WWE star Zelina Vega recalls wrestling in NJ, making history as US champ and touts SummerSlam

Fox News14-05-2025

WWE SummerSlam will be a two-night event for the first time in its history when the premium live event takes place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, later this summer.
For Zelina Vega, it will be a homecoming of sorts.
The current women's United States champion grew up two rivers to the east in Queens, New York, but got her legs underneath her as a wrestler in the Garden State, specifically in Union City.
"I was training at the Ace Arena in Jersey for a while," Vega shared with Fox News Digital in a recent interview. "Me and A.J. Lee actually trained together in Jersey and it also kind of helped me prepared for the role, if I'm going to be honest, in 'Fighting with My Family' to play her. It was just getting to know her then and applying that now and seeing it where it all kind of went down.
"But yeah, I spent a lot of time in New Jersey training and just that whole New York/New Jersey feel, it was just where I was constantly when I was coming."
Vega won the Women's United States Championship in a match against Chelsea Green after WrestleMania 41. The title was added to the menu as another opportunity for the loaded women's roster on "SmackDown." The "Raw" roster has the Women's Intercontinental Championship.
Vega told Fox News Digital previously that she hoped WWE was going to add a midcard title to the fold, and now she holds the belt – the first singles championship of her career in the company.
"It feels amazing … When I was growing up, I just wanted to be a part of it," she said. "And of course, I wanted to be champion. I made this huge thing in my mind when I was a kid, I was like, 'I'm gonna be champion, this is gonna happen for me.' I didn't see a Plan B in my mind.
"Now, it's like, not only did you make it, not only you're champion, you're also a part of history. First-ever Queen of the Ring, like I never thought that was gonna happen. So, it's still shocking me but also that eight-year-old Thea that was like trying to get all of this sorted out in my mind. I didn't see a Plan B, I was so stubborn. I was like, 'No, this is happening.' So, proving her right, it feels like the most amazing feeling."
Vega, as confident as ever that she will be walking into SummerSlam as the champion, also had advice for the young girls who are looking up at her.
"It's just, never give up on you because you will have so many nos, you will have so many people giving you reasons as to why you shouldn't be champion, why you shouldn't make it where you want to be," she explained to Fox News Digital. "But as long as you don't give up on you, no one's going to stop you.
"You don't take 'no' for an answer and you don't give up on yourself. If I can do this and I can stand here as champion, it should be proven in so many people's minds that your own determination is what's going to get you where you need to be."
Fans interested in attending SummerSlam can get their tickets on Ticketmaster. The event will take place on Aug. 2 and Aug. 3.
"It's our first-ever two-night SummerSlam, which is crazy because usually that's only WrestleMania," she said. "There's a lot of buzz about it. The whole week is really gonna be amazing because it's in just where I grew up. So, it's kinda cool to feel like it's a coming home feeling, whether it's 'Raw,' 'SmackDown,' and then the two-day SummerSlam. It's gonna be really fun."

John Cena Gets Brutally Honest About the Real Reason He Opened His Legendary Gym

John Cena Gets Brutally Honest About the Real Reason He Opened His Legendary Gym originally appeared on Men's Fitness. On the outside, John Cena's gym doesn't look like much—but it's shaped some of WWE's biggest names. Cena gave Stephanie McMahon a tour of, Hard Nocks South, his gym located in Tampa, Florida. Cena opened Hard Nocks South in 2008 because he was tired of training in gyms he didn't like. He wanted his own space—one built around serious lifting. "Believe it or not, I was just sick of working out at shitty places," Cena answered when asked about what inspired him to open the gym. The name comes from Hard Nocks, a gym in Amesbury, Massachusetts owned by Dave Nock where Cena first started lifting. Before WWE opened its official Performance Center in Orlando, Florida in 2013, Cena's gym became a training ground for many top superstars—including Roman Reigns and Seth of the gym, there's a stacked dumbbell rack, lifting platforms, power racks, barbells, plates, medicine balls, and more. But you won't find rows of treadmills or fancy equipment, it's purely old school. If you were expecting an aesthetics-driven, modern gym—this isn't it. The walls are bare, the paint is nonexistent, but the history runs deep. Hanging next to a massive American flag is a "Top 10 of All Time" board. These are the best lifts ever recorded at the gym. One name stands out: Ettore Ewen—known in WWE as Big E—holding the bench press record with 575 pounds. "It's Ettore's world and we're all just living in it," Cena says. The gym has also become a place for support outside of training. " This is a very safe space for conversation to be kicked around, for you to have a bad day but not stay in a bad day," he says. The rules of Cena's gym are very simple: no music, no Smith machines, embrace the squat, and rack your weights, as he shared with Muscle and Fitness. New UFC champion Kayla Harrison describes 'surreal' celebration with Trump outside Octagon

