Air Liquide partners with Manildra Group to build Australia's largest biogenic CO₂ plant, strengthening national supply
MELBOURNE, Australia, May 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Air Liquide has entered into an agreement with Manildra Group to build a new food and beverage grade carbon dioxide (CO₂) plant in Bomaderry, New South Wales. This facility will capture and purify the biogenic CO₂ produced naturally by Shoalhaven Starches from fermentation of wheat, and supply the purified CO₂ product to Australian industries.
Air Liquide will build, own and operate a new CO₂ plant with a production capacity of over 90,000 tonnes per year of food and beverage grade CO₂, which would make it the largest food and beverage quality CO₂ plant in Australia. Construction of the new Air Liquide facility is planned to commence in the second half of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals, and it is anticipated to be operational in 2027.
The biogenic CO₂ produced naturally from fermentation of wheat at Manildra Group's Shoalhaven Starches site provides a biogenic CO₂ product offering to meet the growing needs of the food and beverage industry and other applications.
High quality food and beverage grade CO₂ serves the needs of Australian businesses in a broad range of industries where quality and reliability of supply are a necessity. This includes food, beverages, water treatment, desalination, hospitality, manufacturing and medical industries.
Tim Kehoe, Managing Director of Air Liquide Pacific said: "To address the critical need for increased supply and improved reliability in domestic CO₂, Air Liquide has partnered with Manildra to provide a biogenic CO2 solution. Air Liquide's new CO₂ plant will boost local CO₂ supply and demonstrates our commitment to supporting the growth needs of Australian industries well into the future."
John Honan, Managing Director of Manildra Group said: "Through our partnership with Air Liquide, we're delivering 100% Australian, food-grade CO₂ for essential local industries – part of our broader commitment to closing the loop in our advanced manufacturing process. BP Marsh offloads Sterling to Australia's ATC Insurance
BP Marsh, the UK-based specialist investor, has divested its approximately 20% stake in Sterling Insurance to ATC Insurance Solutions, an Australian underwriting agency in which BP Marsh already has a 25% holding. The transaction saw ATC acquire 100% of Sterling's issued share capital for a total consideration of A$33.2m, through a combination of cash and equity. BP Marsh's portion of the deal, corresponding to its 20% interest in Sterling, will be settled via equity in ATC valued at around A$6.5m. This increases BP Marsh's stake in ATC from 25% to 27%. BP Marsh initially invested approximately £1.9m in Sterling in 2013. The investment generated an internal rate of return of 8.8% over a 12-year period. The firm expects further value growth through its increased holding in ATC. As part of the transaction, Dan Topping has stepped down from his position as nominee director on Sterling's board, while retaining his board role at ATC. BP Marsh stated that the transaction is aimed at facilitating a combination of its two investee companies, allowing Sterling's senior management to roll equity into ATC and providing liquidity to long-term shareholders of Sterling. ATC chairman and managing director Chris Anderson stated: "Sterling is highly respected within its sector, with a strong focus on niche, hard-to-place and complex risks. We are thrilled to welcome Sterling to the ATC family and look forward to working closely with their team as we continue to grow together." Sterling Chairman Tony Parington said: "We are excited to be joining forces with ATC and look forward to contributing to the success of the combined business. "Our partnership with BP Marsh since 2013 has been productive, and we are pleased that this relationship will continue as part of ATC." Syfe secures $80m in Series C funding for Asia-Pacific expansion
Syfe, a digital wealth platform based in Singapore, has announced the completion of its Series C funding round, raising $80m. This includes a new all-equity C2 tranche of $53m at a significantly increased valuation, adding to the earlier C1 raise of $27m in August 2024. Syfe stated that the funding indicates its growing investor confidence in its mission to redefine wealth management across Asia-Pacific. The latest round brings Syfe's total funding to date to $132m and follows its strategic acquisition of Selfwealth, an online investment platform in Australia. This acquisition significantly increased Syfe's presence and user base in the Australian market. The Series C round was led by two UK family offices, with returning investors Unbound and Valar also participating. Syfe founder and CEO Dhruv Arora said: 'This fund raise comes at an exciting time as we grow our presence across the region and expand our offerings. 'In Singapore, Hong Kong, and Australia, nearly half of all adults are in the 'mass affluent' segment, and this segment is growing fast. We're in a great position to serve them with personalised, accessible, and high-quality wealth management at scale.' Syfe has grown significantly over the last 18 months, with total assets now exceeding $10bn. In Hong Kong alone, the business has doubled in size since early 2025. Syfe is prioritising automation and AI-assisted tools to enhance efficiency for clients and internal operations. The company is also making strategic hires to strengthen key capabilities. Recent notable additions include Sanjeev Malik, former managing director at BlackRock, and Dane Ricketts, Syfe's new VP of marketing, who brings extensive experience from Procter & Gamble and Grab. 'Syfe's core business has nearly doubled in the last year, and now expands further with the addition of Selfwealth to the Syfe family,' added Arora. 'This capital will be used to scale our reach and strengthen our leadership position across Singapore, Hong Kong, and Australia. We'll continue investing in innovation, enhancing the customer experience, and expanding our product suite to meet the evolving needs of investors.'
