Snap to launch smart glasses for users in 2026 in challenge to Meta

(Reuters) -Snap will launch its first-ever smart glasses for all consumers next year, ratcheting up competition with bigger rival Meta in the wearable technology market. The augmented reality smart glasses, called Specs, will be lightweight, the social media company said on Tuesday. Long known for its messaging app Snapchat and animated filters, Snap has been doubling down on AR, which can overlay digital effects onto photos or videos of real-life surroundings through a camera or lens. Integrating technology into wearable products can open up new lucrative markets and diversify revenue streams for Snap amid an uncertain digital ad market due to changing U.S. trade policies. The company had launched its 5th generation of Spectacles glasses in September, but these were only available to developers. The company has invested more than $3 billion over 11 years developing its augmented reality glasses, Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel said at the Augmented World Expo 2025 on Tuesday. "Before Snapchat had chat, we were building glasses." The popularity of Meta's Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica have prompted companies such Google to explore similar investments. Meta continues to add AI features to its glasses to attract more consumers. Snap said it would partner with augmented reality and geospatial technology platform Niantic Spatial to enhance the Lens Studio, which is an application used by creators to design, animate and publish AR lenses for Snapchat camera, and Specs. Judge rejects class action for Google privacy lawsuit

FILE PHOTO: The logo of Google is shown on a building in San Diego, California, U.S., October 9, 2024. REUTERS/Mike Blake/File Photo (Reuters) -People who accused Google of illegally collecting their personal information, after they chose not to synchronize their Google Chrome browsers with their Google accounts, cannot sue the Alphabet unit as a group in a class action, a U.S. judge ruled. In a decision on Monday, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California agreed with Google that it was appropriate to address case-by-case whether millions of Chrome users understood and agreed to its data collection policies. "Inquiries relating to Google's implied consent defense will overwhelm the damages claims for all causes of action," Rogers wrote. She dismissed the proposed damages class action with prejudice, meaning it cannot be brought again. The judge also said Chrome users cannot seek policy changes as a group. David Straite, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, declined to comment on Tuesday. Sandi Knight, vice president of litigation at Google, in a statement said the company appreciated the decision, and that Chrome Sync has "clear privacy controls." Class actions let plaintiffs seek potentially greater recoveries at lower cost than they could in individual lawsuits. The decision followed a ruling last August by the federal appeals court in San Francisco, which said Rogers should consider whether reasonable Chrome users consented to letting Google collect their data when they browsed online. Chrome users pointed to Chrome's privacy notice, which said they "don't need to provide any personal information to use Chrome" and Google would not collect such information unless they turned on the "sync" function. Rogers had dismissed the case in December 2022. She said she oversees two other privacy cases against Mountain View, California-based Google, but the claims in those cases differed "significantly." The appeals court ruling followed Google's 2023 agreement to destroy billions of records to settle a lawsuit claiming it tracked people who thought they were browsing privately, including in Chrome's "Incognito" mode. The case is Calhoun et al v Google LLC, 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 22-16993. (Reporting by Jonathan Stempel in New YorkEditing by Bill Berkrot)

FBM KLCI rebounds in early trade on U.S.-China trade optimism

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI surged in early Wednesday trade, lifted by optimism over U.S.-China trade talks, as investors awaited further developments. In London, negotiators from Washington and Beijing said they had 'agreed a framework on trade' to present to their leaders, Reuters reported. The FBM KLCI rebounded sharply, climbing 11.58 points, or 0.76%, to 1,528.49 as of 9:18 a.m., after opening 3.91 points higher at 1,520.86. Inter-Pacific Research noted that the key index seems to have found support just above the psychological 1,500 level and is likely to hold steady in the near term. This comes as market participants remain focused on the ongoing U.S.-China trade talks, which are still at a standstill following another round of inconclusive overnight negotiations. Nevertheless, the research house said the FBM KLCI is likely to head higher, as a mild upside bias may persist over the near term, partly supported by optimism that a trade deal between the U.S. and China could be reached. 'At the same time, the selling pressure is also easing somewhat and should allow for more bargain hunting to emerge for now. 'On the upside, there are resistances at the 1,523-1,525 levels and 1,530 points respectively. The supports, meanwhile, are at 1,510 and 1,503 points respectively,' Inter-Pacific said. Meanwhile, Rakuten Trade observed that in the absence of fresh incentives, there has been little appeal for traders to engage with the local bourse, leading to waning interest and subdued trading activity in recent months. 'Even the IPOs were not spared as most registered marginal gains at best. 'For today, we expect the index to hover within the 1,510-1,520 range,' it said. On the local bourse, Nestle jumped 78 sen to RM75.78, PETRONAS Dagangan added 38 sen to RM20.92, United Plantations gained 30 sen to RM21.96 and Allianz rose 26 sen to RM19.38. Country View slid 11 sen to RM2.25, F&N declined eight sen to RM27.72, Carlsberg fell four sen to RM19.68 and Hong Leong Industries lost four sen to RM13.54. Overnight, the S&P 500 climbed 0.55% to end the session at 6,038.81 points. The Nasdaq gained 0.63% to 19,714.99 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.25% to 42,866.87 points.
