Several once-highly ranked teams enter conference tournament week in need of wins to make NCAA field

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — This was a time early in the season when Kansas seemed to be an insurmountable juggernaut, full of high-profile transfers such as Zeke Mayo and AJ Storr, All-American candidates such as Hunter Dickinson and veterans accustomed to winning.
They were the preseason No. 1 in the AP Top 25. And for several weeks, the Jayhawks played like it.
But things hardly went according to script the rest of the season. They lost to longtime rival Missouri in a non-conference game, and dropped rare home games to West Virginia, Houston and Texas Tech. They plummeted out of the Top 25 altogether, ending a run of 80 consecutive weeks in the poll, and tumbled down the Big 12 standings.
Now, they enter their conference tournament as the No. 6 seed. And perhaps most importantly, they could be staring at the same seeding — or worse — in the NCAA tourney, where coach Bill Self's teams have never been worse than a No. 4.
'I think we're talented enough. We were the preseason No. 1 team in the country for a reason,' Dickinson said after a confidence-boosting win over Arizona on Saturday. 'We have the talent. But it's just a matter of going out there and showing it.'
They will get their chance beginning Wednesday, when they play Utah or UCF in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament.
Kansas isn't the only once-highly ranked team trying to build some late-season momentum, though. In fact, the Jayhawks are one of 14 teams that were ranked in the preseason poll but no longer reside in it. Many are still locks to make the NCAA field Sunday, but others are teetering on the bubble and a couple may need to win their league tournaments just to qualify. Unranked locks
Arizona dropped from the Top 25 this week after its loss at Allen Fieldhouse, but the No. 3 seed in the Big 12 tourney is still a good bet for a good seed on Selection Sunday. So is two-time reigning national champion UConn, which was ranked third in the preseason Top 25 but dropped out in early February and is seeded third in the Big East Tournament.
Other unranked locks include Creighton, the second seed in the Big East; Gonzaga, the No. 2 seed in the West Coast behind Saint Mary's; and Ole Miss, which was ranked as high as No. 16 this season and is seeded eighth in the SEC tourney. Best of the rest
Baylor was ranked eighth in the preseason Top 25 but fell out by mid-January, and going 4-6 over its final 10 games ahead of the Big 12 tourney — where it is seeded seventh — hardly helps. Still, the Bears of VJ Edgecomb and Co. took second-ranked Houston to the wire last weekend, and picking up a win in Kansas City this week should be enough.
Arkansas, which was preseason No. 16, enters the SEC tourney having won four of five, and a win or two as the No. 9 seed could be important. The same goes for preseason No. 17 Indiana, which is likewise seeded ninth in the Big Ten Tournament. Just keep winning
North Carolina is starting to resemble the preseason No. 9 in the country, but a slew of early losses — Stanford, Wake Forest, Pitt and Duke during one five-game stretch — has made life tough for the Tar Heels. They're seeded fifth in the ACC and could need at least two wins to make the NCAA field, and perhaps to save coach Hubert Davis' job.
Texas also could be playing for its coach, Rodney Terry, along with an NCAA berth. The Longhorns were preseason No. 19 but out by early January. They are are seeded 13th in the SEC and open with fellow bubble-dweller Vanderbilt on Wednesday. Win it all
Cincinnati was ranked 20th and Rutgers was 25th in the preseason Top 25, but both probably need to win their conference tournaments to make the NCAA field. The Bearcats are seeded 13th in the Big 12 and play Oklahoma State on Tuesday, while the Scarlet Knights are 11th in the Big Ten and open with USC on Wednesday.

Nissanka leads with 158 as Sri Lanka reaches 401-6 at lunch on Day 3 of 2nd test vs Bangladesh

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Opening batter Pathum Nissanka scored more than 150 runs in consecutive test matches as Sri Lanka strengthened its hold on the second cricket test, taking a 151-run first-innings lead at lunch on the third day. Bangladesh bowlers took four wickets in the first session to regain some control. Replying to Bangladesh's first-innings score of 247 all out, Sri Lanka reached 401 for six at the lunch break. Sri Lanka resumed on the third day at 290 for two with Nissanka unbeaten on 146 batting with night watchman Prabath Jayasuriya. Nissanka followed his 187 in the first test in Galle with a brilliant 158 which included 19 boundaries off 254 deliveries in an innings lasting more than six hours. A second new ball taken by Bangladesh after 80 overs on Friday produced quick results when Nissanka stepped out and played a defensive shot against left-arm spinner Taijul Islam which resulted in a straight-forward catch to Anamul Haque at short cover. Taijul returned to dismiss Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva (7) cheaply. His sliding delivery went straight and trapped de Silva lbw. Jayasuriya was out for 10 after occupying the crease for 39 balls in 75 minutes, making good of his role in shielding the regular batters overnight. Jayasuriya was caught at slip by Mehidy Hasan Miraz off fast bowler Nahid Rana. Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis shared a 49-run partnership in trying to stall a potential slide before offspin bowler Nayeem Hasan bowled Kamindu Mendis for 33. At the lunch break, Kusal Mendis was batting on 42 with rookie allrounder Sonal Dinusha on eight. Taijul was the pick of Bangladesh bowlers, taking three wickets for 114 runs while Hasan had two wickets. The first test in Galle ended in a draw. ___

Mizzou Men's Basketball Unveils Historic 2025-'26 Schedule

Mizzou Men's Basketball Unveils Historic 2025-'26 Schedule originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mizzou men's basketball released its non-conference schedule and Southeastern Conference opponents for the 2025-26 season on Wednesday, and for the first time in school history, 10 teams that made last season's NCAA Tournament will travel to Columbia to challenge the Tigers. Advertisement The Tigers open its season on the road for the second-straight season, this time heading to Washington D.C. to face Howard on Monday, Nov. 3. The date marks the earliest the Tigers have started their season in school history. Four days later, MU travels home to host Southeast Missouri State for the Tigers home opener on Friday, Nov. 7. SEMO marks the first of seven home games in a row for Mizzou. The Tigers notably host Minnesota on Wednesday, Nov. 12, a team MU narrowly defeated during its 2023-24 season where the Tigers went on to go winless in SEC play. Mizzou wraps up its homestretch against Cleveland State — the school where Mizzou head coach Dennis Gates coached for three seasons before joining the Tigers in 2022 — on Nov. 28, before going on the road for two projected Quad 1 games according to Bart Torvik's early projections as a proxy for NET rankings. First, MU heads to South Bend, Indianapolis, to face Notre Dame on Tuesday, Dec. 2, then the Tigers head to the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City to challenge Kansas in a neutral battle. The streak reached a season-high 10 games before the Tigers dropped a close one 80-77 against Illinois in St. Louis. Advertisement Mizzou and Illinois will continue its bragging rights tradition with another St. Louis showdown. The two teams will face off on Monday, Dec. 22, at Enterprise Center. The SEC also released opponents and locations for the conference portion of the season. Mizzou plays three schools both home and away in Arkansas, Mississippi State and Oklahoma – all teams that advanced to March Madness one year ago. Mizzou is set to face 19 of its 31 opponents next season who reached the NCAA Tournament in 2025. The Tigers have only once hosted more than seven tournament teams at home in a single season — when nine visited Hearnes Center during the 1988-89 campaign. The Tigers notably host the reigning champion Florida Gators, along with Tennessee and Auburn — all of which made deep playoff runs last season. Advertisement On the road, the Tigers toughest opponents are expected to be Kentucky and Alabama. With a non-conference slate full of NCAA Tournament contenders and a challenging SEC schedule ahead, it's a prime opportunity to bounce back — and prove they belong among the nation's best.
