Mexico eases trade ban on Brazilian chicken

Yahoo2 days ago

SAO PAULO (Reuters) -Mexico eased a ban on chicken shipments from Brazil, setting the restriction now only to products coming from the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, instead of a previous countrywide ban, Brazil's Agriculture Ministry said on Tuesday.
On the other hand, the ministry said in a statement that Mauritania announced a countrywide ban on imports of Brazilian chicken, while Oman suspended chicken imports coming from Rio Grande do Sul state.
Brazil last month identified a case of bird flu on a commercial farm in Rio Grande do Sul, triggering trade restrictions from dozens of countries.

JP Morgan maintains 2025 forecast for oil prices in low-to-mid $60s

(Reuters) - JP Morgan downplayed geopolitical concerns on Thursday and maintained its base case forecast for oil prices to stay in the low-to-mid $60s through 2025 and $60 in 2026, but said certain worst-case scenarios could send prices surging to double those levels. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday the United States was moving personnel out of the Middle East because it "could be a dangerous place". He also said the U.S. would not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. Iran has said its nuclear activity is peaceful. Increased tension with Iran has raised the prospect of disruption to oil supplies, with both sides set to meet on Sunday. The geopolitical risk premium is already at least partially reflected in current oil prices, which are just under $70, trading about $4 higher than their estimated fair value of $66 for June, JP Morgan said in a Thursday note. However, the analysts drew attention to certain worst-case scenarios, where the impact on supply could potentially extend beyond a 2.1 million barrels per day reduction in Iranian oil exports. Attention is focused on the risk that a broader Middle East conflict could close the Strait of Hormuz, or provoke retaliatory responses from major oil producing countries in the region. "Under this severe outcome, we estimate oil prices could surge to the $120-130/bbl range," they said. Brent crude futures were trading near $68.76 per barrel on Thursday, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were at $67.14 per barrel. [O/R] If nuclear negotiations fail and conflict arises with the United States, Iran will strike American bases in the region, Iranian Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh said on Wednesday, days ahead of a planned sixth round of Iran-U.S. nuclear talks. The U.N. nuclear watchdog's board of governors declared Iran in breach of its non-proliferation obligations on Thursday and Tehran announced counter-measures, as tensions rose in the Middle East. Tesco's UK sales growth accelerates in 'intensely competitive' market

By James Davey LONDON (Reuters) -Tesco, Britain's biggest food retailer, reported a better-than-expected pick-up in underlying sales growth in its first quarter and won market share from rivals, saying improvements in value, product quality and service were chiming with consumers. The group, whose share of Britain's grocery market has grown this year to 28%, a level not seen since 2016, did, however, leave its profit guidance for the full year unchanged on Thursday, with CEO Ken Murphy saying the market "remains intensely competitive". Shares in Tesco were up 2% after it said UK like-for-like sales rose 5.1% in the 13 weeks to May 24, having been up 4.3% in the previous quarter. Group sales were 16.4 billion pounds ($22.2 billion), up 4.6% on a like-for-like basis. Murphy said the UK outcome reflected "our powerful value proposition, strong availability and focus on product quality and innovation". Tesco's update bucked wider industry data published on Tuesday showing British consumer spending on non-food items lost momentum in May as households' confidence in their personal finances fell. STAYING TOE-TO-TOE Tesco said it still expected to report adjusted operating profit of between 2.7 billion and 3.0 billion pounds for the year ending February 2026, down from the 3.13 billion pounds achieved in 2024/25. The group had said in April it expected profit to fall in its 2025/26 year as it set aside cash to deal with a step-up in the "competitive intensity" of the British grocery market - a reference to a pledge of sustained price cuts from Asda, the number three player, which has been losing market share. "We're definitely seeing an intensification in competition, I think that broadly though it's been a rational intensification, in the sense that everybody is kind of staying toe-to-toe with each other," Murphy told reporters. "So you're not necessarily seeing massive movements in relative competitiveness but everyone has, I think, upped their game a notch." He said inflation at Tesco was running at below the industry rate - which jumped to 4.1% in May, according to market researcher Kantar. Most analysts think Tesco's strategy of matching the prices of discounter Aldi on hundreds of key items, together with heavy promotion of its Clubcard loyalty scheme, which provides lower prices for members, is working well. Tesco is also becoming increasingly digital, stepping up personalised engagement with customers and developing growth avenues such as its online Marketplace platform and retail media. "(Tesco) appears to be in a better position than many of its peers," John Moore, wealth manager at RBC Brewin Dolphin, said. ($1 = 0.7377 pounds) Sign in to access your portfolio

Factbox-Air India disaster is first fatal Boeing 787 accident

(Reuters) -More than 200 people were killed when an Air India Boeing 787 bound for London with 242 people on board crashed minutes after taking off from India's western city of Ahmedabad on Thursday. Here are some details on the wide-body intercontinental jet: The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is one of the most advanced jets in service and experts say it has a generally strong safety record, with no previous fatal accidents. Boeing said it was aware of initial reports and working to gather more information. * The 787-8 aircraft involved in Thursday's accident was delivered in 2014 and is the smallest of three variants. * The 787-8 typically holds 248 passengers and the larger and longer-range 787-9 carries 296 people. The largest variant, the 787-10, which also has the smallest range, has 336 seats, according to Boeing data. * The twin-engined 787 comes with a choice of two types of engine, supplied by GE Aerospace or Britain's Rolls-Royce. The engines on the crashed plane were supplied by GE, which said it would support the investigation. * Boeing has sold more than 2,500 787s, including 47 to Air India. It has delivered 1,189 jets to airlines or lessors, but has been beset in recent years by production delays, adding to a broader corporate crisis at America's largest exporter. * The 787 first flew in 2011 and entered service in the same year after development delays. * Its creation marked a breakthrough in design, promising 20% greater fuel efficiency through the use of durable, lightweight composite materials and more electrical systems. * Its size, range and efficiency made it ideal for opening new routes, bypassing hubs served by jumbos such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380 and helping drive both jets out of production. * Airbus followed suit by developing the A350 composite jet. * The 787 also pioneered a new way of building planes, outsourcing much of the structure and components to companies around the world and assembling the pieces in Everett, Washington, and later North Charleston, South Carolina. But the shake-up led to problems in the supply chain and Boeing later acknowledged it had gone too far with outsourcing. PREVIOUS INCIDENTS: * In July 2013, an empty Ethiopian Airlines 787 caught fire on the ground at Heathrow airport in London in an incident later linked to a short-circuit in an Emergency Locator Transmitter. * Also in 2013, regulators temporarily grounded the global 787 fleet following the overheating of lithium batteries on two Japanese planes in Tokyo and Boston, resulting in design changes to better contain the risk of thermal runaway. * In March last year, at least 50 people were hurt when a 787 operated by LATAM Airlines dropped abruptly in mid-flight from Sydney to Auckland. Investigators focused on an involuntary forward movement in the pilot seat.
