WWE star Zelina Vega recalls wrestling in NJ, making history as US champ and touts SummerSlam
WWE SummerSlam will be a two-night event for the first time in its history when the premium live event takes place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, later this summer.
For Zelina Vega, it will be a homecoming of sorts.
The current women's United States champion grew up two rivers to the east in Queens, New York, but got her legs underneath her as a wrestler in the Garden State, specifically in Union City.
"I was training at the Ace Arena in Jersey for a while," Vega shared with Fox News Digital in a recent interview. "Me and A.J. Lee actually trained together in Jersey and it also kind of helped me prepared for the role, if I'm going to be honest, in 'Fighting with My Family' to play her. It was just getting to know her then and applying that now and seeing it where it all kind of went down.
"But yeah, I spent a lot of time in New Jersey training and just that whole New York/New Jersey feel, it was just where I was constantly when I was coming."
Vega won the Women's United States Championship in a match against Chelsea Green after WrestleMania 41. The title was added to the menu as another opportunity for the loaded women's roster on "SmackDown." The "Raw" roster has the Women's Intercontinental Championship.
Vega told Fox News Digital previously that she hoped WWE was going to add a midcard title to the fold, and now she holds the belt – the first singles championship of her career in the company.
"It feels amazing … When I was growing up, I just wanted to be a part of it," she said. "And of course, I wanted to be champion. I made this huge thing in my mind when I was a kid, I was like, 'I'm gonna be champion, this is gonna happen for me.' I didn't see a Plan B in my mind.
"Now, it's like, not only did you make it, not only you're champion, you're also a part of history. First-ever Queen of the Ring, like I never thought that was gonna happen. So, it's still shocking me but also that eight-year-old Thea that was like trying to get all of this sorted out in my mind. I didn't see a Plan B, I was so stubborn. I was like, 'No, this is happening.' So, proving her right, it feels like the most amazing feeling."
Vega, as confident as ever that she will be walking into SummerSlam as the champion, also had advice for the young girls who are looking up at her.
"It's just, never give up on you because you will have so many nos, you will have so many people giving you reasons as to why you shouldn't be champion, why you shouldn't make it where you want to be," she explained to Fox News Digital. "But as long as you don't give up on you, no one's going to stop you.
"You don't take 'no' for an answer and you don't give up on yourself. If I can do this and I can stand here as champion, it should be proven in so many people's minds that your own determination is what's going to get you where you need to be."
Fans interested in attending SummerSlam can get their tickets on Ticketmaster. The event will take place on Aug. 2 and Aug. 3.
"It's our first-ever two-night SummerSlam, which is crazy because usually that's only WrestleMania," she said. "There's a lot of buzz about it. The whole week is really gonna be amazing because it's in just where I grew up. So, it's kinda cool to feel like it's a coming home feeling, whether it's 'Raw,' 'SmackDown,' and then the two-day SummerSlam. It's gonna be really fun."

NJ Gov Phil Murphy preparing for World Cup 1 year out: 'Most-watched event in human history'
JERSEY CITY, NJ – Wednesday marks exactly one year until the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in North America, and the party got started in the state where the final will be played. It's the first time since 1994 that the continent is playing host to the most popular sporting event in the world, and Phil Murphy's New Jersey will be the site of the final. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford will host eight matches total, including five in the group stage and games in both the rounds of 32 and 16. In speaking to the media on Wednesday at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, the location of the official 2026 World Cup fan festival, Murphy predicted that the final at the home of the New York Giants and Jets will be "the most-watched event in human history." And for those in attendance, "the MetLife experience will be outstanding," said Murphy. "It will be secure and safe, easy to get in and out, great experience for the fans once they're in the stadium," Murphy continued. "This is what it's all about. A bunch of preparation, and now being able to show our vision and get the reaction we got, which was excitement, energy, interest. This is what it's all about," added Alex Lasry, CEO of the NYNJ Host Committee. "It's real. We're a year out, and to see the reaction from everyone of how much excitement there is for the World Cup makes us that much more excited." Liberty State Park is the home to tremendous views of the New York City skyline and the Statue of Liberty while filled with greenery, making it the perfect spot for fans to gather. So, while Murphy will undoubtedly be at all eight World Cup games played at MetLife, there is a further responsibility to make sure that fans are entertained for the other 96 contests played in the other 15 host stadiums. "The fan fest, it's going to be beyond words. Twenty-two screens, capacity of 45,000. When we're not at MetLife, we'll be here watching. Those experiences are extraordinary. This will be no exception," Murphy added. "When you look at the ability for people to get here from New York and New Jersey, the iconic skyline and views from this, and then, when you're just thinking of where to put on the party, there's nowhere better," Lasry said. "It's a unique place to put on the most iconic fan fest that we're looking at. To be able to do that in New Jersey with the view of New York, it kind of brings together the partnership." The 2026 FIFA World Cup takes place in North America next year and will be featured on FOX Sports. A Timeline of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's Relationship
