Nintendo Switch 2 debuts globally at $450; launch draws long lines in Tokyo, New York and cities worldwide

Mint2 days ago

From Tokyo's neon-lit shopping districts to Manhattan's bustling storefronts, thousands of Nintendo fans queued for hours, some even overnight, to be among the first to get their hands on the newly launched Nintendo Switch 2. The global debut has been described as one of the most significant tech rollouts in recent memory, reminiscent of Apple's early iPhone launches.
Eager customers began lining up as early as 4:30 AM outside GameStop's Union Square branch in New York, while a separate crowd formed at the Nintendo flagship store further uptown. In Tokyo, dedicated fans, including working professionals, cleared their schedules to join the launch-day rush. The console is priced at $450 (nearly Rs. 36,614) in most regions.
At the front of the New York line stood 22-year-old Christopher Evangelista—aka Chickendog—who had frequented the store for weeks in anticipation. 'I've always dreamt of being part of a launch like this,' he said while livestreaming and interacting with other fans. Adding star power to the event, SNL's Bowen Yang was seen chatting with Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser. Yang expressed excitement about revisitingMario Kart andZelda on the upgraded system.
The Switch 2 succeeds the original Switch, launched eight years ago, which introduced the hybrid gaming model. In Tokyo's Ikebukuro district, 54-year-old Koji Takahashi waited four hours outside Bi Camera Inc. to purchase the console. 'I grew up with their Game & Watch and hanafuda cards. Now, I just want to enjoy Mario Kart with my family,' he shared.
Nintendo's strategy for launch-day success leans heavily on global visibility and sales momentum. 'Nintendo has everything riding on this launch—failure simply isn't an option,' said Serkan Toto, CEO of gaming consultancy Kantan Games. However, the $450 price tag is already raising eyebrows. A special edition priced at ¥49,980 (roughly $350) is available in Japan. President Shuntaro Furukawa has hinted that rising tariffs and logistics costs could force future price hikes.
The portable gaming space is far more competitive than it was during the original Switch's launch. Devices like Valve's Steam Deck, Asus's ROG Ally, and Lenovo's Legion Go are already nibbling at Nintendo's market share. Meanwhile, Sony is rumoured to be developing a handheld that supports PlayStation 5 titles, posing another potential threat.
Despite the competition, the Switch 2 brings a host of improvements. Enhanced internal hardware allows the console to run more demanding PC and mobile games. It maintains backward compatibility with existing Switch titles, offering an instant game library. A newly introduced digital key-card system uses physical cartridges as authentication tokens, helping developers reduce production costs and streamline distribution.
Nintendo is also raising the bar on game pricing. Flagship title Mario Kart World will launch at $80—the highest-ever price for a Nintendo game. This signals a new pricing standard in premium console gaming.
While in-house titles continue to define Nintendo's identity, experts warn that long-term success depends heavily on third-party support. Big names likeCall of Duty and top RPG franchises are essential to keeping the console relevant. Studios like Capcom and Square Enix have increasingly shifted focus toward PC via platforms like Steam. 'If Nintendo fails to deliver a strong ecosystem, the migration of developers to PC will only accelerate,' warned Naoko Kino, head of developer support firm Kyos Co.

