CHP officer shoots woman with a knife, shuts down north 71 Freeway
A woman was hospitalized and all northbound lanes of the 71 Freeway were shut down after an officer-involved shooting in Chino Hills on Friday.
The California Highway Patrol told KTLA that at around 11:30 a.m., officers responded to calls of a woman armed with a knife walking on the freeway's right shoulder north of Butterfly Ranch Road and Euclid Avenue.
When the first officer arrived, he encountered the woman who was armed with what CHP described as a 'large knife.'
'During that encounter, she advanced toward our officer, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred,' Captain Salvador Suarez told KTLA's Shelby Nelson live on air.
The woman was struck and injured by a single gunshot wound and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Suarez said they received reports that the woman had been acting erratically but could not confirm whether she was intoxicated. 'It is something that we will be investigating,' he added.
Officials did not immediately have the woman's identity or age available on Friday afternoon. The officer involved in the shooting was not harmed.
As of 5 p.m., all northbound lanes except for the HOV lane remained closed.
With traffic already backing up not only from rush hour but also for Memorial Day Weekend, CHP said it hopes all lanes can reopen soon.

Man killed, woman seriously injured in two-vehicle crash in Fresno County, CHP says
One person was killed Thursday morning, another seriously injured in a Fresno County crash. The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened at 6:50 a.m. at the intersection of Buttonwillow and American avenues, near Reedley, in the CHP Kings River Resident Port area. A 64-year-old woman from Reedley was driving a Toyota Prius northbound on American when she entered the intersection to make a left turn onto southbound Buttonwillow. A 28-year-old man from Exeter was driving a Honda Accord westbound on Buttonwillow, which has no traffic controls at the intersection. CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said the Toyota entered the intersection in front of the Honda. In an attempt to avoid the collision, the driver of the Honda braked and steered left, but the front of the Toyota collided with the front of the Honda, causing major damage to both vehicles. Both vehicles came to rest on the northwest side of the intersection. The driver of the Honda Accord was pronounced dead. Officers determined the driver was not wearing a seat belt. The driver of the Toyota sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision, Salas said. The investigation is ongoing.

Driver killed in fiery crash on 215 Freeway in Murrieta
A driver was killed in a fiery crash on the 215 Freeway in Murrieta on Thursday morning. The crash was reported just before 3:30 a.m. on southbound lanes near Clinton Keith Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officers were dispatched to the area after learning of a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu that had lost control in the fast lane and collided with the center divider. The crash left the car inoperable and stalled in the No. 1 lane. The driver, the only passenger of the Malibu, decided to get out and stand in the center divider, while the driver remained behind the wheel and called for assistance, CHP's statement said. Minutes later, a Ford F-350 transit van also traveling southbound approached the stalled car but was unable to stop in time. The driver, only identified as a 61-year-old man from Moreno Valley, collided with the back of the Malibu. The force of the crash caused the van to spin into the middle of the freeway. The Malibu caught fire as a result of the crash. Firefighters from Murrieta Fire & Rescue responded to the scene and extinguished the flames. The driver of the car, only identified as a 22-year-old man from Temecula, was declared dead at the scene. The passenger was uninjured. The Moreno Valley man driving the van suffering minor injuries and was hospitalized for treatment, police said. 1 dead after SUV driver crashes into tree along freeway in Placer County
PENRYN — The passenger of an SUV died after the driver lost control and crashed into a tree along the side of a freeway in Placer County, authorities said Thursday night. It happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. along the shoulder of westbound Interstate 80, north of Penryn Road, near the community of Penryn. California Highway Patrol's Auburn division said the driver of a Toyota 4Runner may have lost control due to a blown tire, causing him to veer off the side of the freeway. The female passenger died at the scene from her injuries. The driver was hospitalized with major injuries. CHP Auburn said there were several dogs in the vehicle who are now being cared for by Placer County Animal Control.
