[UPDATED] MCMC obtains court injunction against Edisi Siasat, Edisi Khas on Telegram
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has obtained an interim injunction from the High Court to prevent the republication of content from two Telegram channels, Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas.
The injunction follows MCMC's move to file a civil action against the two channels, which were found to have published content in breach of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
In a statement, the commission said the move was a last resort to stop the spread of harmful content and to prevent the republication of similar material.
"This action is taken to ensure that the rule of law is upheld and that the public interest continues to be protected.
"Telegram will be given the opportunity to present its defence in line with the principles of justice and fundamental rights," it said.
The commission added that this is the first action of its kind taken against a social media platform provider, specifically because Telegram holds a Class Application Service Provider [ASP(C)] licence.
The move follows Telegram's repeated failure to address content that has been reported to the platform numerous times, despite various negotiation efforts and cooperation extended by MCMC.
"As the regulatory authority, MCMC wishes to remind all social media platform providers that they are responsible for the content published on their respective digital platforms.
"MCMC will not hesitate to take similar action against other platforms to ensure the safety and well-being of users continue to be protected," it added.
The commission also said it remains committed to ensuring that the country's digital space remains safe, ethical, and in compliance with the law.

US tariff talks progressing well, says Anwar
Published on: Thursday, June 19, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 19, 2025 By: Pan Eu Joe, FMT Text Size: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim delivering his keynote address at the 38th Asia Pacific Roundtable in Kuala Lumpur today. Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says meetings in Washington to discuss the tariffs imposed on Malaysian exports are progressing well. Anwar said he had received positive updates from investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz and finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan after their meeting with US secretary of commerce Howard Lutnick yesterday. Advertisement 'I received text messages from (them) and they said the meeting went excellently,' he said during his keynote address at the 38th Asia Pacific Roundtable here. Tengku Zafrul travelled to Washington yesterday to continue negotiations on the tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. He previously said that discussions would focus on three key areas: reducing the current 24% tariff rate, addressing non-tariff barriers, and narrowing the trade imbalance between Malaysia and the US. Malaysian exports to the US face a 24% tariff unless an agreement is reached before a 90-day suspension expires on July 8. Anwar said Malaysia had consistently stressed the importance of regional cooperation in addressing trade challenges, particularly through Asean 'We always emphasise that to secure what is fair for Malaysia, we must present our case through Asean,' he said. 'I urge my colleagues in Asean to do the same. Present a united bilateral position to remain a credible and constructive partner.' Anwar acknowledged that the imposition of unilateral tariffs by the US presented a significant challenge to Malaysia and the region, particularly given the interconnected nature of global supply chains. He stressed that international trade should be governed by transparent rules and legitimate, inclusive legal frameworks, not unilateral tariffs or 'coercive economic measures'. Anwar also warned that disruptions in trade and supply chains could have detrimental effects on businesses and hamper economic growth, further undermining efforts to enhance the region's socio-economic development. He affirmed that Malaysia would continue to engage constructively with global partners including the US, China, European Union, and India to promote both national and regional interests. 'Malaysia's strategy of active non-alignment is a deliberate and principled approach aimed at maximising strategic flexibility, preserving decision-making autonomy, and engaging all partners on our own terms,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PETALING JAYA: Sekretariat Rakyat Benci Rasuah submitted a notice to the police today on its plan to hold another anti-corruption rally on June 28 in front of the Sogo shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur. The group's coordinator, Fakrurrazzi Khairur Rijal, said the notice was delivered to Dang Wangi police in accordance with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, fulfilling the legal requirements for a public gathering. Advertisement Describing the rally as a response to public concern over governance and accountability, the group said peaceful assemblies were a legitimate form of democratic expression. 'We welcome all Malaysians who believe in accountability and justice to stand with us on June 28,' it said. The rally follows a similar protest in January. The organisers said no significant action had been taken since a memorandum was submitted to the government in February, which was received by Sungai Petani MP Taufiq Johari along with 15 other government MPs. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
