Mar Thoma Church Oman concludes golden jubilee celebrations with grand valedictory function
Muscat – The Golden Jubilee Valedictory Function of the Mar Thoma Church Oman Parish was held at St. Thomas Church, Ruwi, on Saturday, marking the culmination of a year-long celebration.
The event commenced with a tribute to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, followed by the national anthems of Oman and India. The function was inaugurated by H.G. Most Rev. Dr. Theodosious Mar Thoma Metropolitan and presided over by Rt. Rev. Dr. Euyakim Mar Coorilos, Diocesan Bishop.
Among the distinguished guests were H.E. Mr. Pankaj Khimji, Advisor for Foreign Trade and International Cooperation, Oman, and Shri P. Prasad, Minister of Agriculture, Kerala, India. Other notable attendees included Second Secretary of the Indian Embassy Mr. Anoop Bijily, Oman Cancer Association Chairperson Dr. Wahid Ali Said Al Kharusi, PCO Lead Pastor Mitchel Ford, Rev. Sajan Varghese, and Rev. Obed Samuel.
Mr. Binu M. Philip, General Convener, presented the Jubilee Report, expressing gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq and the Government of Oman for providing the Parish with freedom of worship over the past five decades. A tribute was also paid to Late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said for his past support.
As part of its mission and service, the Parish supported the Oman Cancer Association and established a Pain & Palliative Care Unit in Kerala. Additionally, proceeds from the Annual Get-Together were distributed to those in need for medical, educational, and housing expenses.
The year-long Golden Jubilee Celebrations featured home visits to Parish members, an ecumenical musical program, a women empowerment session by Ex-DGP Kerala Sreelekha IPS, a Parish Convention, Family Day, Christmas Carols, and devotional performances by playback singer KG Markose.
During the event, seven longstanding Parish members who completed 50 years of membership were honored. Seven dignitaries, including medical professionals and successful businessmen, were also recognized for their contributions. Additionally, 10 subcommittee conveners were appreciated for their dedicated service.
The function witnessed large participation from Parish members, representatives from other churches, and members of diverse communities, reinforcing the church's legacy of faith, service, and unity

UK and India discuss cooperation amidst Lammy's visit
NEW DELHI: Britain and India on Saturday discussed expanding their "counter-terrorism" collaboration following recent fighting between India and Pakistan, Britain's foreign minister said after meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. British foreign minister David Lammy is the highest-profile Western official to have visited both New Delhi and Islamabad since the South Asian neighbours agreed to a ceasefire last month after their worst fighting in nearly three decades. The latest tensions began in April after the killing of 26 men in Indian Kashmir that New Delhi blamed on "terrorists" backed by Pakistan, a charge Islamabad denied. India then attacked what it called "terrorist infrastructure" in Pakistan, leading to escalation from both sides until a May 10 ceasefire. "We want the situation to be maintained, but of course we recognise fragility, particularly in the backdrop of terrorism, terrorism designed to destabilise India," Lammy said in an interview at the residence of the British High Commissioner in New Delhi. "We are keen to continue to work with our Indian partners on counter-terrorism measures." He said he discussed the next steps with both Modi and Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, but gave no specifics. Last year, India and Britain discussed combating the financing of terrorism, cooperation between law enforcement and judicial bodies; and information sharing. Lammy said he also discussed boosting trade between the world's fifth and sixth largest economies. The countries concluded talks for a free trade deal early last month. "I know that Prime Minister Keir Starmer is very much looking forward to coming to India very soon to sign the free trade agreement," Lammy said. "There is so much that our two nations can continue to do together." Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney invited his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to the upcoming Group of Seven summit in a phone call, as the two sides look to mend ties after relations soured in the past two years. India is not a G7 member but can be invited as a guest to its annual gathering, which will be held this year in Kananaskis in the Canadian province of Alberta, from June 15 to 17. Modi also stated in his post on Friday that India and Canada would work together "with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests." Canada expelled several top Indian diplomats and consular officials in October 2024 after linking them to the murder and alleged a broader effort to target Indian dissidents in Canada. New Delhi has denied the allegations and expelled the same number of Canadian diplomats in response. India is Canada's 10th largest trading partner and Canada is the biggest exporter of pulses, including lentils, to India. Carney, who is trying to diversify trade away from the United States, said it made sense for the G7 to invite India, since it had the fifth-largest economy in the world and was at the heart of a number of supply chains. HM offers Eid prayers in Nizwa
The Sultanate of Oman celebrated the first day of Eid Al Adha on Friday. Meanwhile, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik offered the prayers of Eid Al Adha for the year 1446 AH at the Sultan Qaboos Mosque in the Wilayat of Nizwa in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. Dr Mohammed bin Said al Maamari, Minister of Awqaf and Religious Affairs, led the worshippers and delivered the Eid sermon, thanking the Almighty Allah for the blessings of peace and praying for the soul of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The sermon underscored that Haj is a purification of the heart and that a nation is built upon covenant and empowerment. It affirmed that security is the cornerstone of development and that true prosperity begins with intention before construction and with purpose before cultivation. Loyalty to the land, it declared, lies not in its material wealth but in its people — those who inhabit it with devotion and faith. Life, it reminded, is not granted to those who merely wait, but to those who strive. The land's blessings flourish when sincere intention stirs in a heart that first believes, then acts. The sermon further emphasised that nations rise when a leader guides with unwavering integrity, followed by generations who uphold his vision, echo his prayers, affirm their allegiance and perform the rites of gratitude. It also addressed the divine prohibition against contentious debate, warning that it sows hatred and discord. Rising above such disputes, it asserted, is a mark of wisdom in nation-building and a revival of timeless principles. Just as 'there is no argument in Haj,' there should be no dispute over a nation's foundational truths. Every idea has its moment and every critique its boundaries. Reason must temper words before they are spoken; and dignity and sanctity must be upheld. Further, the sermon reaffirmed that loyalty to the homeland is everlasting, its progress unceasing. In the hearts of its people lies an unbreakable covenant — one that binds them together, protects what has been built with wisdom and resolve; and guides their steps forward with clarity and sincerity. Together, they engage in dialogue with wisdom, offer critique with responsibility and advance with confidence. After performing the Eid prayers, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik accepted greetings from well-wishers and exchanged cordial sentiments with them. As His Majesty the Sultan left the Mosque, the artillery fired twenty-one rounds in salutation of the Supreme Commander. After that, the Royal motorcade of His Majesty the Sultan left. The prayers were performed alongside His Majesty the Sultan by some of their highnesses members of the Royal Family, Al Busaid dignitaries, ministers, advisors, commanders of the Sultan's Armed Forces (SAF), the Royal Oman Police (ROP) and other military and security services, some members of the State Council and Majlis Ash'Shura in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, under-secretaries, walis, shaikhs and citizens. — ONA 3035241
