'Lord of the Rings' star to introduce all-trans, non-binary rendition of Shakespeare play
Sir Ian McKellen will be introducing a UK performance of William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" featuring a cast entirely of transgender and non-binary performers this summer.
The Trans What You Will theater group will soon be globally livestreaming their performance of a rehearsed reading of Shakespeare comedy "Twelfth Night" at The Space theater in London on July 25.
The cast, as announced in their casting call, will consist of "12 – 14 trans and non-binary performers," noting, "We are particularly interested in hearing from those who are multiply marginalized as we want a wide representation of the trans community."
The theater group announced on its official Instagram page that "iconic actor and LGBTQ+ activist, Sir Ian McKellen, will be introducing our show!"
The post featured a statement from the famous film actor, declaring, "'Twelfth Night' is perhaps the funniest and most moving of Shakespeare's plays. This is achieved through the complexity of gender and sexuality from first to last. I'm really looking forward to the impact of this latest version of the play at The Space. I hope to see you there!"
"Twelfth Night already toys with gender and performance – it feels like Shakespeare wrote it for us. This reading is about joy, solidarity and showing what's possible when trans and nonbinary artists are at the center of the story," director Phoebe Kemp told Attitude magazine.
A representative for the Trans What You Will theater company offered a similar statement, declaring, "With mistaken identities, cross-dressing, and declarations of love across shifting gender roles, Twelfth Night has long explored the complexity of identity. This production makes that queerness explicit, reclaiming the story through the lived experiences of trans and nonbinary artists."
According to its crowdfunding campaign, profits will be sent to trans charity Not a Phase.
Not A Phase describes itself on its website as a "trans-led, nationwide charity committed to uplifting and improving the lives of trans+ adults, through awareness campaigning, social projects and funding trans+ lead initiatives."

Recently, he provided an assist for England's U17 side in a crucial game against Italy at the U17 Euros and he scored twice and registered an assist against Northern Ireland in the final qualifying game in the lead-up to the tournament. Chelsea thought Ngumoha was good enough to play with the first team at 15-years-old. That's when he was first invited to participate in first team training sessions. He'll be 17-years-old by the start of the 2025/26 season and it already feels like he's ready to make the step-up. Sometimes you have to throw players in at the deep end, especially players as exciting as Ngumoha. If Diaz leaves, it will be a huge opportunity for the young man and Liverpool will absolutely consider Ngumoha as an option to fill the Colombian's void.

Bar fears noise complaints from planned flats
A music venue which hosts heavy metal gigs and punk bands has said it feared becoming embroiled in a noise row with residents of a new city centre tower block. The owners of Rebellion on Whitworth Street West in Manchester said they "cannot afford to fight" a legal battle if there were complaints. The application, from property firm Glenbrook, to build a £118m 44-storey development next to the bar has been approved by Manchester City Council. The local authority said it was aware of "sensitivities relating to the proximity of Rebellion to this development, and the potential noise nuisance which could be created in the future" and work was ongoing to ensure a solution. The venue's co-owner Alex Kostyakov said an appropriate acoustic assessment had not been completed and he had not been consulted by developers. "They did [the assessment] on a Friday and Saturday night and didn't event mention that we're an all-week venue in the planning submission," he said. "We have heavy metal gigs on Monday nights, people moving in aren't going to be expecting that," the 31-year-old from Swinton said. "If you've got a Sunday off and you're trying to relax in your flat and we've got a loud punk bank playing it's not going to work. "It's about quality of life for the resident not just us." Manchester City Council said a clause in the planning agreement would ensure that work would only begin when it was "satisfied that it can take place without any noise nuisance being detected in future properties". However, Mr Kostyakov, who has co-owned the venue since 2021, said there was no way to know if there would be noise issues until residents had moved in. "The worry is that residents move in and the council turns round and says we have to pay for £50,000 worth of soundproofing," he said. "Or if they say we have to be ending gigs at 10, for example, we will lose a big chunk of our income. "That would basically be the end of us, we'd have to shut." He said he was concerned the venue could end up in the same situation as Northern Quarter venue Night and Day Cafe, which was subject to a three-year legal battle with the council over noise complaints in 2021. "Our pockets are nowhere near as deep as Night and Day," he said. "We both have other jobs because running a music venue isn't enough." Mr Kostyakov is calling for an amendment to the planning permission requiring the developer to take responsibility for "any remediation and acoustic works" in future. The BBC has contacted Glenbrook for a comment. The Whitworth Street West development had been approved last month but the application had to be reassessed after the Music Venue True (MVT) submitted an objection on the basis of its proximity to Rebellion. The MVT said: "Rebellion is not only well-loved locally and nationally, it is an irreplaceable part of Manchester's live music infrastructure." It said the risk was "not hypothetical" as there were "obvious correlations between noise complaints and venues closing". "Responsible planning should create places where people want to live because of the cultural life on their doorstep, not in spite of it," it added. Everton fans have voted for the 'fan-named pub' inside the Hill Dickinson Stadium to be named 'The Prince Rupert' following an online poll. Six thousand supporters cast their vote to name the pub, with the winner beating The Southall Arms 28% to 24%. Advertisement The Prince Rupert will now join four other bars in the West Stand of Everton's state-of-the-art new stadium, The Queen's Head, inspired by the pub where Everton Football Club was founded, Dixie's Sports Bar, a venue showcasing live sport from around the world and Kendall's Social, a space designed for music, entertainment and socialising before and after matches. The four bars will be in a special area named 'Village Street' where, in November 1879, St Domingo's became Everton FC. Those supporters in the Village Street area of the stadium will have halfway-line seating, as well as the cost of food and drink covered in their membership.
