcom's engineers have boosted its speed and capabilities to the point where it can be used to construct the larger data centers that are necessary for AI, which can be over 100,000 graphics processors (GPUs) strung together, Velaga said.
"In a couple of years, you will start to see a million GPUs housed inside a physical building," he said.
Broadcom's networking chips use the Ethernet networking protocol, which has been anetworking standard for decades. Nvidia produces hardware that uses a rival tech called InfiniBand and several products based on Ethernet.
"All of these networks can be very simply done on Ethernet, you don't need esoteric technologies," Velaga said.
The Tomahawk 6 is the first product in that line that will use several chips combined into a single package, a tech known as chiplets that is widely adopted by other chip designers such as Advanced Micro Devices. Adding chiplets roughly doubled the amount of silicon area used in the design, Velaga said.
Broadcom is producing the Tomahawk switch on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's three nanometer process.

Gold gains for the week as US data fuels safe-haven bid

GOLD rose on Friday and was set for weekly gains, as a spate of soft U.S. economic data outweighed initial optimism over U.S. President Donald Trump's call with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, while investors awaited U.S. payroll data. Spot gold was up 0.3% at $3,363.33 an ounce, as of 0548 GMT. Bullion has gained 2.3% for the week so far. U.S. gold futures climbed 0.4% to $3,387. Trump and Xi engaged in a rare leader-to-leader call on Thursday, addressing escalating trade tensions and disputes over critical minerals, though key issues remain unresolved. 'Some of the initial enthusiasm for risk appetite following the Trump-Xi call has started to wear off, which has enabled gold to creep higher,' said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade. The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits increased to a seven-month high last week. Investors are now awaiting U.S. nonfarm payroll data, due at 1230 GMT, after a slew of data throughout this week highlighting labor market softness. Economists polled by Reuters forecast nonfarm payrolls increased by 130,000 jobs in May, while the unemployment rate is expected to remain steady at 4.2%. 'The upcoming NFP release could be the catalyst for a breakout should the data produce a significant miss on either side of expectations,' Waterer said. Federal Reserve policymakers indicated that inflation remains a greater concern than labor market cooling, suggesting a prolonged hold on monetary policy adjustments. Gold, often seen as a safe-haven asset, tends to perform well during economic uncertainty and in low-interest-rate environments. On the physical front, elevated gold prices dampened buying across major Asian hubs this week. Discounts in India hit their highest levels in over a month. Spot silver fell 0.7% to $35.92 per ounce, hovering near a 13-year high, while platinum rose 1.7% to $1,149.85 and palladium was up 0.7% at $1,012.60. All three metals were headed for weekly gains.

Thailand inflation remains negative in May; government cuts 2025 forecast

Image from The Nation Thailand/Asia News Neywork BANGKOK (Reuters): Thailand's annual inflation rate was negative for a second straight month in May, the commerce ministry said on Friday. The Thai government has now cut its full-year forecast to close to zero, just weeks ahead of the central bank's next monetary policy review. The consumer price index dropped 0.57% in May from a year earlier, not quite as steep as the 0.80% fall forecast in a Reuters poll, following a 0.22% fall in April. It was the third month in a row that the inflation rate has been below the central bank's target range of 1.0% to 3.0%. Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, head of the ministry's Trade Policy and Strategy Office, said a positive inflation reading was expected in June, but the forecast of 0.2% to 0.4% was still below the central bank's target. The ministry cut its full-year inflation forecast to 0.0% to 1.0% from 0.3% to 1.3% seen previously. Poonpong said prices fell in May due to lower energy prices and more production of agricultural goods such as vegetables. The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up 1.09% in May from a year earlier, higher than a forecast rise of 0.94%. For the first five months of the year, headline inflation averaged 0.48% and the core rate was at 0.95%, Poonpong said. In April, the Bank of Thailand cut its key interest rate by a quarter point to 1.75%, the lowest level in two years, and reduced its growth and inflation forecasts for 2025, due to risks from U.S. tariffs. The next rate meeting is on June 25. Deputy BOT Governor Piti Disyatat told Reuters last month the central bank was ready to ease policy again if needed to support Southeast Asia's second-largest economy through the global trade war. He said low inflation was not a reflection of weak domestic demand or deflation. Burning ship abandoned in Pacific carried several Chinese car brands

Ship carrying about 3,000 cars, including 800 EVs, has been abandoned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after catching fire. - Reuters EAST ASIA (Bloomberg): A cargo ship that was abandoned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after catching fire Tuesday was carrying cars from several Chinese automakers, according to people familiar with the matter. The Morning Midas was shipping around 3,000 cars from a range of manufacturers including Chery Automobile Co. and Great Wall Motor Co. to Mexico. It's unclear at this stage which brand's electric vehicle caught fire, the people said, who asked not to be identified discussing preliminary findings. The eastern Chinese city of Yantai, the port where the ship originated, also has a SAIC Motor Corp.-GM plant that produces the Buick Envision model, while the charterer of the vessel has been reported by local media to be Anji Logistics, a subsidiary of SAIC. Smoke was first seen coming from a deck of the vessel on Tuesday, whose cargo included about 800 EVs. The crew initiated firefighting procedures but the blaze couldn't be brought under control. Responders were deployed to support salvage and firefighting operations, the ship's manager Zodiac Maritime said in a statement. The US Coast Guard, which said the fire aboard the ship occurred approximately 300 miles south of Adak Island in Alaska, evacuated all 22 crew members and transferred them to a nearby merchant ship. Great Wall Motor had about 140 cars on the ship, although none of them were battery EVs and were not located at the deck where the fire started, one of the people said. A representative from Chery declined to comment. Great Wall Motor didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Calls and an email to Anji Logistics weren't answered. --With assistance from Sarah Chen and Katia Dmitrieva. ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.
