The joy, the grief and the grind: A day in New Orleans
Thursday was a reminder to me of what it means to live in New Orleans: the highs, the lows and the daily grind.
Why it matters: It's not easy living here, but there are many reasons we call it home.
The big picture: I kicked off the morning at City Hall as Councilman Freddie King III declared it Cam Jordan Day.
The festivities captured the joy we know and love, with music, dancing, costumes and high-fiving.
Even Saints owner Gayle Benson got in on the fun, cracking a joke about Jordan's stellar stats against the Falcons.
Yes, but: Benson then rushed over in her red-soled Louboutins to Gallier Hall where the New Orleans Police Department was honoring officers who responded to the New Year's Day terrorist attack.
Talk about a vibe shift.
The award ceremony was solemn as Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick talked about the mental health toll on the responding officers.
The a cappela version of " My Tribute (How Can I Say Thanks)" brought me and others to tears. Same for my conversation with the grandmother of one of the officers who was first on the scene.
Then, it was time to pull myself together and head back to City Hall for a council meeting, where members were elevating concerns they heard from constituents.
The meeting wrapped in time for me to head over to Civil Court, where they were recounting the ballots for Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office millage, which passed by two votes.
My takeaway: We all have value. Whether we are leading the Saints to victory or taking down a gunman or casting a vote, we each have a role in this community.
I'm glad we are able to recognize our hardships, find our joy and then get back to handling our business.

Countdown to Kickoff: John Ridgeway III is the Saints Player of Day 95 Ridgeway is part of a crowded competition on the Saints defensive line There are now 95 days until the New Orleans Saints open their 2025 regular season against the Arizona Cardinals on September 7. Defensive tackle John Ridgeway currently wears No. 95 for New Orleans. He's in his second year with the team but is the seventh player since 2018 to wear the number. Let's have a closer look at Ridgeway, our Saints Player of the Day. At Bloomington High School in Illinois, Ridgeway was an all-state performer in both football and wrestling as well as a star in the shot put and discus. From there, he'd initially attend Illinois State and starred for three years. Ridgeway was a 1st Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection in 2020. After that season, he'd transfer to Arkansas. In his only year with the Razorbacks, Ridgeway had 2 sacks and 4 tackles for loss among his 39 total stops. The Dallas Cowboys selected Ridgeway in Round 5 of the 2022 NFL Draft. Dallas released him one week into the regular season, when Washington swooped him to sign him off waivers. Ridgeway would appear in 32 games for Washington over the next two seasons, starting six contests and playing 31% of the defensive snaps. He'd have a total of 55 tackles, with none for negative yardage and no sacks but one forced fumble. During training camp last year, the Saints acquired Ridgeway in a trade. New Orleans dealt a sixth round choice in the 2025 draft in exchange for Ridgeway and a Round 7 pick in this year's draft. Ultimately, Washington would deal that Round 6 pick back to New Orleans as part of last year's trade for Marshon Lattimore. Also included in that trade was New Orleans trading a fifth round pick to Washington and receiving Washington's Round 3 and Round 4 choices back in return. With those draft picks, the Saints chose Virginia safety Jonas Sanker in the third round, Louisville cornerback Quincy Riley in the fourth. Ridgeway played in 13 games for the Saints last season, but only appeared in 28% of the defensive snaps. He managed 15 total tackles, including his first career tackle for negative yardage. In 2025, he'll face stiff competition for a roster spot. New defensive coordinator Brandon Staley is likely going to switch from a 4-3 to a base 3-4 system, leaving fewer spots up for grabs. Along with Ridgeway, the Saints also return Bryan Bresee, Nathan Shepherd, Khalen Saunders, and Khristian Boyd at defensive tackle. Additionally, New Orleans traded for nose tackle Davon Godchaux and used a Round 3 draft choice on Texas Longhorns defensive tackle Vernon Broughton. John Ridgeway III will have his work cut out for him to wear No. 95 for a second consecutive season in New Orleans.