Apple's growing list of problems clouds AI reboot

It says something about Apple's current status that its trailing position in artificial intelligence isn't the company's biggest problem. It might seem to be next week, though. Investors are glum ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference that kicks off Monday. The stock has slid 20% since the first of the year, which is the worst run the shares have experienced ahead of the company's WWDC event since at least 2010. Apple's big tech peers now use their own annual developer events almost exclusively to tout their progress in AI. But Apple's conference this year is expected to mainly demonstrate how far behind the company is in what is considered a once-in-a-generation technological shift. The Apple Intelligence service introduced at last year's conference is still a work in progress, and the Siri digital assistant is still awaiting a promised AI makeover. That won't be coming next week, at least based on a rare admission Apple made three months ago that its planned Siri upgrade was taking longer than expected. 'Apple will be much more cautious about overpromising and will refrain from showing features that aren't yet ready for prime time," Craig Moffett of MoffettNathanson predicted in a report Thursday. But AI is only one of the significant problems Apple is facing now. Tariffs threaten the profit margins of the company's hardware business. And the president of the U.S. is openly pressuring Apple to effectively undo its two-decade-old business model of exclusively producing its devices overseas. Then there is services, which drive an outsize portion of Apple's bottom line. Legal challenges hang over the fees the company earns from app developers, as well as the payments it receives from Google to make the search engine the default option on Apple's devices. Those fees and payments together comprise a substantial part of Apple's services arm that generates annual gross profit margins of 74%—twice the margins the company's device business commands. 'We caution that Apple has material risks to its revenue growth, margins, and valuation multiple," Needham analyst Laura Martin wrote in a report on Wednesday, where she downgraded the stock to a 'hold" rating. Against the risk of tariffs, App Store fee reductions and the loss of Google payments, Apple's slow start in AI seems almost a minor worry. The company hasn't been marketing Apple Intelligence as a premium service that would cost users extra—a notable contrast to the approach of Microsoft and Alphabet's Google, which are charging money for most of the generative AI tools sold to their customers. But Apple needs to give customers more reasons to buy its devices, and upgrade them more frequently. Its flagship iPhone business has been in a rut, with revenue growth relatively flat over the past two years and expected to be flat again for the current fiscal year ending in September. The lack of new AI offerings is expected to weigh on the next cycle as well, with Wall Street expecting iPhone revenue growth of only 3% in fiscal 2026, according to FactSet estimates. 'We believe that, for this stock to work, it must have the catalyst of an iPhone replacement cycle, which we do not foresee in the next 12 months," Needham's Martin wrote in her report. Apple has a lot of very loyal customers—more than 2.35 billion active devices make up its installed base—who won't necessarily bail over a single piece of missing software. But the company that disrupted the smartphone market could be disrupted itself if generative AI creates a new class of devices that obviate the need for a touch screen slab in everyone's pocket. OpenAI just nabbed Jony Ive, the famed Apple designer who crafted the original versions of most of Apple's current product line, as part of an ambition to eventually ship 100 million 'AI companions." The first devices are expected to come out next year. The famously secretive Apple could very well spring some of its own surprises by then. But it will have to do so while juggling its global supply chain and deftly navigating the legal challenges to its App Store fees and Google payments. Apple isn't even officially a party to the Google case, which might limit its options to shape the outcome. Apple's slow start in AI is a problem, but compared to its other challenges, at least it is more under its control.

‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' box office collections day 21: Film inches closer to Rs 100 cr mark: Strong hold into the third week

'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' continues its steady run at the Indian box office, collecting Rs 66 lakhs (early estimates) on its 21st day. Despite entering its third Friday, the Tom Cruise-led action franchise has managed to retain a decent footfall, pushing its total India net collection to an estimated Rs 94.86 crore across all languages. While the pace has slowed, the film is now eyeing the Rs 100 crore milestone in the coming days. Occupancy Trends on Day 21 According to the Sacnilk website, the film recorded an overall 18.53% English occupancy on June 6, 2025, with night shows showing the best performance at 28.99%. Morning shows remained low at 9%, with a gradual increase through the afternoon and evening. The Hindi version saw slightly lower traction, with an overall occupancy of 14.43%. Night shows again led with 19.78%, while morning shows stood at just 7.24%. While regional versions in Telugu and Tamil have contributed marginally to the collections, the bulk of the business continues to come from the English and Hindi versions, particularly in urban centres. Three Weeks of Consistency After a solid first week collection of Rs 54.4 crore, the film held decently in its second week with Rs 26.75 crore. The third week, although registering a 51% drop from the second, still added Rs 13.05 crore to the total. The weekday collections remained under ₹1 crore but were consistent enough to maintain momentum. Sustains its brand value 'The Final Reckoning', which started with a stellar Rs 17 crore opening weekend, continues to benefit from strong brand recall, slick action, and Tom Cruise 's star power. The third weekend will be crucial to see if it can surpass the Rs 100 crore mark domestically.
