Stop filming medical treatments for TikTok, NHS staff warn patients

People are risking their health and that of others by filming medical procedures for TikTok and Instagram, medics have warned.
The Society of Radiographers (SoR) said filming NHS staff and treatments places undue stress on health professionals during treatments, and risks publicising people's private medical data.
Filming can also distract staff and cause them discomfort, potentially compromising the quality of treatment provided, the society warned.
It said there has been a worrying trend of people videoing their procedures on their phones, often without asking permission.
The SoR is calling for clear and widespread NHS policies that prevent patients from filming or photographing their procedures without explicit permission.
This will ensure a safer and more respectful environment for both staff and patients, it said.
Ashley d'Aquino, a therapeutic radiographer working in London, told the SoR's Annual Delegates' Conference that she had been approached by other members of staff, in her capacity as a union representative, over patients recording some of their cancer treatment.
She added: 'I had one patient whose relative started filming while I was trying to set up the treatment. It wasn't the right time – I was trying to focus on delivering the treatment.
'We had another member of staff who agreed to take photos for a patient.
'But when the patient handed over her phone, the member of staff saw that the patient had also been covertly recording her to publish on her cancer blog.'
Most NHS staff wear identity badges and their names and job titles may be visible on videos posted online.
'It makes people feel very uncomfortable and anxious,' Ms d'Aquino added.
A radiology department assistant from the south coast was using a cannular on a cancer patient, and the patient's 19-year-old daughter started filming the procedure.
'She wanted to record the cannulation because she thought it would be entertaining on social media,' she said. 'But she didn't ask permission.
'In the next bay, a patient was having consent taken for a virtual colonoscopy, which is an invasive and potentially embarrassing procedure.
'That could have all been recorded on the film – including names and dates of birth.
'Anyone could be in the room – you don't know their personal story.
'There are people who come into our department who have a limited social media presence because of risks to their safety. Patients filming make them feel unsafe in their own hospital.
'I spent the weekend afterwards worrying: did I do my job properly? I know I did, but no-one's perfect all the time, and this was recorded. I don't think I slept for the whole weekend.'
Dean Rogers, SoR director of industrial strategy and member relations, said the issue affects all health workers.
He said there are some hospitals which have good policies around patients taking photos and filming procedures. However, he said this must in place in all hospitals trusts across the country.
'Hospitals need to ensure that they meet the needs of patients while also looking after staff members' wellbeing,' Mr Rogers said.
'And, in this case, safeguarding the one simultaneously safeguards the other – allowing healthcare professionals to do their job in safety, while also protecting patients' privacy and helping them to receive the best possible care.'
Ms d'Aquino said there may be some valid reasons for patients to record medical conversations.
'Patients making audio recordings of consultations, for example, can enhance their understanding and retention of medical information,' she said.
Professor Meghana Pandit, NHS England's co-national medical director for secondary care, said: 'We want to do everything possible to support patients' understanding of their diagnosis and treatment, but it's vital that, if patients wish to record any part of their NHS care, they discuss this with their healthcare professional first and it remains for personal use only.'

The opportunity to give the talk is the next step in her 'MS without Barriers' campaign, which Nielsen started in November last year, with the aim of changing people's perception of MS and help those living with it. 'Continuing this campaign is something that I hope to do for the rest of my life,' said Nielsen, who won 4x400m relay bronze in Paris last summer. 'We need to keep talking about MS and raising awareness about it because of the fact so few people get diagnosed, it is not something that's at the forefront. 'It is about fighting to be heard and hopefully it can be us leading the fight and carrying on changing people's lives.' Nielsen was part of the British team, alongside her twin sister Laviai, who also has MS, that seized a spot on the Parisian podium last year. The pair's achievements show that having MS doesn't have to define what a person can and can't do, and Nielsen is keen to use her platform to break down barriers and get that message across. 'I can definitely reach a lot more people with the platform of having been to the Olympics,' she continued. 'I gained so many more followers so a lot of people learned about me, and about MS and what it is. 'I'm very grateful to have had that platform and that I've been able to showcase, not so much that everyone who lives with MS should be a high-performance athlete, but that MS takes different forms, and can be different for everyone, but doesn't have to stop you achieving your goals, big or small. 'I just want to show what is possible and that MS doesn't always look the way people expect it to. And hopefully with my platform, more and more people can feel empowered to tell their story.' MS is an autoimmune neurological condition, affecting the brain and spinal cord, where the body's own immune system attacks its nerves. MS affects 2.5 times more women than men. In the UK, it is estimated there are more than 150,000 people with MS, which equates to around one in every 400 people. The symptoms of MS vary, but they can affect all parts of the body, which means MS can take time to diagnose and this also contributes to misconceptions about the condition. In creating the 'MS without Barriers' campaign, Nielsen joined forces with global pharmaceutical company Sanofi, a company she described as 'so committed to changing people's lives', to make the initiative a reality. And after speaking in front of figures from the world of healthcare and local politics, Nielsen hopes to continue with her goal of raising awareness, educating those that can affect change and challenge misconceptions. 'The main thing to get across is we're talking about the initial diagnosis process and how difficult that can be for someone to, number one, receive a diagnosis, and number two, then navigate their life after getting that diagnosis,' she added. 'For me, that take-home message is how a patient leaves that room can make or break a human being's life. 'That is what this campaign is all about, breaking down barriers by talking more about MS, there'll be then more and more research into it and then one day we might have a cure. Symptoms can differentiate a Covid infection from hay fever, despite some signs of these conditions overlapping. There are distinct ways to tell them apart. This year has seen millions across Britain grappling with the annoyance of hay fever symptoms as the Met Office reports "very high" pollen counts in certain areas. Hay fever is triggered by an allergic reaction to airborne allergens like pollen, often leading to sneezing, a blocked nose, headaches, and even loss of smell which overlap with COVID-19 indicators. Dr Luke Powles, an associate clinical director at Bupa, stated: "Despite Hay fever being more common during the spring and summer, some people are affected by pollen from March to September. This can make it harder to tell if sniffs and sneezes are being caused by an allergy or an infection such as coronavirus." A concern for many is the spread of a new Covid variant known as NB. 1.8.1 (or Nimbus) throughout the UK. As per data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), hospital admissions for Covid have jumped by nearly 10 percent with 947 patients admitted in the week ending May 31, reports Surrey Live. However, there are ways to distinguish hay fever from Covid. The main sign to look for is a high temperature, which occurs when someone has coronavirus but not hay fever. The NHS says this means "you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)". It can also cause shivering. Dr Powles noted that a temperature is "not likely" to occur with hay fever. He explained: "Although a blocked nose due to hay fever can affect your sense of smell or taste, completely losing your ability to taste or smell is more likely to result from coronavirus." Furthermore, Covid tends to make the affected person feel more unwell in general. "Hay fever symptoms aren't usually serious and, generally, you won't feel too ill," he added. In contrast, Covid can be severe in some cases, with symptoms lasting weeks, months, or even years in the case of long Covid. According to the NHS, "The symptoms [of Covid] are very similar to symptoms of other illnesses, such as colds and flu. "Most people feel better within a few weeks, but it can take longer to recover." Additionally, Covid can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, which are not typically associated with hay fever. These symptoms include feeling or being sick and experiencing diarrhoea. If you suspect you have Covid, it is recommended to stay at home and avoid contact with others if you or your child have symptoms and either: Have a high temperature Do not feel well enough to go to work, school, childcare, or engage in normal activities The NHS advises that you can resume "normal activities" when you feel better or no longer have a high temperature.