ESPN lays out four potential trade scenarios for Falcons QB Kirk Cousins
The Atlanta Falcons may have the best backup quarterback in the league on their bench. Veteran Kirk Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million contract last offseason but was benched for rookie Michael Penix Jr. in Week 16. Since the Falcons are giving Penix the keys to the offense, trading Cousins would be best for all parties involved. Now that the June 1 deadline has passed, Atlanta could move Cousins without devastating financial ramifications. The question is whether or not another team would actually pay the veteran quarterback's $27.5 million salary for the 2025 season. Advertisement ESPN's Dan Graziano, Jeremy Fowler, Ben Solak and Seth Walder pitched hypothetical trade scenarios for the Falcons to move Cousins. Let's take a look at all four theoretical trades below. Trade 1 (Fowler): Falcons-Browns Fowler's trade has the Falcons sending Cousins and a seventh-round pick to Cleveland in exchange for quarterback Kenny Pickett and a sixth-round pick. Cleveland currently has Joe Flacco, rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders and Pickett competing for the QB1 spot with Deshaun Watson out (Achilles). The Falcons could strike a deal where they front $17.5 million of Cousins' guaranteed money for 2025, and Pickett would be Atlanta's new QB2. -- Jeremy Fowler Trade 2 (Graziano): Falcons-Vikings Graziano's proposed trade sends Cousins back to Minnesota in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick, a seventh-round selection in 2027 and cash considerations ($10 milllion). Well, it makes sense for all three sides, really, counting Cousins himself. He wants a chance to start and could use his no-trade clause to nix a deal to any place he doesn't want to go. But if he has to be a backup, we know he liked living in Minnesota and playing for the Vikings. -- Dan Graziano Trade 3 (Solak): Falcons-Steelers Ben Solak's trade proposal sends Cousins to the Steelers in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick and cash considerations. With Pittsburgh still waiting on Aaron Rodgers, Cousins may start to look like a more appealing, less dramatic option at quarterback. Cousins is a good fit for coordinator Arthur Smith's offense, which doesn't need its quarterback to move much out of the pocket. This late of a draft pick is close to Cousins' value, and I'd imagine the Falcons are still willing to swallow $20 million -- maybe even more -- of his salary to get this deal done. -- Ben Solak Trade 4 (Walder): Falcons-Vikings In the second proposed trade with the Vikings, the Falcons would send Cousins to Minnesota for quarterback Sam Howell and cash considerations. Howell was acquired by the Vikings during the 2025 NFL draft in a trade with the Seahawks. The key to the compensation for a Cousins deal is how much of his guaranteed money the acquiring team will take on. I'll raise Dan's offer and say the Vikings pay $12 million of it. This would allow Atlanta to save a little face and get out of the situation with a different backup quarterback. -- Seth Walder Advertisement All four offers have upside, and it makes sense that Atlanta would seek a backup-caliber quarterback to replace Cousins. The team signed Easton Stick in free agency, but he has limited starting experience. If the Falcons could land Pickett or Howell, while shedding Cousins and some cash, it would be a major win for the team. Man pleads no contest to shooting Delano K-9
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man pleaded no contest Wednesday to nine charges filed in connection with an incident on New Year's Day 2022 in which he allegedly shot a Delano police dog then pointed the gun at officers. Eduardo Figueroa, 41, faces 20 years and eight months in prison at sentencing in August. He pleaded no contest to harming a police dog, six counts of assault with a gun on a peace officer, possession of a gun by a felon and recklessly evading police. The dog, Axel, survived. Bullet fragments were found near his right shoulder and along the shoulder and neck area near the spinal column. According to court filings, Figueroa led McFarland police on a chase through the city, speeding and running stop signs, before stopping at East Sherwood Avenue and San Lucas Street. He refused to leave the car. A K-9 was requested from Delano police. Axel was released and 'apprehended Figueroa through the open driver's side door,' the filings say. Figueroa fired at least twice, the filings say. Then seven officers opened fire, wounding him. He dropped the gun and was taken to Kern Medical, where he recovered. He was booked into jail once medically cleared. Figueroa told a sheriff's investigator he shot the dog to avoid getting bit, then pointed the gun at officers.
