Andrew Johns' telling claim about DCE's next move as Tom Trbojevic dragged into saga

Yahoo26-03-2025

Andrew Johns has claimed Daly Cherry-Evans may have made a verbal agreement with a rival club before his announcement as Phil Gould claimed clubs are not surprised with the halfback's decision to leave after rumblings around Tom Trbojevic. Cherry-Evans' announcement he will leave the Manly Sea Eagles in 2026 has rocked the NRL with fans questioning where the halfback will finish his career.
Both Cherry-Evans and Manly have come under scrutiny since the interview with plenty of reports suggesting there is a disconnect at the club. Reporter James Hooper made the bombshell claim on Wednesday the Cherry-Evans asked for a release 12 months earlier, which the club shut down.
Cherry-Evans could opt to retire at the 2025 season, but the overwhelming consensus is he will finish his career at a rival club. The 36-year-old has been heavily linked with a number of clubs, but the frontrunner to sign the veteran is the Roosters.
Cherry-Evans' management team are also in charge of Roosters superstar James Tedesco, and Cowboys hooker Reece Robson. The Sydney club is looking to strengthen their squad next year with Robson joining the Rooster in 2026, leading to speculation Cherry-Evans' management are trying to assemble a superstar spine at the Bondi club.
The added bonus for Cherry-Evans is the Roosters have plenty of room in their salary cap and he wouldn't have to leave Sydney with his young family. On Tuesday, Broncos legend Darren Lockyer claimed Cherry-Evans would work well with Roosters playmaker Sam Walker if he joined the club.
And speaking on Wednesday, NRL Immortal Johns admitted he was stunned Cherry-Evans was leaving the club he has played for since 2011. But the legendary halfback admitted he feels Cherry-Evans is savvy enough to have arranged a move to another club before he made the announcement.
"I could not believe it. If someone had said to me at the start of the year Daly Cherry-Evans won't finish at Manly would have laughed at them," Johns said on the Freddy And The Eighth show. "I think there has already been a deal done. I don't think he's signed, but I think he's agreed to terms with a handshake or a wink."
Johns then suggested Cherry-Evans could very well end up at the Roosters having turned to his former teammate Brad Fittler. "Why wouldn't he?" Fittler said of Cherry-Evans joining the Roosters. "They've got plenty of space.
The thing I think with Daly is he is an intelligent bloke and he is very calculated. I can't imagine Daly coming out and saying, 'You know what, I'm not going to play with Manly next year' and not know what his future is looking like."
Both Fittler and Johns believe the halfback has been working since the end of last year to line-up a deal and it appears the Roosters could be ready to make a play. However, Bulldogs supremo Gould suggested he isn't as surprised as his counterparts with the news Cherry-Evans is leaving.
On Wednesday night, Hooper claimed Cherry-Evans tried to leave the club 12 months ago. Hooper suggested Cherry-Evans' announcement he would not re-sign with the club isn't a snap decision, but one he has been eyeing for a while.
And Bulldogs general manager of football Gould has hinted clubs were aware of disconnection between the player and the Manly Sea Eagles heading into this season. And Gould also claimed eyebrows were raised when there were ongoing rumblings of Manly considering Trbojevic making the switch to five-eighth. This was despite Cherry-Evans still being contracted at the club.
"Was it a shock? No, I've got to be brutally honest, because there were rumblings about this late last season," he said on the Six Tackles with Gus podcast. "There was even mild media references around Manly considering a switch for Turbo [Tom Trbojevic] to go to five-eighth and [Lehi] Hopoate being the future at fullback."
Gould even claimed there were rumours within the NRL community Cherry-Evans was going to be offered to rival clubs this year. "There were rumblings and there was even a period there where people were saying he [Cherry-Evans] was going to be offered up for 2025. None of us believed it and just put it down to scuttlebutt and nobody took any notice.
"There was certainly smoke around that time of a change of position for Tom Trbojevic and maybe Daly Cherry-Evans moving on. Whether he got wind of that, whether it was accurate- I have no idea - but in hindsight maybe there was a little bit of truth to that."

