Bopanna-Pavlasek beat local favourites to enter third round

Paris, May 31 (UNI) India's Rohan Bopanna and Czech partner Adam Pavlasek showcased resilience and tactical prowess to edge past France's Fabien Reboul and Sadio Doumbia 6-2, 7-6(5) in a gripping second-round men's doubles encounter at the French Open on Court 14.
The Indo-Czech duo dominated the opening set, leveraging their powerful serves and strategic net play to secure a 6-2 lead. Bopanna's experience and Pavlasek's agility were evident as they broke the French pair's serve twice, capitalising on early opportunities.
However, the Frenchmen, buoyed by the home crowd, mounted a formidable comeback in the second set. Doumbia and Reboul tightened their service games and applied pressure on returns, leading to a closely contested set that culminated in a tiebreak.
Despite the momentum shift, Bopanna and Pavlasek maintained composure, clinching the tiebreak 7-5 and sealing the match in straight sets.
Statistically, the match was evenly poised. Bopanna and Pavlasek recorded 8 aces to the French duo's 5 and had a slightly higher first-serve win percentage at 72% compared to 68%.
Both teams converted three break points, but the Indo-Czech pair's ability to win crucial points, especially in the tiebreak, made the difference.
This victory marks a significant step for Bopanna and Pavlasek as they advance to the third round, continuing their quest for a maiden Grand Slam title together.

Virat Kohli's One8 Commune faces legal action

Bengaluru, Jun 2 (UNI) The Cubbon Park Police have registered a suo motu case against One8 Commune, a pub and restaurant co-owned by cricketer Virat Kohli, for alleged violations of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). The establishment has been booked under Sections 4 and 21 of the Act for failing to maintain a designated smoking area within its premises. This is not the first time the establishment has come under regulatory scrutiny. In July 2024, the same pub was found operating beyond the permissible hours during a routine night patrol. Police Sub-Inspector Ashok Thakur reported that the pub was still serving customers at 1:20 a.m., exceeding the city's 1 a.m. deadline for such establishments. Consequently, an FIR was filed against the pub's manager under Section 103 of the Karnataka Police Act. Additionally, in December 2024, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) issued a notice to One8 Commune over alleged fire safety violations. The civic body acted upon a complaint by a social activist, stating that the pub was operating without implementing mandated fire safety measures or obtaining a fire department clearance certificate. The BBMP had previously issued a notice on November 29, but the pub management failed to respond, prompting a seven-day deadline for compliance, failing which legal action would be initiated. One8 Commune's Bengaluru branch, located on the sixth floor of Ratnam's Complex on Kasturba Road near the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, was inaugurated in December 2023. The establishment is part of a chain with outlets in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and Kolkata. As of now, the management of One8 Commune has not issued any public statement regarding these violations. Investigations are ongoing, and further actions will depend on the outcomes of these probes. French Police Detain Fans During PSG Champions League Triumph Celebrations

Last Updated: French authorities detained 79 people during PSG's celebrations for winning the UEFA Champions League. French authorities detained 79 people in the second wave of arrests during celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) Champions League win, a police chief said on Monday. PSG defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in the final held in Munich on Saturday evening. The team returned to Paris on Sunday for a triumphant parade along the Champs-Élysées, followed by celebrations at a packed Parc des Princes stadium on the outskirts of the French capital. PSG's victory, their first in Europe's premier club football competition, triggered widespread celebrations in France, which were marred by violence. On Sunday, 'we saw a resurgence of individuals driven by malicious intent who were not really PSG supporters," Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told RTL radio. 'We arrested 79 people, some of them during the night," he said, adding that order had been restored before dawn. Those detained included individuals who removed barriers and briefly blocked the périphérique (Paris ring road), while others attempted to vandalise businesses or set off fireworks on the Champs-Élysées, he said. On Saturday night, police made over 500 arrests across France, according to the Interior Ministry, following incidents where more than 200 cars were torched and police clashed with youths. In the southwestern town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the chest. A 23-year-old man riding a scooter in central Paris also died after being hit by a vehicle. A policeman was placed in an induced coma after being injured by a firework. French President Emmanuel Macron, receiving the triumphant team at the Élysée Palace on Sunday, condemned the 'unacceptable" violence during the festivities. Many of the team's stars, who comprise one of the youngest squads in the competition, come from the vast football talent pool in the Parisian suburbs. This follows PSG's Qatari owners' shift away from signing star players like Neymar and Lionel Messi. A total of 11.5 million people tuned in across France to watch the match.