UFC star Kayla Harrison described the "surreal moment" she celebrated her UFC title win with President Donald Trump. "I've had the honor and privilege of representing our country on the biggest stage for the sport and… I've been to two Olympic Games. At my first Olympic Games, President Putin was in the audience during my finals. … But I've never had the honor or privilege of competing in front of the leader of my country, and that was a special thing," the newly crowned bantamweight champion told "Fox & Friends" co-host Lawrence Jones on Wednesday. "I'm very proud to be an American," she added. "And anytime you get an opportunity like that, you'd better make the most of it." Harrison defeated Julianna Peña on Saturday night at UFC 316 via submission to win the championship, leaving her mark on the sport and setting herself up for an epic fight against former champion Amanda Nunes. After her win, she stepped outside the octagon where President Trump, who was attending the matches that took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, greeted her and the two embraced. She described her excitement at seeing Trump along with boxing legend Mike Tyson after the fight. "The President of the United States is giving me a kiss on my cheek, and I'm like, holy (cow)," she said. "And then Mike Tyson is right there! I'm like, am I in a movie right now? What is happening?" Harrison put her championship belt on Trump's shoulder as the crowd cheered. The UFC champ said she attributes her success to her faith in God, especially during the difficult process of cutting her weight to 135 pounds before fight night. Reflecting on her accomplishments in the sport, she emphasized how grateful she is to live in a country that gives her the chance to follow her dreams. "We are very blessed to be Americans and to live as free citizens in this great country. If I was born 90 miles south in Cuba and I did judo I would make $28 a week. So that puts it in perspective for me, and it keeps me humble and there really is no place like home."

2025 Club World Cup odds: Why backing Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid to pip PSG makes sense

For more stories like this, click here to follow The Athletic's sports betting section and have them added to your feed. The FIFA Club World Cup is here and, if you're like us, well, you don't know what to make of it. But the fact of the matter is, it's a summer football tournament featuring some of the best teams across the globe. Advertisement If you plan on strapping yourself to the sofa from June 14 to July 13, it's probably worth having a gander at the betting markets. Unlike the domestic season, where every team wants to claim silverware, there's probably going to be some questionable levels of motivation to consider when placing wagers. A club like Real Madrid — the outright betting favourites — should have no problem dispatching the Al-Hilals of the world, but will they care enough to do so? Will Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and the rest of the chasing pack worry about protecting players? Or will they brush aside the concerns all in the name of winning another trophy? We'll dive into the top five Club World Cup winner favourites and see if we can suss out which of the teams will back up their odds in a month's time. Brett Koremenos: After a disappointing season by the club's lofty standards, Los Blancos have all the motivation in the world to carve a path to New Jersey and beyond. Xabi Alonso's arrival also adds an element of intrigue. Presumably, there will be a clear directive from the new boss to utilise these games to implement his tactics and kick off his tenure with a signature win. On the pitch, the acquisition of Trent Alexander-Arnold could be a game-changer. Madrid's passing was a key issue last season, and Alexander-Arnold has already proven at Liverpool that he's a ball-progressing, chance-creation machine. He also fills a major hole at right back. Madrid should be a dominant force this season with him in the side. Throw in their incentive to purge a plunderless Champions League campaign from the collective mind and 4/1 odds seem rather tempting. Sam Tighe: Expect PSG's immense swagger and confidence in possession to hit the accelerator now they've been crowned European champions. They're better than everyone else, they know it, and now they have the proof. The earlier question of how bothered this team will be about this tournament, though, is very fair. Of all the UEFA representatives, PSG could justifiably be the least interested. They're probably the only side present who don't need the riches that winning it would bring, and also potentially knackered. They won the treble, then seven of their first-choice players played in the UEFA Nations League finals. Advertisement Is there any chance these guys could get a moment to, you know, celebrate their incredible achievements? They're rightly priced as a strong contender to win because they're the best team in the world. But in terms of motivation, they'll be lightyears behind Real Madrid, which seems to be a key factor for the bookmakers. Koremenos: Unlike Madrid, City's transfer additions lead to more questions than answers. Joško Gvardiol would be an amazing player at any position, but he was a world-destroying force as a left-back. Yet Rayan Aït-Nouri has been brought into the fold. Pep Guardiola also spent half of last season trying to mend a shattered defence — and he succeeded by the end of the season. This makes it all the more puzzling that he signed two midfielders, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, (maybe they got a deal on Rayans?) who contribute nothing to the defence. With Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish all on their way out the door, this team feels like a major work in progress. Not only are 11/2 odds for City intriguingly low, but there's also a real chance with all these moving pieces that we see some shocking results. Guardiola may also view this as an opportunity to tinker with his new toys rather than just trying to churn out results. Tighe: Well, Harry Kane's excited. That much we can confirm. He has a fair point about supposed inaugural tournaments carrying a 'unique' flavour, and as a natural goalscorer, will probably be hell-bent on being crowned the first Club World Cup Golden Boot winner. If he achieves that, Bayern will inevitably have gone far — unless of course he scores nine against Auckland City, then none against anyone else. Die Rekordmeister have paid some nominal fees to bring two summer signings — Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof — into the fold early, so that they can play in the United States. The former should prove to be immediately important, as Bayern's centre-backs corps is very injured and in need of help. Tighe: Chelsea round off the top five favourites, pipping the likes of Atlético Madrid (12/1) and Champions League finalists Inter (14/1), plus every non-UEFA representative. At first glance that seems generous to the Blues, but they did win five of their last six Premier League games to secure a top-five berth. Advertisement They're also adding a lot of fresh energy to the squad: Dário Essugo, Liam Delap and Mamadou Sarr are all new signings who will take part in the tournament. Meanwhile, Andrey Santos and Mike Penders, who spent the 2024-25 season out on loan, will also be added to the pile. That creates a dynamic in which a fair chunk of Chelsea's squad will be raring to go and eager to impress — a ripple effect that could result in the rest raising their game.
