Sri Lanka's Mathews to retire from Test cricket
Former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews will retire from Test cricket in June. The 37-year-old, who made his debut in 2009, will make his final appearance in the first Test against Bangladesh, which starts on 17 June in Galle.He will remain available for Sri Lanka's white-ball teams, although he has not featured in a limited-overs international since last June.Mathews will retire as Sri Lanka's third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket, with 8,167 runs at 44.62 from his 118 matches to date. Only Kumar Sangakkara (12,400 runs) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814 runs) lie ahead of him.He has also taken 33 Test wickets as a bowler.Mathews captained Sri Lanka in 34 Tests between 2013 and 2017, including overseeing a memorable series win against England in 2014. He scored a second-innings 160 in a decisive 100-run victory at Headingley.In a social media post, Mathews said: "The past 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka has been my highest honour and pride."I have given everything to cricket and cricket has given me everything in return and made me the person I am today."While I bid adieu to the Test format, as discussed with selectors I will remain available for selection for the white-ball format, if and when my country needs me."

"Like anything with all these bowlers, he's got to keep ticking things off everyday with no setbacks but if all goes well and he gets through that Durham game then he's available potentially for selection for that second Test.' Mark Wood and Olly Stone look likely to miss the entirety of the series after their own injury issues, resulting in a recall for Jamie Overton after three years out of the Test set-up. Chris Woakes, who is working his way back to full fitness, and Brydon Carse also return to a 14-man squad with Sam Cook and Josh Tongue retained after the win over Zimbabwe. England face a big call at No 3 for the first Test with Jacob Bethell back available. The left-hander batted with aplomb having earned a surprise promotion to the position on the tour of New Zealand late last year but all of England's incumbents, including Ollie Pope, made runs at Trent Bridge in the opening Test of the summer. Wright admitted that Bethell, who made a fine 81 in the first one-day international against the West Indies, was pushing for selection though no final decision had yet been made. 'He's very close to [making the side], it's a great option to have, isn't it?' Wright conceded. 'What a talent we all see in him. When we get up to Leeds we'll have good discussions and look to announce it a few days out from the Test.' Jamie Overton returns to England Test squad for time in three years
Jamie Overton has returned to England's Test squad for the first time in three years for the series opener against India as Jacob Bethell, Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse also return. Overton has been a regular in the white-ball set-up in recent times but won his solitary Test cap against New Zealand in 2022, taking two wickets and hitting an unexpected 97 with the bat. It remains to be seen whether the all-rounder will be fully fit to take the field at Headingley on June 20, having broken the little finger on his right hand during the recent ODIs against West Indies, but he has been given every chance to prove his fitness. The England and Wales Cricket Board has said the 31-year-old will be 'assessed and reviewed daily' by its medical team, who have already ruled Overton's Surrey team-mate Gus Atkinson out of the match. Vice-captain Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley were both thought to be under pressure from his reintroduction but the pair reeled off matching hundreds against Zimbabwe and received glowing praise from skipper Ben Stokes in the aftermath. Stokes had earlier been equally effusive about Bethell but clarified that his endorsement only guaranteed a return to the squad, not the side. That is a decision that must now be taken as England ponder how to balance their options against an India side in a renewal phase following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Jamie Overton is shock name in England squad to face India
England have sprung a selection surprise by calling Jamie Overton into their squad for the first Test against India, after their fast-bowling injury woes deepened with Gus Atkinson's absence. Overton has just one Test cap, three years ago against New Zealand, and has played just three Championship matches in the last two seasons as his white-ball career took centre stage. Overton is a regular in England's limited-overs set-up, but picked up a finger injury in the opening game of the ongoing West Indies series. After England beat Zimbabwe last month, Overton is one of four new faces in the 14-man squad for the first of five India Tests, which begins on June 20 at Headingley. Also returning are Jacob Bethell, Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse, while the unused Matthew Potts and James Rew drop out, as well as Atkinson, who has a hamstring injury. Sam Cook is retained at Potts's expense, despite a mixed debut in which he took one for 119. Bethell will compete with Ollie Pope for the much-discussed No 3 position. That pair, alongside Carse, make up the likely attack, although Overton could come into the picture on the ground where he made his debut two years ago, taking two wickets and scoring 97 with the bat.