Was there anything cuter than the sight of Swift's massive grin as she took in her very first Chiefs game featuring Kelce? And next to Kelce's mother Donna, no less? Absolutely not. October 2023: Swift brings the girlies to see Kelce play Once your friends are showing up to see your boyfriend play, it's officially so real (for an NFL GF, anyway). That's what happened in October of 2023 when Swift brought some of her tailgate squad—which has included Blake Lively, Sabrina Carpenter, and Sophie Turner—to watch the Chiefs play the New York Jets in New Jersey. November 2023: Kelce hits the Eras tour with Swift's dad Once Swift became football-watching buddies with Kelce's mom, it was only a matter of time before Kelce and Swift's father Scott had a boys' night out in the VIP section at the Eras Tour. A truly heartwarming way for two men to spend time together, IMO! December 2024: Swift speaks publicly about dating Kelce for the first time Swift admitted in her Time Person of the Year cover interview that her relationship with Kelce started when he 'very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell.' She went on: 'We started hanging out right after that. So we actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I'm grateful for, because we got to get to know each other.' And, no, for the record, their first date wasn't at a Chiefs game. 'By the time I went to that first game, we were a couple. I think some people think that they saw our first date at that game? We would never be psychotic enough to hard launch a first date,' Swift said. January 2024: Swift and Kelce engage in some post-game PDA

Yankees' Marcus Stroman walks back starter-only stance: ‘Open to anything'
BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — New York Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Stroman has changed his mind about reconsidering his role with the club. The right-hander said he would be open to pitching out of the bullpen when he returns from the injured list after declaring that he wouldn't do it just a few months ago. Advertisement 'I'm open to anything,' he said after making his first rehab start at Double-A Somerset on Wednesday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark. With the Yankees in Kansas City, Stroman threw 3 1/3 innings, striking out four, walking two and giving up one hit and one earned run. He threw 46 pitches and touched 89 mph several times with his sinker, though he appeared to throw all of his pitches. Stroman has been on the IL with left knee inflammation since April 12. He said the problem is the ACL that he tore in college. 'There's a bunch of a little mess going on there,' he said. 'I don't really even like to talk about it at this point. It just is what it is. It's 10 years removed on an ACL.' Stroman added that he had a cortisone shot and a nerve blocker. 'It was something that I was feeling walking around,' he said. Nice ovation for Marcus Stroman, who went 3 1/3 innings, striking out four with two walks, a hit and one earned run. Threw 46 pitches. Touched 89 mph a bunch with the sinker. — Brendan Kuty 🧟♂️ (@BrendanKutyNJ) June 11, 2025 Stroman said he had been dealing with a 'crazy deep throb' and 'ache' in his knee, which has improved of late. He said he expected to feel soreness Thursday morning, but that he's learning to deal with it, and that he expects to make another rehab start next week. 'Way more confident position with my knee now than I was,' he said. It's unclear what kind of role the Yankees may have for Stroman when he returns. They have a full five-man rotation with Ryan Yarbrough lately emerging as a viable fifth starter after they moved on from veteran Carlos Carrasco. Righty Luis Gil, who played catch at Somerset on Wednesday, is also working his way back from the injured list and could return sometime around the All-Star break. Gil won the American League Rookie of the Year last year. Advertisement In spring training, there also didn't appear to be a spot in the rotation for Stroman, but then ace Gerrit Cole had Tommy John surgery, Gil strained his lat and Clarke Schmidt had right rotator cuff tendonitis. Stroman wound up making three starts before going on the IL, posting an 0-1 record with an 11.57 ERA. Stroman said he hasn't spoken with the Yankees about his expected role yet. 'Just very open to whatever it may be,' he said. Stroman had financial motivation to remain a starting pitcher going into the season. His $17-million option for 2026 would have kicked in if he pitched 140 innings this year. It's now virtually impossible for him to reach that mark this season. In February, he shot down talk of him potentially going into a relief role. 'I'm a starter,' he said at the time. 'I won't pitch in the bullpen.' Now, things have changed. 'I think everybody who has been a starter would want to be a starter,' he said. 'I think that's just natural at this point. I don't think anybody who has had a career like I've had starting would just voluntarily say … you know. But obviously we have an incredible team, you don't know how the season's going to play out. There's always a bunch of things that happen. So, yeah, I'm looking to get back to 100 percent, which I feel pretty close (to). Build my pitch count and take it from there.'
