Don't let a vocal minority silence Britain's ancient church bells
There used to be a tradition that ringing church bells would drive out evil spirits. Now it's the bells that are being driven out. The latest set of chimes to fall foul of complainers are in Mytholmroyd.
It's a small West Yorkshire village, best known as the birthplace of Ted Hughes. Perhaps it was the bells of St Michael's Church that inspired the late Poet Laureate to write in one of his rhymes for children about a bell's 'clang of mumbling boom'. But that clang was far from mumbling for three residents who said they were being kept awake all night by the chimes, ringing every 15 minutes. A noise abatement order imposed on the bells means they now can't be rung at all, so for the first time in 100 years they have fallen silent.
There have been similar ding dongs over church bells elsewhere in the past few years: in both Witheridge and Kenton in Devon, in Helpringham in Lincolnshire, and in Beith in Ayrshire, usually by people saying that chimes through the night in these rural neighbourhoods are ruining their sleep.
As someone who lives in a city, used to police helicopters overhead, ice cream vans blaring their tinny tunes, trains rattling past, and crowds of students staggering home at night under the influence of numerous intoxicants, I have to say I do find the noise of the countryside rather disturbing.
Here in the city, these noises are part of a constant soundscape. In the country, there is an enveloping silence, but then you will be jolted into wakefulness by a cockerel's piercing crow, or a huge piece of farm machinery rattling past, or a herd of cattle lowing their way to milking.
But a church bell chime, surely, is in a minor key compared to these other rural interruptions?
For me the sound of bells is, well, music to my ears. Despite the planes flying into Heathrow over my head and the police sirens blaring outside my door, I can still hear the sound of a bell nearby, which rings regularly to mark Divine Office being said in a local monastery as well as the Angelus at noon.
On Sundays, a peal of bells sounds out at a nearby church, and on weekday evenings too you can hear the ringing, as the tower captain and his team practise Plain Bob Major or Grandsire Triples or one of those other extraordinary mathematical formulas, known as changes, that make up bell-ringing.
But the kind of change we don't want is something so quintessentially English as bell-ringing to disappear because after a few people make a fuss, officialdom steps in.
The bells of Mytholmroyd were silenced when just three people objected – but the 1,200 residents who wanted the chimes to continue had their petition ignored. It's a growing pattern: a few complaints put an end to chimes that had been loved by communities for generations. Yet there's more at stake here than bells. It sounds a death-knell for our tradition of going with what the majority want.

Royal Knights prepared to face the future
Jun. 12—ROYAL CITY — The Royal High School Class of 2025 can face anything together, Class President Aaliyah Guerrero told them at graduation Friday. "It seems like just yesterday we were all playing during recess," she said. "Some of us were on the monkey bars, others played on the big tires, and then we had the ankle-biters who spent their recess on the red dots. I might have been one of those ankle-biters. But during it all ... we learned to be more than just friends. We learned how to be present when it matters. Each of us faced battles that no one else fought. But here we are, not because we conquered classes, but because we showed up." The graduation ceremonies at Royal High School began with a senior parade. Students, friends and family gathered in the high school parking lot and, accompanied by fire and police sirens, took one last loop through town in vehicles festooned with banners, flags and streamers. Then the students assembled on the football field as their families watched from the stands. Many of the 112 students who graduated Friday were the first in their families to finish school, and more are the first to pursue post-secondary education. Principal Courtney McCoy began the commencement ceremony by asking those students to stand and be recognized. Besides Guerrero, class Treasurer Jade Flores Ayala addressed her peers. "We won't always know what's coming next," she said. "But if high school has taught us anything, it's that we can overcome any challenges and accomplish great things. So, let's carry this spirit with us. Follow your dreams, keep learning, because the world needs our voice, our creativity and our courage." Student speaker David De La Rosa Jr. thanked the teachers and parents who had guided the class along. "You cheered us on, kept us going and believed in us when we didn't always believe in ourselves," he said. "Your love, patience and support gave us the foundation we needed to grow." The guest speaker, chosen by the students, was English and Language Arts teacher Ausencio Delgado. "Look at this crowd of caps and gowns, grinning like you just pulled off the ultimate senior prank," Delgado said. "Four years ago, you walked in nervous, maybe a little scared, but definitely excited. Now here you are, terrified, anxious and ready for a new adventure ... Courage isn't the absence of fear. It's wrestling fear to the ground. It's launching yourself into the air, trusting you'll land on your feet. It's showing up even when you might stumble. Go forth and make your mark, Royal Knights," Delgado concluded. "We believe in you. I believe in you."

