South Korea holds a snap presidential election Tuesday
SEOUL, South Korea, June 2, (AP): After months of political turmoil, South Korea will elect a new president this week to succeed conservative Yoon Suk Yeol, who was ousted over his brief but shocking imposition of martial law. Surveys suggested liberal Lee Jae-myung is heavily favored to win Tuesday's snap election, riding on a wave of public disappointment of Yoon's martial law debacle in December.
The main conservative candidate, Kim Moon Soo, wants a come-from-behind victory, but observers say his refusal to directly criticize Yoon made it difficult for him to narrow the gap with Lee. The winner will be sworn in as president on Wednesday without the typical two-month transition period. The new leader faces the urgent tasks of trying to heal the deep domestic divide over Yoon's action as well as focusing on US President Donald Trump's America-first policy and North Korea's advancing nuclear program. Lee, who represents the main liberal Democratic Party, is the favorite to win the elections.
In three Gallup Korea surveys released last week, 46% to 49% of respondents picked Lee as their choice for next president, giving him a comfortable lead over Kim with 35% to 37%. Lee narrowly lost the 2022 election to Yoon, and spearheaded parliament's two votes to overturn Yoon's martial law decree and impeach him, before the Constitutional Court formally dismissed him in April.
Lee's outspoken criticism of South Korea's conservative establishment and calls to punish those involved in Yoon's martial law enactment have caused worries among his opponents that Lee's election would further polarize the country. Kim, a former labor minister under Yoon, has fought an uphill battle against Lee as his People Power Party struggles to restore public confidence. Kim's opposition to Yoon's impeachment and reluctance to explicitly criticize the disgraced leader drove him away from moderate voters, analysts say.
Four other politicians are running for the presidency, including Lee Jun-seok of the small conservative New Reform Party, who has categorically rejected Kim's request to field a unified candidate between them to prevent a split in conservative votes. The election has got ugly, with candidates levelling damaging statements, personal attacks and even sexually offensive language against each other without unveiling clear, long-term vision for South Korea.
During last week's televised debate, Lee Jae-myung labelled Kim as "Yoon Suk Yeol's avatar,' while Kim called Lee a "harbinger of monster politics and dictatorship.' Lee Jun-seok faced withering public criticism after he used graphic references to women's bodies to criticize Lee Jae-myung's son over his purported sexually explicit online slur targeting a female singer.

MILAN, June 3, (AP): The 5-0 rout by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final may have been Simone Inzaghi's final match in charge of Inter Milan. ALBANY, NY, June 3, (AP): New York Lt Gov Antonio Delgado announced Monday that he will challenge his boss, Gov. Kathy Hochul, in the governor's race next year, months after a feud between the two Democrats erupted into public view. In a short campaign video, Delgado sought to introduce himself to voters, highlighting his educational background and offering a broad preview of his platform, saying "what we need right here in New York is bold, decisive transformational leadership.' "Listen, the powerful and well-connected have their champions. I'm running for governor to be yours,' he said. Delgado has been hinting at a primary challenge against Hochul for months and earlier this year said he would he would not run for reelection alongside the governor, ramping up speculation about his future and leading Hochul's office to sideline him from the duties of his ceremonial post. For Hochul, who appointed Delgado after her previous lieutenant governor was indicted, the announcement comes as she is expected to face a tough reelection fight next year, with serious opponents lining up. US Rep Elise Stefanik, a Republican who is considering a run against Hochul, released a statement after Delgado's announcement that said, "Let's FIRE HOCHUL in 2026.' "Her own Lieutenant Governor that she hand picked is now primarying her which shows she has lost support not just from Republicans and Independents, but Democrat New Yorkers as well,' Stefanik said. Delgado and Hochul have long been at odds. Discord between the two leaders became apparent last year ahead the presidential election when the lieutenant governor called on former president Joe Biden to drop his reelection bid, while Hochul was one of Biden's biggest supporters and surrogates . After the election, Delgado wrote an op-ed for The New York Times that argued Democrats are "ready for the next generation,' arguing that the party won't succeed "with the same politicians telling the same old stories.' In another break with Hochul, Delgado had called for New York City Mayor Eric Adams to resign as the mayor was battling his now-dismissed corruption case, while the governor was much more measured in her approach.

Wilders pulls his party out of ruling Dutch coalition in dispute over migration
THE HAGUE, Netherlands. June 3, (AP): Far-right lawmaker Geert Wilders pulled his party out of the ruling four-party Dutch coalition Tuesday in dispute over a crackdown on migration, sparking a political crisis and possibly the end of the 11-month-old government of Prime Minister Dick Schoof. Wilders announced his decision in a message on X after a brief meeting in parliament of leaders of the four parties that make up the fractious administration. The government crisis comes just three weeks before the Netherlands is scheduled to host a summit of NATO leaders in The Hague. Wilders told reporters that he was withdrawing his support for the coalition and pulling his ministers out of the Cabinet. "I signed up for the toughest asylum policy and not the downfall of the Netherlands,' Wilders said. Dilan Yesilgöz, leader of the right-wing People's Party for Freedom and Democracy, said before the meeting that Schoof urged the leaders to act responsibly. "The prime minister who appealed to us this morning said that we are facing enormous international challenges, we have a war on our continent, an economic crisis may be coming our way,' Yesilgöz told reporters in parliament. But just minutes later, the meeting was over and so was Wilders' involvement in the government. "I'm shocked,' Yesilgöz said, calling Wilders' decision "super-irresponsible.' After years in opposition, Wilders' party won the last election on pledges to slash migration. He has grown increasingly frustrated at what he sees as the slow pace of the coalition's efforts to implement his plans. Last week, Wilders demanded coalition partners sign on to a 10-point plan that aims to radically slash migration, including using the army to guard land borders and turning away all asylum-seekers. He said at the time that if immigration policy is not toughened up, his party "is out of the Cabinet.' He made good on that pledge Tuesday. Caroline van der Plas, leader of the pro-agriculture populist Farmers Citizens Movement, said she was angry at Wilders' decision. "He is not putting the Netherlands first, he is putting Geert Wilders first,' she told Dutch broadcaster NOS.
