Empowering Women Key To Driving ASEAN's Sheconomy
KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- A whole-of-society approach is needed to empower women across all sectors, including governance, urban planning and the digital economy to unlock the full potential of the 'sheconomy' and drive inclusive, sustainable development in ASEAN, said Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
She said women must not only be included in decision-making spaces but also be recognised as key architects of change especially in city-level transformation where daily life is most affected.
'The 'sheconomy' is not a parallel economy. It is a reimagining of our whole economy, powered by inclusion and inclusion is not charity; it is good policy,' she said.
She said during the plenary session titled 'ASEAN Women Leading Social Change: Integrating Social Goals with Economic Growth in the 'Sheconomy', at the Women Economic Forum (WEF) ASEAN 2025 here today.
Maimunah who is also a former executive director of UN-Habitat, stressed the importance of embedding gender equity into the fabric of urban governance, budgeting and service delivery.
She noted that this aligns with the ASEAN Gender Mainstreaming Strategic Framework 2021-2025 and Kuala Lumpur is localising the framework to the governance tool by ensuring housing, transport and public health policies serve women.
Maimunah also shared initiatives by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) through the Safe City Programme which includes the installation of 10,000 CCTVs and improved street lighting.
'These efforts are not just about safety, but about dignity and inclusion. We are creating safer zones, better transit and walkable neighbourhoods centred on women's mobility. In 2024, crime dropped by 15 per cent in the upgraded areas and women reported feeling safer,' she said.
Despite progress, she pointed only 10 per cent of local councils in Malaysia are led by women, calling the need to localise gender mainstreaming efforts at all levels of government.

The ECCC Legacy Institution aims to prevent the recurrence of the genocidal regime and support public education. - AFP PHNOM PENH: The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has shared a concept note on the establishment of the ECCC Legacy Institution, which aims to prevent the recurrence of the genocidal regime and support public education. This dissemination took place on June 19, and was chaired by Vongsey Vissoth, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister, Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers and chairman of the Working Group for Cooperation with the UN and Development Partners for the Implementation of the ECCC's Residual Functions. The meeting was attended by officials from relevant ministries, Joseph Scheuer, UN coordinator in Cambodia, representatives from 18 embassies, and representatives from numerous domestic and international organisations. He added that the institution will have the mission of managing and preserving archives related to the ECCC, as well as promoting training and research on the ECCC's achievements, valuable experiences and jurisprudence. In addition, it will educate future generations of Cambodian youth and the general public to prevent atrocities and genocide in Cambodia. It will also foster partnerships with national and international institutions to enhance education, peacebuilding, the prevention of genocidal crimes and transitional justice. 'The meeting participants fully supported the establishment of this Legacy Institution and pledged their support to make it a significant hub for information and research through education, dissemination and in-depth national and international research to promote justice within peace, and to prevent crimes and atrocities in the future, with the goal of maintaining long-term peace in Cambodia, the region and the world,' said an ECCC statement. Vissoth expressed gratitude for the support of the UN and the international community for the ECCC's operations. He called on relevant parties, the international community, development partners, private sector leaders and international organisations to participate in this initiative and support Cambodia's new institution. No more imported food at official events, Anwar tells civil service

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has directed all government departments to cease using imported goods, particularly food, at official events, in a bid to promote local products. Speaking at the finance ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar said that using local produce would not only bolster the local economy but would also open wider opportunities for local farmers to market their goods. Advertisement 'If every government department follows this directive, it will create more opportunities for our farmers to supply local food ingredients,' he said. The prime minister also cited the example of neighbouring countries whom he said were committed to using local food products at all official functions. 'In Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand, I've never been served imported food at any government-hosted official event. It's automatic for them to ensure that only local food is served,' he said. Anwar also criticised the preference by some parties for imported food products despite the government's clear stance.