'Diverse personalities' and 'interesting times' discussed at Wilson Creek graduation
Jun. 12—WILSON CREEK — The Wilson Creek High School Class of 2025 is going places. "Every one of you has made this bold and admirable decision to pursue higher education," Dean of Students Anna Thomas told the nine graduating seniors May 31. "You've all chosen to invest in yourselves, to take the next step, to challenge your mind, to grow into the people you're meant to be. What I find especially remarkable is how you've done it together. You've grown up, side-by-side in a small school, knowing each other in ways that no one else ever will, and now you're about to scatter across the state and the country, each heading off to something new." The Class of 2025 has received a total of more than $82,000 in scholarships, according to Thomas. The traditions surrounding Wilson Creek's graduation are a little different from other schools. The gym is split in half and still doesn't fill up, so students can have as many family and friends in attendance as they like. The other half of the gym is set up with tables laden with photos, awards and memorabilia from each student's 12 years of school. The students do their own decorations and choose their own speakers. "This class in particular has been together for the majority since kindergarten," Thomas said. "They're very connected." The salutatorian was Allie Newman, and the valedictorian was Madison Finkbeiner. Finkbeiner spoke about the dynamics of growing up in a small community. "We all come from similar backgrounds, yet have diverse personalities, which has led to some interesting times," she said. "That's what makes our class special. None of us are afraid to show who we are. My hope is that that never changes." English and history teacher Nick Weitzel was the students' chosen guest speaker. The students had come a long way since he first encountered them, he said. "I remember when I first got this class, they were a very rambunctious group of students," he said. "Several students in this class I called 'squirrels' ... because they could not sit down for five minutes to work without constant reminders from me and more than a few write-ups and more than a few people sent to the office ... What I see before me is not a bunch of young, rambunctious and unfocused students; they're an amazing group of young adults that all have high hopes and dreams for their future, as they should." Before she read off the list of students and the scholarships and awards they had earned, Thomas added a few final words. "Don't let anyone tell you that education doesn't matter," she said. "It does because education isn't just about a degree. It's about how you think, how you lead, how you contribute to the world. It shapes who you become. And so, as you go, whether it's to community college, university, trade school or beyond, know this: we are so proud of you. We believe in you, and no matter how far you go, you'll always have a home here in Wilson Creek."

Editorial: The people of Central Florida stand as the real tribute to Pulse
The story of what happened in the early morning hours of June 12, 2016, began with gunshots, pain and terror. Forty-nine lives lost, dozens more injured in bodies and souls. The violence unleashed by a single gunman at Pulse nightclub left scars on this community that will never disappear. And at long last, local leaders have a plan for a fitting memorial to that tragedy. But that is not the end of this story, and that memorial will not be the most important way the Orlando area honors the legacy of Pulse. Even before the sun set on that fateful day, Central Floridians were building their own monuments, written in flowers, candles, prayers and tears. In public spaces across the region, people gathered, strangers coming together to reassure each other that this ugly act did not represent what this community stood for. And before the eyes of the world, that steadfast insistence made a difference. Orlando rebutted any suggestion that it provided a haven for hatred — by responding to ugly violence with love, kindness and solidarity. That response was anchored in common but often unspoken knowledge. Even before the Pulse massacre, Orlando was known as a place where members of the LGBTQ community could live in relative peace, even though homosexuality was a crime in Florida until 2003, and same-sex marriage was only legalized in 2015. It was also recognized as a haven for people from all over the world — not just tourists, but those who came to this country looking for a new start, even if they didn't speak perfect English. Clubs like Pulse provided safe spaces for people regardless of sexuality, national origin or skin color to come together in safety, to dance, to celebrate their common humanity instead of focusing on their differences. But many of Orlando's neighborhoods, businesses and houses of worship also worked to ensure that all were welcome. That made Central Florida unusual, particularly in the South. But what happened after Pulse made it extraordinary. Even as the shock of the massacre reverberated, there was little tolerance for intolerance. We're certain that there were people who attempted to preach the massacre as the wages of this area's acceptance of alternative sexualities, or who attempted to use the Islamic ideology of the killer (who also died that night) as a wedge for anti-Muslim hatred. But those voices were barely heard — even when they came from presidential campaigns. Instead, the Orlando LGBTQ community quickly forged an alliance with local Muslim leaders and Latino organizations, standing together against the kind of persecution that each community had far too much experience with. This is the legacy of Pulse, and one that we need today more than ever. Over recent years, Americans have seen their state and national leaders attempt to exploit ugly prejudice for political gain. In Florida, elected leaders tried to parlay angst about drag queen story hours and overly 'woke' teachers to distract attention from their attempts to weaken the strength of public schools and erase history lessons that underscore the toll that hatred extracts from today's society. More recently, unfounded antagonism against immigrants is being used to sow fear across many Orlando-area communities. The goal seems obvious: Every attempt to divide our communities makes us more vulnerable, more easily manipulated, more vulnerable to acts of political aggression that can easily flower into actual violence. That reality also hit hard locally in the aftermath of the January 6, 2021, attacks on the Capitol: The revelation that many of the ringleaders and their misguided followers hailed from Central Florida was a gut check, but that knowledge was tempered by the understanding that these groups, who called themselves 'Oath Keepers' and 'Proud Boys,' were in fact too ashamed of their own hateful ideology to embrace it publicly. Within a year, Orlando residents will see the new Pulse memorial taking shape at the corner of Kaley Street and Orange Avenue, and it will be beautiful: A stirring, color-shifting tribute to the 49 angels who died that morning, and the community that is still brought to tears by their memory. But residents don't need to wait for architects or builders to remember those victims, or to protect their legacy. We honor the victims of Pulse by rejecting attempts to divide us, by celebrating our shared humanity, and by remaining Orlando United — not just today, but every day.
