FDI inflow into India grows 14% in 2024-25: Commerce Ministry
New Delhi [India], May 27 (ANI): FDI flows into India increased 14 per cent to USD 81.04 billion in the recently concluded financial year 2024-25, the Commerce Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.
Over the past decade, FDI inflows have seen a steady rise--from USD 36.05 billion in 2013-14 to USD 81.04 billion (provisional) in 2024-25.
The central government has put in place an investor-friendly Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy, under which most sectors are open for 100 per cent FDI through the automatic route, the commerce ministry boasted.
The FDI policy is reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure that India remains an attractive and competitive investment destination, the commerce ministry statement added.
Coming to 2024-25, the services sector emerged as the top recipient of FDI equity, attracting 19 per cent of total inflows, followed by computer software and hardware (16 per cent) and trading (8 per cent).
FDI in the services sector rose by 40.77 per cent to USD 9.35 billion from USD 6.64 billion in the previous year.
India is also becoming a hub for manufacturing FDI, which grew by 18 per cent in 2024-25, reaching USD 19.04 billion compared to USD 16.12 billion in 2023-24.
Maharashtra accounted for the highest share (39 per cent) of total FDI equity inflows in 2024-25, followed by Karnataka (13 per cent) and Delhi (12 per cent).
Among source countries, Singapore led with 30 per cent share, followed by Mauritius (17 per cent) and the United States (11 per cent).
Over the last eleven financial years (2014-25), India attracted FDI worth USD 748.78 billion, reflecting a 143 per cent increase over the previous eleven years (2003-14), which saw USD 308.38 billion in inflows.
This constitutes nearly 70 per cent of the total USD 1,072.36 billion in FDI received over the past 25 years.
Additionally, the number of source countries for FDI increased from 89 in 2013-14 to 112 in 2024-25, said the commerce ministry.
'In the regulatory domain, the Government has undertaken transformative reforms across multiple sectors to liberalize FDI norms. Between 2014 and 2019, significant reforms included increased FDI caps in Defence, Insurance, and Pension sectors, and liberalised policies for Construction, Civil Aviation, and Single Brand Retail Trading,' the statement noted.
From 2019 to 2024, notable measures included allowing 100 per cent FDI under the automatic route in coal mining, contract manufacturing, and insurance intermediaries.
In 2025, the Union Budget proposed increasing the FDI limit from 74 per cent to 100 per cent for companies investing their entire premium within India. (ANI)

Aviation industry accounts for 1.5 per cent of India's GDP, creates 7.7 million jobs
NEW DELHI: The Indian aviation industry, now the third-largest aviation market globally, contributes a significant USD 53.6 billion annually to the national economy, accounting for 1.5% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The sector is also a key employment generator, creating approximately 7.7 million jobs both directly and indirectly across the country. During the opening day of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual general meeting on Sunday, Amitabh Khosla, IATA's country Director for India, Nepal, and Bhutan, said the crucial role aviation plays in the nation's economic growth. He described the industry as a major driver of employment, economic activity, international trade, investment, and global connectivity. Khosla highlighted the correlation between a country's air connectivity and competitiveness, productivity, investment levels, tourism, and trade flow. 'In 2023, the industry annually generated a USD 53.6 billion contribution to India's economy, underpinning 7.7 million jobs in the country,' he said. Tourism, supported by aviation, contributes Rs 27.1 billion to the GDP and employs 5 million people. International tourists add another USD 29.4 billion annually to the economy through local purchases of goods and services. 'Overall the travel and tourism sector accounts for 6.5% of the nation's GDP and 8.9% of total employment in 2023,' Khosla stated. Khosla also pointed out that India has shown a strong recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. While the domestic aviation market rebounded more quickly, the international segment has now surpassed pre-pandemic levels. As of December 2024, the international sector stood nearly 20% above its 2019 levels, while domestic operations were over 8% higher. 'Such a positive recovery reaffirms the strong demand for international travel and provides a firm foundation for the period ahead,' he said. The Middle East remained the top international destination for Indian flyers in 2023, with 13.7 million passengers, followed by the Asia Pacific region and Europe. To meet growing demand, airlines have ramped up flight frequencies and seat capacities. Scheduled flights increased by 77.7%, reaching about 1.3 million in 2024. Most of these were domestic, which surged from 613,000 flights in 2014 to nearly 1.1 million in 2024. Indigo led this expansion, operating 53% of all departing flights from and within India. Consumers have also benefited from increased competition, which led to a 25% reduction in real airfares in 2023 compared to 2011, Khosla noted. Currently, India has 116 airports offering commercial scheduled services, with 96 of them providing direct connections and 521 outbound international flights each day. Over the last five years, 103 new international routes have been introduced. There are currently 99 operational airlines in the country. India has also established itself as the sixth-largest air cargo market in the world, transporting 3.3 million tonnes of air freight in 2023. Khosla added that the country holds significant potential for the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