Manly claim pressure-easing win over toothless Tigers

Manly's backline overhaul has netted Anthony Seibiold a much-needed win, doing enough to beat Wests Tigers 28-10. After a fortnight of spotlight on Seibold's job and the Sea Eagles' form, Manly were far from their best at Brookvale Oval but still put themselves back in the top eight. Their plan to give Tom Trbojevic some confidence playing at centre showed some signs of working, with the regular No.1 having a role in two tries. Some slick passing as Garrick goes over! 🦅#NRLManlyTigers — NRL (@NRL) June 27, 2025 But his replacement at fullback Lehi Hopoate had one of his toughest outings of the season, putting down two high balls and getting beaten to another. Still, it was enough for the Sea Eagles to consign the Tigers to their sixth straight loss, who desperately missed Jarome Luai in attack after he was ruled out with a boil. Adding to the Tigers' concerns was a concussion for Api Koroisau, that has the potential to stifle any chance of Tallyn Da Silva leaving before the June 30 deadline. After back-to-back losses to Newcastle and Gold Coast before last week's bye, Manly just needed a win no matter how ugly it was. And for large periods of the first half on Friday night, it was anything but pretty for both teams through a scoreless opening 39 minutes. Trbojevic was whacked by Jeral Skelton the only time he received it in a good area during that time, with Manly regularly going short rather than out the back. But when the Sea Eagles finally utilised the fullback-turned-centre again, the game started to turn. The only first-half try came through the 28-year-old, when Trbojevic got the ball 10 metres out and put Jason Saab over to score. Trbojevic was at it again to start the second half, going from right centre to the left side of the field to act as second receiver. That gave the Sea Eagles an extra number, with Trbojevic holding the ball up for Lehi Hopoate to send Reuben Garrick over with a cut-out ball. Another Manly try came down that side after Trbojevic had again created numbers early in the set, before Luke Brooks and Daly Cherry-Evans helped Tolu Koula score. Second-rowers Corey Waddell and Ben Trbojevic also went over in the second half, one from a Cherry-Evans short ball and another from the halfback's kick. There were still some questions over Tom Trbojevic's defence at centre, with the visitors' first try coming when Adam Douiehi put Alex Seyfarth past him and into a gaping hole. While the Tigers are clearly an improved outfit, they have now lost six in a row and will likely face the Sydney Roosters next week without Koroisau and Luai. Da Silva scored late out of dummy-half but looks likely to leave the club by year's end, while Latu Fainu lacked spark without Luai next to him.

Fresh calls for NRL rule change after Panthers forced to gift gun players to rivals

Matty Johns has claimed the salary cap needs to hand exemptions to clubs who develop young talent after the Penrith Panthers have struggled to keep their superstars together across the years. The Panthers' win over the table-topping Bulldogs on Thursday night sent a warning to the rest of the competition as Nathan Cleary and his side look to build momentum towards a fifth-straight premiership. The 8-6 win over the Bulldogs had the intensity of a finals game, but it showed the Panthers are still one of the favourites if they can put out a full strength side in 2025. However, it also showed how much talent has left the club due to salary cap pressure across the years. Matt Burton, Stephen Crichton and Viliame Kikau are all former Panthers players and left for bigger contracts in recent years to join the Bulldogs. All three have helped lift the Bulldogs to the top of the table in 2025 and it shows the depth and talent that has come from the Penrith junior system. And it has also prompted questions over whether the NRL needs to hand clubs salary cap relief to keep young players in their system. Speaking after the game, SEN Radio host Andrew Webster claimed it was a shame some of the premiership-winning stars couldn't remain in Penrith. This comes after they developed the likes of Burton, Crichton and Kikau, before watching them walk out the door. "This is why they need to really have a serious look at the salary cap. Penrith have produced all those players. You've got Isiah Katoa at the Dolphins and the Dragons are now looking at Luke Garner," he said on Friday. "That's what the salary cap does, but if there is not going to be a draft and you are not going to get any compensation for producing the talent for the rest of the competition they need to look at how to get some sort of salary cap relief to hold on to some of them." And this prompted Matty Johns to claim there needs to be a fix going forward so feeder clubs benefit from their own juniors. "this is one of the biggest things in the game. You want some of these teams with big catchment areas spending a lot of money on their juniors because they feed the rest of the competition," Johns added. The former Newcastle Knights five-eighth suggested his old team is one of the areas that gets raided and it's hard for the club to hold onto their players. "The issue is something started to change about 20 years ago in the game. Rather than teams spending money on their they started to do is go up to Newcastle to their trial games and pick the eyes out of their best kids." Garner is the latest Panthers player linked to a rival club with salary cap pressures on the Panthers. The versatile Penrith forward has now been linked to the Dragons who are looking to the future after shifting de Jack de Belin on to the Eels, according to NRL reporter Michael Chammas. Although earlier this year, Dragons coach Shane Flanagan did express his side was short of front-rowers and this was a key position he wanted to address. "That's an area they want to improve, but good luck finding a middle...I don't have your answer. Apparently they were looking at Luke Garner as a potential edge-player, but it doesn't solve their middles," Chammas said on Triple M Radio. Garner would add versatility and experience to the Dragons with the forward winning multiple premierships at the Panthers. The 29-year-old has played 114 first-grade games to date - 75 with the Wests Tigers and 39 with Penrith. This year he has filled in for Cleary's side at second-row, lock and in the centres. However, the club have reportedly allowed Garner to negotiate with other clubs with his deal running out at the end of 2026.

