Doha Film Institute extends submission date for 2025 Feature Script Lab
The lab, which accepts only eight participants, is geared toward intermediate to advanced filmmakers. The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has announced an extended application window for its 2025 Feature Script Lab. Now, applications must be submitted by June 1, 2025. This six-month programme is designed to support emerging screenwriters and writer-directors working on original feature-length screenplays through intensive mentorship, peer collaboration, and structured script development. The lab is delivered across three five-day online sessions scheduled for July 10–15, September 25–30, and December 10–15, 2025. Participants will engage in both group discussions and one-on-one tutorials with seasoned mentors, receiving detailed feedback on character arcs, story structure, and thematic clarity. The lab fosters a collaborative environment where participants are expected to engage deeply with peers' work, meet rigorous deadlines, and complete assignments leading toward a fully developed screenplay. Selection for the programme is based on the strength of a candidate's screenplay idea, writing skill, and artistic vision, along with a review of previous creative work. Shortlisted applicants will undergo a selection process assessing their potential to develop a personal and impactful story. The lab emphasises projects that reflect contemporary Middle Eastern life and encourages participants to consider various budget scales, including micro-budget filmmaking. The programme begins with pitching and feedback in Session 1, followed by scene-by-scene breakdowns, character and theme development, and ongoing script revisions. Session 2 advances the projects through new drafts, visual research, and pitch refinement. Session 3 concludes with a comprehensive review of first drafts, a final group feedback session, and a pitch presentation to an external panel. Participants must attend all three sessions in full, with each day dedicated to intensive development work. The lab will be conducted in English, accommodates eight participants, and is intended for intermediate to advanced-level filmmakers. The total lab fee is 1,800 Qatari Riyals. Required materials include a synopsis, treatment, script samples (if available), resume, visual materials and a personal statement. Priority is given to applicants from Qatar, the MENA region, the diaspora, and DFI grantees, though filmmakers from emerging regions are also encouraged to apply.

Trump arrives in Doha to a grand welcome, Qatar signs $200b deal to buy jets from Boeing
President Donald Trump arrived on Wednesday in Qatar, where he was greeted by the country's emir, Sheikh Tamim Al Thani, as he kicked off the second leg of his three-nation Middle East tour this week. Trump's dealmaking in Qatar comes amid controversy over the country's gift - which Trump said he'd accept - of a luxury Boeing 747-8 that the US could use as Air Force One. On his flight from Saudi Arabia, Air Force One was escorted by Qatari F-15 jets, according to a post on X by White House official Margo Martin. It was a repeat of Tuesday's escort by Saudi Arabian fighter jets, which was a high-profile move without recent precedent. Trump was greeted at the airport by Qatar's emir Sheikh Tamim Al Thani. Both leaders then walked down a receiving line of representatives from each country at the Amiri Diwan, the government palace. The ceremonial greeting also included an escort of riders on camelback. While Al Thani shook hands with US officials, he had a warmer greeting for Steve Witkoff, Trump's envoy who has played a key role in Middle East negotiations. They clasped hands and pulled each other in for an embrace. Trump then sat down briefly with Al Thani and marveled at the government palace. Qatar signed a deal on Wednesday to purchase jets from US manufacturer Boeing for Qatar Airways during Trump's visit to the Gulf Arab country. Trump said the deal was worth $200 billion and included 160 jets. Trump and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim witnessed the signing ceremony in Doha. The deal was announced during Trump's second stop on a tour of Gulf states after he struck a string of deals with Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. Trump said Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg told him at the signing ceremony that "it's the largest order of jets in the history of Boeing, that's good." Trump added: "It's over $200 billion but 160 in terms of the jets, that's fantastic. So that's a record, Kelly, and congratulations to Boeing. Get those planes out there, get them out there." Trump touts camels and largest Boeing order in history during Qatar visit
US President Donald Trump continued his blitz of Gulf deals in Qatar on Wednesday, telling the American jet maker Boeing to 'get those planes out there' after unveiling what he said was the American company's biggest deal in history. Trump said Qatar had agreed to order up to 210 American-made Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 777x aircraft in a $96bn deal. 'Congratulations to Boeing. Get those planes out there,' Trump said at a ceremony alongside Qatar's ruler, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. 'I just want to thank you,' he added. The Qatari purchase throws a lifeline to Boeing. The iconic US aeroplane maker has been hammered by crisis after crisis. Most recently, in 2024, a Boeing jet lost a rear door in mid-flight. A Boeing jet owned by a Korean airline also crashed the same year. The accidents and concerns about quality control at Boeing's factories have battered the company's share price. Trump's visit to Qatar marks the second leg in his three-state tour of the Arabian Gulf. Trump seals deals and slams western 'interventionists' in Saudi Arabia visit Read More » The White House said on Wednesday that Trump had secured $1.2 trillion in 'economic commitments' from Qatar, but qualified the announcement, saying the deals totalled more than $240bn, including the Boeing order. Aviation industry experts say that Qatar Airways is likely to negotiate a lower price per plane than is listed, given the sheer size of the order. Still, for Trump, the visit will mark a continuation of what he will look back on as a successful Arabian Gulf tour. Trump was vetted by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, who personally drove the US president around in a Golf cart. Qatar's ruling family also welcomed Trump in the glitzy style he prefers, with cavalry soldiers riding beside his Limousine. 'We appreciate those camels, I haven't seen camels like that in a long time,' Trump told Thani. More deals In Saudi Arabia, Trump's administration announced $600bn worth of deals, including $142bn in arms sales. Although many of the deals have been announced in the form of non-binding commitments, many are also likely to materialise. The shares of US chipmakers like Nvidia and AMD were soaring on Wednesday, thanks to a combination of deals announced with entities belonging to Saudi Arabia's public investment fund and a decision by Trump to undo Biden-era export controls that prevented Gulf states from buying advanced AI chips. The deals announced in Qatar skewed more towards aviation, defence and energy. Trump agreed to the $1bn sale of Raytheon's small unmanned aircraft integrated defeat system. General Atomics also secured a nearly $2bn agreement for Qatar's acquisition of the MQ-9B drones. Qatar is home to the world's largest natural gas field. Its status as a key supplier of liquefied natural gas soared after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The former Biden administration tried to put green energy at the forefront of its economic initiatives. Under Trump, the US has embraced traditional oil and gas investments. The White House noted that the partnership between US energy construction company McDermott and Qatar Energy was worth $8.5bn. 'As the sole provider of offshore components for Qatar's major LNG expansion, McDermott's work directly supports thousands of US energy sector jobs,' the statement said. In 2022, Qatar Airways signed a massive order with Boeing for a new freighter version of its 777x passenger jet and a provisional order for 737 Max jets. Trump courted controversy ahead of his visit to the Gulf by saying he planned to accept a 747 Boeing Jet from Qatar for use as Air Force One and that he would keep the jet after he left the White House, placing it in his presidential library.
