WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — West Hartford police say they've arrested an 83-year-old driver who allegedly fled the scene after striking a pedestrian last year. The pedestrian later succumbed to their injuries.
Sue Deffenbaugh, 83, was arrested by warrant on Tuesday. She was charged with evading responsibility resulting in death and failure to exercise reasonable care near a vulnerable user on a public way.

The charges stem from a collision on Nov. 9 at the intersection of Oakwood Avenue and St. James Street.
Police said a vehicle struck an elderly woman crossing in the area of an uncontrolled crosswalk. After the impact, they believe she was struck again by a second vehicle.
The first vehicle remained on scene, and the driver cooperated with police, but the second driver fled the scene. Police said they've determined Deffenbaugh was that driver.
The pedestrian sustained serious injuries and later died at a local hospital. She was identified as Patricia Brulotte, a real estate agent at Berkshire Hathaway Home Services for 20 years.

At the time of her death, colleagues described 'Patty' as hard-working and soft-spoken and said she never had a bad word to say about anyone.
This death happened as the town had been working to prevent deaths and serious injuries on roads in its Vision Zero initiative. The intersection where the collision occurred was already a concern for town engineers.
Deffenbaugh's warrant included a $400,000 court-set bond and a stipulation that she not operate a motor vehicle.
She was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on April 24.

Middletown mailman bit by pit bull days after USPS launched dog bite awareness campaign

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — A United States Postal Worker is recovering after a dog bit him multiple times on Monday afternoon. The incident happened at around 4:15 p.m. on Barbara Road. Mailman bit multiple times by pit bull in Middletown Witnesses to the incident said the 5-year-old pit bull forced his way out of the screen door and chased the mailman down. The mailman suffered multiple dog bites including his left thigh, left wrist, right forearm, lower abdomen and the back of his head. This incident happened just days after the United States Postal Service (USPS) launched its National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign, with a theme of 'Secure Your Dog, Keep Deliveries on Track.' The campaign was designed to remind residents to keep their dogs secured and away from the mail carrier. Some community members told News 8 that they believe the incident could've been prevented. 'I really feel bad that this has happened to him and it is all in how you bring your animals up,' Carol Perruccio, a Middlefield resident, said. 'I mean I know pit bulls are known to be aggressive, but I think it is all in the way you raise them and teach them.' USPS stated that there were more than 6,000 reported dog attacks on postal service employees last year. The incident is still being investigated by the city's animal control. Families of 3 workers killed on I-91 in March attend suspect's arraignment

SPRINGFIELD — After nearly 29 years of marriage, Melissa Almeida now carries a tiny vial of her late husband's ashes everywhere she goes. Her husband, Ryan Almeida, 48, was one of three construction employees working an overnight shift on a road job in West Springfield in March, repairing a guardrail damaged in a crash. He didn't survive the night. Prosecutors said Bilal Griffith, 29, of West Springfield, plowed into Ryan Almeida and two of his coworkers while speeding off Exit 10A on Interstate 91 northbound. Griffith then flipped the Jeep Cherokee he was driving onto its roof, and fled the scene on foot, prompting police officers to search for him with dogs and helicopters, according to prosecutors. At Griffith's arraignment in Hampden Superior Court Tuesday morning, Melissa Almeida saw the man accused of killing her husband for the first time. She heaved a sob when he was escorted into the courtroom in handcuffs and shackles. After the proceeding, when asked how she was coping, she responded 'I just breathe.' She held her husband's ashes in a blue heart-shaped container, and she told a reporter she has set up a makeshift memorial to her husband in her living room in Brockton. The couple had four children and three grandchildren. Almeida drove out from their hometown, a journey of about 100 miles, simply to attend the brief court proceeding. The families of Igor Costa, 26, of Marlborough, and Raul Bohorquez, also of Brockton, 57, were in attendance. The families were unable to attend Griffith's first arraignment in Springfield District Court in March. Griffith remains held on a $1 million cash bail and once again pleaded not guilty to three counts of manslaughter and one count of leaving the scene of a personal injury crash with death resulting. Almeida said she received a knock on the door around 5 a.m. the morning her husband was killed. She was met by a Massachusetts state trooper and two managers from Premier Fence, the workers' employer. 'I just knew right away, right then that something terrible had happened,' Almeida recalled.
