Indian Railways uses AI to block fake IDs, make ticket booking easier

India Today05-06-2025

In an exclusive interview, Mr. Sudeesh, General Manager of IRCTC's IT Department, explained how misinformation (AI) and bot detection technology are used to prevent illegal booking of tickets for train journeys with Indian Railways by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).In earlier times, ticket fraud was a major issue. Fake user IDs were being used to open up to 25 Annabel booking windows at a time for a train journey. This blocked actual users from booking tickets for that train. But now, based on the AI that Indian Railway has deployed, IRCTC has blocked fake accounts, which eliminates the problem and has made it easier and fair for everyone to book.advertisement"This is not only a measure to help genuine passengers but also improves the capacity IRCTC has to improve ticket sales in the future," explained Mr. Sudeesh. He emphasised that the new system creates equitable access for all passengers while at the same time ensuring transparency.
Ending fake IDs and automatic bookings, IRCTC has made improvements to the user experience and prevented overloading its booking system. This is a win for the average individual when making online bookings for train tickets. To ensure fair access to railway tickets, IRCTC has blocked 3.5 crore fake user IDs in the past year. These IDs were mostly created by unauthorised agents using disposable emails and bots to make multiple booking attempts at once. This practice overloaded the system and reduced the chances for genuine users. With the help of AI and bot detection technology, IRCTC has reduced fake account creation from 65,000 to just 12,000 a day, making the booking system smoother and more transparent for all passengers.
