Pride continues to crumble

Pride continues to crumble

Spectatora day ago

In the canteen of the House of Lords last week, a friendly server asked me if I'd like some 'Pride pudding'. This turned out to be a rainbow-coloured crumble created in honour of Pride month. 'Er, no thanks,' I said, and then noticed a large 'Progress Pride' flag behind the counter. Oh dear, I thought. That'll set the cat among the pigeons.
Sure enough, a couple of hours later the GC Cons Peers' WhatsApp group erupted. This is made up of those dinosaurs who style themselves 'gender critical' – i.e. they believe sex is biological, binary and immutable. For the uninitiated, the Progress Pride flag features a large, multicoloured chevron superimposed on the standard rainbow layout. The colours correspond to different groups that don't feel adequately represented by the common or garden Pride flag, and include the colours of the trans flag. (Yes, there's one of those, too.) Among the embattled armies facing off on the red benches, this flag is the banner of those who believe that trans women are women and should be granted unfettered access to women's spaces.
That's long been an issue of heated debate in the Lords, but it's reached fever pitch following the recent Supreme Court ruling. We GC Cons naively thought this would settle the matter in our favour, but naturally the same progressives who during the Brexit wars condemned those who questioned the wisdom of the Supreme Court justices as rabble-rousing populists are now quick to condemn them as 'bigots' and 'transphobes'.
Scarcely a week passes without the two sides locking horns over the judgment, with the LGBTQQIP2SAA Lab Peers arguing that it's meaningless until the Equality and Human Rights Commission has issued official 'guidance' about how to interpret it. Baroness Falkner, the EHRC's chair, is sympathetic to the GC cause, but she's due to step down in November and our opponents' plan is to delay the 'guidance' until they've managed to install a stooge in her place. Meanwhile, they're not about to lower their banner.
So for the Progress Pride flag to be planted in the Lords' canteen was, for the GC Cons, a major defeat. The common parts of the House are supposed to be neutral ground. And, of course, another tactic of the pink-haired radicals (even some nonagenarian Labour baronesses have pink hair) is to present their highly contentious views on gender as politically settled, like climate change. In other words, this was a double blow – they'd parked their tanks in the demilitarised zone and succeeded in disguising them as electrically-powered UN peacekeeping vehicles. This could not stand!
A tactic of the pink-haired radicals is to present their highly contentious views on gender as politically settled
Several GC Cons immediately fired off letters to the Lords' bewigged officials. The doughty Baroness Nicholson was first over the top, quickly followed by Baroness Jenkin – the Boadicea of our tribe – and yours truly. My argument was that under the Equality Act the Lords has an obligation to foster good relations between those who have a particular protected characteristic and those who don't. Believing that sex is real is a protected belief and allowing the banner of those who think sex is 'assigned at birth' to fly in the canteen is hardly fostering good relations.
No doubt the same peers who've rejected the Supreme Court ruling would dispute this interpretation of the Act and refer the matter to the EHRC, with judgment delayed until Falkner has gone. But, amazingly, the powers that be appear to have been convinced – not just by my letter, I'm sure – and over the weekend the flag was removed. Pride pudding is still on sale, but that's fine; it was the flying of the trans colours that was the issue, not the celebration of Pride Month.
I even said in my letter that I had no problem with the Pride flag, which isn't strictly true. I'd prefer it if public institutions remained impartial when it comes to all political battles, even those the progressive left can justifiably claim to have won. No objection to gay rights obviously, but the Pride flag has come to mean much more than that and I find its ubiquitous presence in June oppressive, as if you're being ordered what to think about a whole cluster of issues. But one battle at a time and for now I'll take the win.
In late breaking news, Labour has announced its preferred candidate to succeed Baroness Falkner – Mary-Ann Stephenson – and stone me if she isn't a bit GC herself. Was that a cock-up? I suspect not. My impression is that Sir Keir and his cronies recognise that prolonging this battle is a vote-loser, just as it was for the Democrats in the US election. The GC Cons may think we've succeeded in forcing the trans zealots to lower the Progress Pride flag. But in reality it's Labour that has abandoned this fight.

Gibraltar agrees 15% sales tax on goods in post-Brexit settlement with Spain

Gibraltar will apply a 15% sales tax on goods to avoid unfair competition with Spain, as a result of the agreement on the post-Brexit future of the British overseas territory, it has emerged. The territory has agreed to ensure a 15% minimum 'transaction tax' on goods within three years of the ratification of the agreement, according to a senior European official. 'For Gibraltar, it was a big ask, they have always claimed … that this taxation will create for them a serious economic problem,' the official said. The European Commission insisted that the British territory had to align its taxation policies with the EU in order to join a customs union, an integral part of the deal struck on Wednesday. 'The agreement that we have reached is that they will, in a period of three years, reach a level [on a transaction tax] that is acceptable for us,' the person said. The agreement, hailed as 'historic', will erase the border separating the British overseas territory from the rest of the Iberian peninsula. Gibraltar will be connected to the EU's border-free Schengen zone, meaning Gibraltarians can move freely in the surrounding region, although without rights to work and settle elsewhere in the EU. Passport checks will be carried out at the port and airport by British and Spanish border guards. Spanish officers will be empowered to deny entry to the British overseas territory to any British national who has already exceeded their 90-day stay limit. Under Schengen rules, UK citizens are limited to stays of 90 days within a 180-day period. Spanish customs officials will also check goods entering Gibraltar via the land border, the main entry point for nearly all items. The British overseas territory will eventually enter into a customs union with the EU, which requires a further agreement. Spain's foreign minister, José Manuel Albares, has welcomed 'the tax convergence process that will ensure that everybody is treated fairly'. He said: 'Now Gibraltar is linked to the customs union. There will be fair competition for everybody. Madrid has long been concerned that cigarettes from Gibraltar were being illegally sold in Spain, while European anti-fraud investigators have warned about cross-border smuggling by organised crime. The government of Gibraltar, which is responsible for setting taxation on the British overseas territory, has been contacted for comment. The Gibraltar agreement came weeks after the UK and EU agreed on a wider reset. EU sources said completing the unfinished business of Brexit for Gibraltar was necessary to move forward in other areas, such as defence and a veterinary agreement. Spain has been blocking British participation in defence projects and could have proved an obstacle to future deals if the status of Gibraltar had not been agreed. 'Everyone wanted to find compromises, solutions, etc, and it was the right moment to do that,' the official said.