"Enthusiasm in Europe to enter into Free Trade Agreement with India": Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal
Paris [France], June 1 (ANI): Highlighting growing global confidence in India's economic prospects, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Sunday said there is strong enthusiasm in Europe to enter into a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India. Speaking to ANI during his ongoing visit to Paris, France, Goyal noted that India's rising reputation has made nations increasingly eager to deepen trade and diplomatic ties. He also noted the positive momentum following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in New Delhi earlier this year. 'There is no time limit for these discussions, but the European Union President, Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Modi had a meeting in New Delhi in February. It was decided that we should conclude a good Free Trade Agreement by the end of this year. Considering the relations that I have built with my counterpart, the European Union Trade Commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, I feel that we will progress very fast and take it forward soon. There is enthusiasm in Europe to enter into a Free Trade Agreement with India, and from the feedback we get from the industry in India, it seems India will also benefit from this,' Goyal said, adding that when both will benefit, it is natural that it is our responsibility to do it quickly. Earlier, while speaking to the media in Paris, Goyal also expressed gratitude towards France for its support following the terror attack in Pahalgam. 'India is very grateful to France for the strong support and solidarity expressed when there was a terror strike at Pahalgam. The French people and government also stand for zero tolerance against terrorism, just like India,' he said. He emphasised the strong personal rapport between PM Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, which he said had given 'fresh momentum' to the robust Indo-French relationship. France expresses strong support for India against terrorism, trade ties deepen: Piyush Goyal

Goyal is on his three-day official visit to Paris as part of his ongoing visit to France and Italy from 1-5 June 2025. Goyal highlighted the strong understanding between India and France on counter-terrorism efforts. 'The French people and government also stand for zero tolerance against terrorism, just like India,' he stated. 'The French Senate delegation that visited India fully supported India's stand and gave us confidence that the world stands with India when we are fighting against terrorism in all forms, whether state-sponsored or non-state actors,' Goyal said. The April 22 attack, carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, is one of the deadliest in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama strike in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed. The minister drew parallels between both countries' experiences with terrorism, referencing the devastating 2015 Paris attacks that killed approximately 125 people just days before the COP21 climate summit. 'Acts of terrorism in France have caused a lot of damage,' Goyal noted. 'The people and the government of France can understand India's anger. They could connect with the displeasure the people of India felt,' Goyal said. The visit underscores the deepening ties between India and France, built on the strong personal relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Macron share a very deep personal connect and rapport and have had frequent interactions, giving afresh momentum to the strong French-India ties,' Goyal emphasised. This momentum was recently demonstrated in February 2025 when India and France co-hosted the AI Action Summit, which Goyal described as 'a strong endorsement of our shared objective to further the ethical use of artificial intelligence and promote good regulations.' During his Paris visit, Goyal is scheduled to meet with CEOs of several French companies to encourage investment in India, leveraging the country's market of 1.4 billion people and its skilled workforce. The minister will also hold bilateral meetings with his French counterparts and trade ministers from around the world. A key focus of the discussions will be advancing the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, with France being one of its strongest supporters.
