England reveal Jofra Archer comeback plan ahead of India series
Jofra Archer is primed to make his return to Test cricket in the second encounter with India at Edgbaston next month – provided the Sussex seamer proves his fitness in the County Championship. Archer has not played first-class cricket of any kind since 2021 due to a series of injury issues, and was not considered for England selection for the first Test at Headingley as he works his way back from a broken thumb suffered at the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 30-year-old looks set to bolster England's options in Birmingham should he come through Sussex's clash with Durham, which begins on 23 June. Archer has featured regularly in England's white-ball sides over the last few years having made an eye-catching start to life in international cricket in the World Cup win and Ashes series in 2019. His possible return would come as a significant boost for England with their seam stocks hit by a hamstring injury to Gus Atkinson, who is expected to miss the first two Tests against India. "Jof's trucking along really well actually," said Luke Wright, the England selector and a former Sussex teammate of Archer's. "The plan is for him to play a few second team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test. So he'll play for Sussex if all things go well, and then if all things go well fingers crossed he should be available for the second Test. "Like anything with all these bowlers, he's got to keep ticking things off everyday with no setbacks but if all goes well and he gets through that Durham game then he's available potentially for selection for that second Test.' Mark Wood and Olly Stone look likely to miss the entirety of the series after their own injury issues, resulting in a recall for Jamie Overton after three years out of the Test set-up. Chris Woakes, who is working his way back to full fitness, and Brydon Carse also return to a 14-man squad with Sam Cook and Josh Tongue retained after the win over Zimbabwe. England face a big call at No 3 for the first Test with Jacob Bethell back available. The left-hander batted with aplomb having earned a surprise promotion to the position on the tour of New Zealand late last year but all of England's incumbents, including Ollie Pope, made runs at Trent Bridge in the opening Test of the summer. Wright admitted that Bethell, who made a fine 81 in the first one-day international against the West Indies, was pushing for selection though no final decision had yet been made. 'He's very close to [making the side], it's a great option to have, isn't it?' Wright conceded. 'What a talent we all see in him. When we get up to Leeds we'll have good discussions and look to announce it a few days out from the Test.' England squad for first Test against India at Headingley (20-24 June) Ben Stokes (Durham) – Captain Shoaib Bashir (Somerset) Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire) Harry Brook (Yorkshire) Brydon Carse (Durham) Sam Cook (Essex) Zak Crawley (Kent) Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire) Jamie Overton (Surrey) Ollie Pope (Surrey) Joe Root (Yorkshire) Jamie Smith (Surrey) Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire) Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

Jamie Overton returns to England Test squad for time in three years
Jamie Overton has returned to England's Test squad for the first time in three years for the series opener against India as Jacob Bethell, Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse also return. Overton has been a regular in the white-ball set-up in recent times but won his solitary Test cap against New Zealand in 2022, taking two wickets and hitting an unexpected 97 with the bat. It remains to be seen whether the all-rounder will be fully fit to take the field at Headingley on June 20, having broken the little finger on his right hand during the recent ODIs against West Indies, but he has been given every chance to prove his fitness. The England and Wales Cricket Board has said the 31-year-old will be 'assessed and reviewed daily' by its medical team, who have already ruled Overton's Surrey team-mate Gus Atkinson out of the match. Atkinson tweaked his hamstring in the recent Test against Zimbabwe and has not been passed fit for the trip to Leeds. In his absence, England have further bolstered their pace bowling stocks with comebacks for fit-again pair Woakes and Carse. Both men missed the early part of the season with injury problems of their own, ruling them out of the opening Test of the summer. Woakes, who faces the tourists with England Lions in Northampton over the next four days, could edge out Sam Cook, who retains his place after a quiet debut against Zimbabwe. Carse, meanwhile, is in line for his first home cap after impressing over the winter in Pakistan and New Zealand. A thornier selection dilemma concerns Bethell, the 21-year-old rising star who is back from IPL duty and placing pressure on the top three. Bethell confirmed his status as an outstanding prospect with a highly-accomplished series against the West Indies and has already shown an aptitude for the cut and thrust of the Test arena on the New Zealand tour. Vice-captain Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley were both thought to be under pressure from his reintroduction but the pair reeled off matching hundreds against Zimbabwe and received glowing praise from skipper Ben Stokes in the aftermath. Stokes had earlier been equally effusive about Bethell but clarified that his endorsement only guaranteed a return to the squad, not the side. That is a decision that must now be taken as England ponder how to balance their options against an India side in a renewal phase following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. England squad for first Test against India: B Stokes (c), S Bashir, J Bethell, H Brook, B Carse, S Cook, Z Crawley, B Duckett, J Overton, O Pope, J Root, J Smith (wkt), J Tongue, C Woakes.

Jamie Overton is shock name in England squad to face India
England have sprung a selection surprise by calling Jamie Overton into their squad for the first Test against India, after their fast-bowling injury woes deepened with Gus Atkinson's absence. Overton has just one Test cap, three years ago against New Zealand, and has played just three Championship matches in the last two seasons as his white-ball career took centre stage. Overton is a regular in England's limited-overs set-up, but picked up a finger injury in the opening game of the ongoing West Indies series. After England beat Zimbabwe last month, Overton is one of four new faces in the 14-man squad for the first of five India Tests, which begins on June 20 at Headingley. Also returning are Jacob Bethell, Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse, while the unused Matthew Potts and James Rew drop out, as well as Atkinson, who has a hamstring injury. Sam Cook is retained at Potts's expense, despite a mixed debut in which he took one for 119. Bethell will compete with Ollie Pope for the much-discussed No 3 position. Bethell impressed when batting in that position in New Zealand last year when Pope was deputising for Jamie Smith as wicketkeeper. With Bethell at the Indian Premier League, Pope returned to No 3 against Zimbabwe and promptly followed both openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in making an excellent hundred. Pope was strongly backed by captain Ben Stokes after that match, but Bethell has impressed with the white-ball squad and remains in the selection shake-up. Woakes and Josh Tongue will play for England Lions this weekend as they build up their workloads ahead of the Test. That pair, alongside Carse, make up the likely attack, although Overton could come into the picture on the ground where he made his debut two years ago, taking two wickets and scoring 97 with the bat. England have been keen to build a battery of quicks and, being tall and pacy, he fits the bill. Summer is here 🔆🏏 — Ben Stokes (@Benstokes39) June 1, 2025 Stokes considered playing for the Lions, but has chosen to work on his fitness in training after an impressive return against Zimbabwe. Atkinson joins a long injury list. Already missing are Mark Wood and Olly Stone, while England hope that Jofra Archer could return to Test cricket for the first time since March 2021 in the second or third match of the series. He currently has a minor hand injury, but would need at least one Championship match with Sussex to prove his fitness. Woakes and Carse have only recently returned from injury, while England say Overton's finger problem will be assessed 'daily'.
