Indian-Origin Man Dies In Australia Days After Cops Kneeled On His Neck During Arrest
Last Updated:
The violent arrest took place after Kundi, who had been drinking, was involved in a public argument with his wife
A 42-year-old Indian-origin man, Gaurav Kundi, has died after sustaining critical brain injuries during a violent police restraint in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide, Australia. During the arrest, an officer had allegedly drove a knee into Kundi's neck.
Kundi, a father of two from Modbury North, was hospitalised on May 29 with severe brain injuries and passed away on June 12, according to The Australia Today.
The violent arrest took place after Kundi, who had been drinking, was involved in a public argument with his wife, Amritpal Kaur. During the argument, Kundi lay on the ground and reportedly pushed Kaur slightly. Police officers who arrived on the scene believed it was a domestic violence situation and restrained Kundi.
Kaur recorded part of the arrest on her phone, capturing Kundi saying, 'I didn't do anything wrong," as officers pinned him down. She later said she stopped filming after an officer placed a knee on Kundi's neck, similar to the 2020 George Floyd case in the United States. Kaur also claimed that during the arrest, Kundi's head was slammed against a police vehicle and the road, causing him to lose consciousness.
Kundi was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where doctors confirmed severe damage to his brain and neck nerves. Despite efforts to save him, he died nearly ten days later.
South Australian Police Commissioner Grant Stevens had defended the officers involved, stating that bodycam footage showed they followed proper training. 'At this stage, there is nothing to support any allegations that a knee was placed on the person's neck during the incident," he had stated, also dismissing claims of racial motivation.
Police said Kundi had violently resisted arrest after leaving his home intoxicated. Acting Assistant Commissioner John DeCandia said investigations are ongoing but expressed confidence that the officers acted appropriately based on initial evidence.
South Australia Premier Peter Malinauskas also backed the police, acknowledging the difficult nature of their work.

Amit Shah praise for CM Yogi Adityanath on hiring record 60,000 constables 'sans bias'
Amit Shah praise for CM Yogi Adityanath on hiring record 60,000 constables 'sans bias' LUCKNOW: India's largest-ever police recruitment drive in UP to hire 60,244 constables, 12,048 of them women, goes beyond staggering numbers to restore public faith in the transparency of the selection process, establish inclusivity, and build on the state's transition from a legacy of lawlessness to "robust" enforcement under CM Yogi Adityanath 's stewardship, home minister Amit Shah said Sunday at an investiture event in Lucknow's Defence Expo Ground. "Goons no longer dictate terms in the state. The rule of law has been established," Shah told the recruits, 15 of whom received their appointment letters from him. "Each of you was selected purely on merit from among 48 lakh applicants. There were no bribes, recommendations or caste-based bias, unlike when other governments were in office." The home minister's fulsome praise for Yogi in public effectively scotched speculation by some about the equation between the two. Shah commended the Yogi government for reserving 20% of the advertised posts in the constabulary for women, saying he was particularly delighted to meet some of those young recruits and see "confidence and determination written on their faces". "UP now has the largest police force in the country, equipped with command centres, AI-based tools, PCR vans, and forensic labs on wheels. This is in stark contrast to the scene before 2017. The Modi-Yogi governance synergy has since made the difference," he said. With Sunday's induction, the strength of the force stands at nearly four lakh personnel, which includes around 36,000 women. Shah also spoke about Operation Sindoor , saying PM Modi had unequivocally conveyed to Pakistan that "anyone who dares to shed Indian blood will be punished".

Tourism in Meghalaya thrives, visitors throng hill destination
1 2 3 4 Sohra: Tourist flow to Meghalaya continues with great enthusiasm as visitors explore the breathtaking views of hills and waterfalls. For tourists, the recent 'honeymoon horror' involving the death of Raja Raghuvanshi was the result of devilish minds fulfilling their vested interests, and it does not define the northeastern state or malign its image. A day after the accused, Raja's wife Sonam along with her four accomplices, were brought to Shillong on Wednesday, TOI visited Sohra on Thursday and spotted hundreds of tourists from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. TOI met a 19-member tourist group from Lucknow, including four children, at the Duwan Sing Syiem viewpoint in Sohra who had come for a two-day trip to Meghalaya. Two women of the group were found clicking pictures wearing traditional Khasi attire. Sunita Akshay looked happy in a Khasi traditional attire, called 'Jainsem', at the Duwan Sing Syiem View Point at Mawkdok Dympep Valley. The valley is located on the way from Shillong to Cherrapunjee. Admiring the natural beauty of the valley, she told TOI, "We have come all the way from Lucknow to explore the beauty of the state. We have heard about the recent Raja Raghuvanshi murder case here. But that does not mean tourists will stop coming." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! "They (the accused in the case) had devilish minds, hatched a conspiracy, and executed that to fulfil their vested interests. That is a different chapter. For tourists, it does not matter," she added. Her husband, Akshay, a businessman in Lucknow, said it was their first trip to Meghalaya and the 'heavenly natural beauty' of the state surprised them. Sunil Kumar, who had come from Samastipur in Bihar with his family of seven, was asking his minor son if he would like to experience the zip line adventure when TOI met him. His wife was enjoying the natural beauty of the state. Kumar added that they had planned to visit Cherrapunji from the Duwan Singh Syiem viewpoint, and the group was likely to visit the Double Decker Bridge at Nongrat. Regarding tourist safety, he said the Raja murder case was resolved with the arrest of the accused and it had been revealed that the case had no link to Meghalaya. "It was their (Sonam) case and they just selected Meghalaya as a place to execute their plan. So, we feel very safe here. We have been in Meghalaya for the last two days and have experienced a peaceful environment and warm cooperation from the locals," he added. Last year, Meghalaya was named India's top travel destination in Skyscanner's Travel Trends Report, outperforming global hotspots like Baku and Azerbaijan. Shillong was the only Indian city to make to the list. Meghalaya witnessed a year-on-year growth in tourist arrivals — from 10.24 lakh in 2022 to 14.22 lakh in 2023, a 38.9% increase, and further to 16.08 lakh in 2024, a 13.1% rise — reaffirming its rising appeal as a premier travel destination. CM Conrad K Sangma-led govt will now invest Rs 4,000 crore to develop tourism infrastructure, including the construction of high-end accommodations in tourist spots like Sohra and Umiam over the next two years.
