Dhul-Hijjah Moon Sighting Committee to convene tomorrow at SZGM

The meeting will be chaired by scholar Shaykh Abdullah bin Al Shaykh Al-Mahfouz bin Bayyah, Chairman of the UAE Council for Fatwa. He will be joined by Dr Omar Habtoor Al-Darei, Vice Chairman of the Council, and members who are specialists in Islamic jurisprudence, legal studies, and astronomy.
Review of astronomical data and moon sighting feasibility
The committee will examine scientific data and detailed reports from specialised agencies regarding astronomical calculations, including the timing of the moon's birth, conjunction, and sighting feasibility. These analyses will draw from observations made by national observatories using the latest advanced technologies and instruments after sunset on Tuesday.
Public encouraged to participate in moon sighting
The UAE Council for Fatwa has invited experts, traditional moon-sighters, and the public—both citizens and residents—to participate in observing the crescent of Dhul-Hijjah 1446 AH after sunset on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Lebanon PM visits Sheikh Zayed Mosque
Nawaf Salam, Prime Minister of Lebanon, visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (SZGM) in Abu Dhabi. He was accompanied by Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President; Dr. Ghassan Salamé, Minister of Culture of Lebanon; Fouad Chehab Dandan, Ambassador of Lebanon to the UAE, and his accompanying delegation. The Prime Minister of Lebanon, accompanied by Dr. Yousef Al-Obaidli, Director-General of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, began his tour by visiting the tomb of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who promoted tolerance, coexistence and peace throughout the world, followed by the mosque's halls and sections, where he was briefed by cultural specialists about its mission to spread the values of coexistence, tolerance and acceptance, as promoted by the Founding Father. Sharjah Astronomical Observatory observes Dhul Hijjah crescent
Crescent moon sighting process Amar Issa confirmed that the observatory commenced its crescent moon sighting activities after sunset on Tuesday, the 29th of Dhul-Qi'dah, as part of its second meeting for this year. In an exclusive statement to "Sharjah 24," Amar explained that the observation utilises a range of advanced astronomical devices, primarily the high-precision refracting telescope, along with CCD sensors and automated tracking systems that allow for precise recording of astronomical images and data. Compliance with established standards The Director of the Astronomical Observatories indicated that the observatory team operates according to the approved standards for crescent moon sighting in the UAE. This includes calculating the crescent's thickness after sunset, its angular elongation, and its age since conjunction, in addition to assessing atmospheric clarity and background sky illumination. These parameters are continuously monitored using specialised astronomical software to ensure accurate results. Submission of results Amar added that all images and measurements are immediately submitted to the Crescent Moon Sighting Committee of the UAE Fatwa Council. The committee studies the field reports and astronomical calculations before announcing the visibility of the crescent, paving the way for the official decision regarding the first day of Dhul-Hijjah.
