Reece James thought marathon match would never finish after two-hour delay

Daily Mirrora day ago

Chelsea eventually booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup after finding a route past Portuguese giants Benfica following a huge delay in the USA
Reece James admitted he feared Chelsea 's marathon Club World Cup tie would never finish. Chelsea's last 16 clash with Benfica turned into a complete farce when it was delayed for nearly TWO HOURS because of lightning storms and a severe weather warning and eventually took four hours and 38 minutes to complete after kick-off.
James said: 'It was in the back of my mind that there was a chance that the game was not going to get completed. It was quite disruptive. We're happy, you know, we are into the next round and the game is completed.

'We got to 85 minutes and then had to sit on wait for, I don't know, a period. It was difficult, the climate was very hot and humid.'

It is the sixth game in the Club World Cup which has been delayed by the weather and the third time a game has been delayed by over an hour.
Strict US rules mean if there is lightning within a five mile radius then the game is delayed by 30 minutes for safety reasons - and the time delay is then reset every time a bolt is spotted.
It is highly likely FIFA will review those protocols before the international World Cup next summer as the climate in the United States has been challenging.
Chelsea actually produced their best performance of the tournament against Benfica and James opened the scoring with a 64th minute free kick and they were heading for victory.
Incredibly, Chelsea were just six minutes from victory when their players were ordered off the pitch as they had to take cover in the dressing room while the fans were also evacuated from the stands for one hour and 53 minutes until the game restarted.
But then when the match eventually restarted, Benfica snatched a dramatic 95th minute equaliser when Angel Di Maria scored from the spot after a highly controversial penalty was given against Malo Gusto.

Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni was sent off for a second yellow card in extra time and then Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored in extra time to finally settle a madcap, unforgettable game.

Now Chelsea must play Palmeiras in the quarter finals on Friday and Philadelphia and if Manchester City win their game with Al-Hilal in Orlando on Monday then they are on course for a semi final showdown in New York if they both progress.
The chance of an all English showdown 3,500 miles from home in New York would be an American dream and a red hot ticket for FIFA. But FIFA must overcome big problems in the Club World Cup to make this tournament a big success and also next year's international World Cup - starting with the weather.
They cannot change nature but they can think about where games are played and if you can reduce the safety protocols to stop such big delays. Chelsea now face Palmeiras in the next round and the celebrations at the end against Benfica showed how much this meant.

James added: 'We're in a stage of a tournament where you win, you carry on, you lose, you go home. It's knockout football. We got so close in 90 minutes and we felt short. And yeah, we managed to do it in extra time.
'You don't make up the favourites, we're the players. You know, we try and start well against whoever we're playing. It's going to be another tough game. Palmeiras has got amazing players and they're a good side. We're going to set out to win.'

Sporting director responds to claims Chelsea have agreed deal for £55m star

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl says Jamie Gittens has been given permission to speak with Chelsea, but a deal has not yet been agreed for the winger. Chelsea have set out their stall in the first few weeks of the summer transfer window, bringing in Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo and Liam Delap for a combined fee of around £72million. But determined to make up ground on their Premier League rivals, the Blues are working behind the scenes to further strengthen other areas of Enzo Maresca's squad. Joao Pedro is expected sign on the dotted line at Stamford Bridge over the coming days after the Europa Conference League winners saw off competition from Newcastle to wrap up an agreement in the region of £50m for the Brighton forward. Chelsea have also been in discussions to sign Dortmund attacker Gittens and widespread reports over the weekend suggested the west London giants had finally made a breakthrough in their pursuit of the 20-year-old following two unsuccessful bids. It was claimed Gittens was set to undergo a medical with Chelsea before putting pen to paper on a seven-year contract with the Premier League outfit. Quizzed on rumours that Chelsea had struck a £55m deal for Gittens, BVB chief Kehl told Sky Deutschland: 'We have given Jamie permission to hold talks with another club, which are still ongoing. 'There are still things to be clarified. Things are moving, but no decision has been made yet. 'We were aware that the player has a higher market value than what was on the table two weeks ago. 'We've exuded confidence. In the final analysis, we'll see if we receive adequate compensation.' More Trending Gittens is understood to have agreed personal terms with Chelsea before Dortmund's Club World Cup campaign got underway and the youngster has been eager to finalise a switch to Stamford Bridge as quickly as possible. The England Under-21 international is tied into a contract with Dortmund until June 2028. Across his four seasons at the Westfalenstadion, Gittens has racked up 17 goals and 14 assists in 107 appearances for BVB's first-team. The closest Gittens has come to winning a major trophy at club level came at the end of the 2023/24 campaign when Dortmund suffered defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final. Jair Tavares has left Hibs after the player and club came to an agreement to terminate his contract 12 months early. Tavares joined Hibs on a four-year deal in the summer of 2022 from Benfica, but he has failed to make a significant impact during his three seasons at Easter Road. The Portuguese winger spent the last campaign on loan at Motherwell and did not feature in Hibs head coach David Gray's plans going forward. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A statement on the Hibs website read: 'We can confirm that midfielder Jair Tavares has left Hibernian FC by mutual consent. The 24-year-old has agreed a deal with the club and departs with the very best wishes of everyone at Hibernian FC. Jair Tavares' three-year spell at Hibs has come to an end. | SNS Group 'The Portuguese winger joined Hibs in the summer of 2022 and went on to make 41 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals. The majority of Tavares' appearances came during the 2023/24 campaign, with him spending last season on loan at fellow William Hill Premiership side Motherwell.' Gray added: 'Jair hasn't had as much game-time as he'd have liked over the last few seasons, so it makes sense for both parties to come to this agreement. At 24, he still has the opportunity to develop, and we wish him nothing but the best with the next steps in his career.' Hibs ramp up their transfer activity Tavares' exit will free up both space and wages in Gray's squad as he looks to shape his group for the 2025/26 season. His departure comes just days after midfielder Nathan Moriah-Welsh joined Mansfield Town on a permanent transfer. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs have been active already in the transfer window, adding goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger, defensive midfielder Josh Mulligan and playmaker Jamie McGrath to their ranks. Key defender Rocky Bushiri also agreed a new contract last week, committing to the Easter Road cause for a further three years. Hibs want to bring back Nectarios Triantis to the club for next season. | SNS Group Hibs are currently in the Netherlands on a week-long training camp, where they will face MSV Duisburg and Ajax in friendlies. Their first competitive match is on Thursday, July 24 when they take on Danish side FC Midtyjlland in the Europa League second qualifying round. Whether Gray will have any further reinforcements for that match remains to be seen. Hibs remain very keen to land midfielder Nectarios Triantis from Sunderland after the Australian put in some impressive performances on loan last season. Talks between the two clubs, the player and his representatives have been ongoing for several weeks. Sunderland won promotion to the English Premier League at the end of last season via the play-offs and major developments over the weekend at the Stadium of Light could help Hibs' push for Triantis. The Black Cats are expected to confirm the arrival of Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra later today for a deal in excess of £30 million, pushing Triantis further down the pecking order on Wearside.