Trump team sends removal notices to more than half a million migrants allowed into the country under Biden program

The Department of Homeland Security started handing out termination notices to thousands of migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela this week after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a decision that allows the Trump administration to end a Biden-era humanitarian parole program. Notices reviewed by CNN warned the migrants that if they do not leave voluntarily, they could face enforcement measures including detention and removal, 'without an opportunity to make personal arrangements and return to your country in an orderly manner.' The humanitarian parole program, introduced by the Biden administration, granted eligible migrants permission to enter the United States on a two-year stay. Approximately 530,000 citizens from the four countries were allowed in under the program. The Trump administration has criticized the program, claiming that it allowed 'poorly vetted' migrants into the country. But the program does require applicants to pass background checks and secure a financial sponsor to ensure they would not become a public burden. Last month, the Supreme Court granted an emergency request by the administration to halt the program, paving the way for DHS to begin rescinding protections for those living in the US under the program's terms. In a statement released Wednesday, DHS confirmed it would be revoking the work authorizations of those enrolled in the program. 'The Biden Administration lied to America,' DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. 'They allowed more than half a million poorly vetted aliens from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela and their immediate family members to enter the United States through these disastrous parole programs; granted them opportunities to compete for American jobs and undercut American workers; forced career civil servants to promote the programs even when fraud was identified; and then blamed Republicans in Congress for the chaos that ensued and the crime that followed.' The Biden administration had promoted the program as a strategy to relieve pressure on the southern border, offering a legal and controlled pathway for migration from nations frequently represented in asylum claims. With the program now dismantled, immigrant advocacy groups and legal experts are bracing for a wave of legal challenges and humanitarian concerns surrounding those now facing removal. It comes as tensions around immigration are at an all-time high. In Los Angeles, in the city and Trump responded by deploying the military. Elsewhere, other anti-ICE demonstrations ignited across the country, with more planned for Saturday.

SNP are in desperate need of a leader with fire in their belly

We agreed that hopefully they would still win despite their completely stupid, pointless, campaign message. We have to ask why John Swinney put all his time and effort into arranging the truly ludicrous 'Stop Reform' event when, if he had all this time and energy, he should surely have been arranging a 'We Demand to Save Grangemouth' event to be followed by a citizens' assembly for independence. READ MORE: Mairi McAllan: I'm back and I want quick progress on housing emergency Perhaps, though, it simply tells us everything we need to know about his and his party's priorities these days? With the SNP completely failing the people in regards to independence despite promising it, is it any wonder everyone is fed up to the back teeth with the whole bloody lot of these parties north and south of the Border, who simply lie through their teeth come election time promising us the world and then deliver Sweet Fanny Adams? This is the real reason why Reform UK are making such gains, and woe betide any of the political parties of the status quo who for decades have let us all down so badly, and who ignore this at their peril. People have genuinely had enough of being completely trampled on, lied to and abused by both Tory parties, both red and blue, and the SNP, as we in this enormously resource-rich nation have to sit back and watch it being systematically destroyed. We should be even madder at the way we are being abused! READ MORE: SNP leadership challenge would not be a good idea, says John Swinney We simply have to ask if there is anyone with even a modicum of intellect in the SNP to advise John Swinney. Perhaps there is no-one to hit the 'avoid making a fool of the party' button and this is why the SNP since 2014 have missed one open goal after another when it comes to demanding independence for the people who voted them in for just this reason. John Swinney seems a decent enough guy, but he is never in a month of Sundays the leader needed to take this country to its rightful goal of independence. Unless the people in the SNP wake up and realise indy supporters are every bit as intelligent as they are, the SNP will almost certainly go down in history as the biggest political failures of all time. Just take a look at the chasm between Yes support and the SNP, who for the last four years or so have been an embarrassment to indy supporters and who seem to now have a built-in self-destruct button. READ MORE: John Swinney and Anas Sarwar clash over reports of SNP secret meeting For every decent thing they do, the SNP then come out with ideas that ruin any credibility they may have just earned with caring, damage-reducing policies to try protect people from Westminster's idiotic, ill-thought-out rulings. The SNP need to wake up, or the man who was very much the instigator in bringing us all the financial calamity and life-ruining Brexit – the wee ex-Tory, City spiv with his very own property empire who incredibly pretends he is 'anti-establishment' as he counts his millions, yes, Nigel Farage – may very well be the next prime minister. So let's hope we somehow miraculously find a leader with fire in their belly, who will not accept any rulings that damage our lives here in Scotland, who will not accept 'no' when it comes to independence and who has the vision and intellect to set the foundations in place for an independent Scotland with its own currency and proper land reforms. We badly need both of those things right now but have to sit back and watch the SNP elect one dud after another as leader when far more capable people are right under their noses. Iain K Dunoon