Jarome Luai ruled out in pre-Origin scare as Marshall forced into Tigers change

Jarome Luai has been ruled out of the Wests Tigers game against Manly on Friday night in a worry for the NSW Blues, while coach Benji Marshall has doubled down on the club's decision to prioritise Api Koroisau and his future. Luai has been forced to withdraw from the game on Friday with infection and will be looking to recover before a potential recall for Laurie Daley's NSW squad. This is poor timing for the Tigers who have lost five games in a row and are looking to turn around their form against an out-of-form Sea Eagles side. Despite the halfback coming down sick ahead of the game, Luai is expected to be back for Origin in just under two weeks time. In Luai's absence, Koroisau will slot into the No.7 jersey, while talented Da Silva will start at No.9. This move comes as young dummy-half Da Silva is set to leave the club, possibly before the 30 June deadline, with Marshall and the club looking to extend Koroisau's contract beyond the 2026 season. The 20-year-old has seen limited game time in 2025 with Da Silva an unused sub last week in the Tigers' loss. But Da Silva is reportedly set for a move on if Koroisau resigns past the 2026 season, which would give him no clear path into the starting XIII. Jarome Luai has been ruled out for the Tigers this weekend after spending time in hospital with an infections can be unpredictable Luai is expected to recover in time for Origin 3 at this to be a record number of infections in the NRL this season! — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) June 27, 2025 While Tigers fans are divided over whether letting the talented star walk out the door is the right choice, Marshall appears to have made up his mind. The coach said while Da Silva 'does want to be here', he wanted to extend Koroisau's stay at the club as their main man. 'The plan from the beginning is what we've executed, and nothing has changed,' Marshall said ahead of their game against Manly on Friday. 'He's a really good kid who has a bright future, and I understand the sentiment of, 'You need to try and keep them all', but at the same time we're putting our eggs into Api's basket for the next few years. 'He's the guy to help us win more games. To be fair, he's probably been our best player the past few years, and he's got more left in the tank. I can understand Tallyn wanting to play more minutes and be in first grade, and not wait behind him (Koroisau). It's hard to stop a guy in that instance. The difference is, he actually does want to be here. It's not like he's saying he wants out. He just wants to play first grade. 'Api is our captain as well. He plays 80 minutes each week, he puts in for the team, and has a lot left to give. We're prioritising that at the moment.' Marshall's comments all but confirm Da Silva will be seeking a new club for 2026 onwards with reports he could even be on the move to the Manly Sea Eagles or the Eels this year. Although Da Silva has been named on the bench against against Manly on Friday, which are one of the clubs wanting to sign the young star. Da Silva's expected exit comes as another hammer blow for Tigers fans given young half Lachie Galvin recently walked out to join the Bulldogs. Da Silva has played 23 first-grade games since his debut in 2023, and looks every bit an NRL-level player. But he's spent the majority of 2025 in reserve-grade due to the fact the Tigers have Koroisau entrenched as their No.9. Da Silva is contracted to the Tigers until the end of 2026, but The Tigers had already stated the 20-year-old was free to leave if they extend Koroisau's current contract (also ending at the end of 2026). But fans were left frustrated last week when Da Silva watched the game from the bench having not been used by Marshall in the loss to the Raiders. Koroisau played the full 80 minutes. Marshall was asked after the game why he didn't play the young dummy-half and he hit back. 'If there was an opportunity to put Tallyn on, I would have, but we needed Api on the field.' When pushed on whether the young gun was leaving the club, Marshall played it coy. "Not sure," he replied. Fans have already admitted they would like Da Silva to stay beyond his current contract. But the decision to leave him on the bench in yet another Tigers loss left fans perplexed. In isolation, no issue with TDS moving club moving both Large boys then letting Galvin and TDS also move on inside 12 months is the issue and has been the issue for years. It's not a strong junior base to draw from if you are left with no elite juniors. — NBWT (@NBWT__) June 20, 2025 Absolutely ridiculous we get Api for an extra year to lose TDS who is the future and 20.. already a shortage of good hookers in the comp.. where's the long term vision — Dylan (@Dylan1850) June 20, 2025
