‘Just one puff': Poison Centre warns of severe symptoms from drug-laced ‘Magic Mushroom' vapes targeting teens
GEORGE TOWN, June 4 — A total of 76 poisoning cases linked to exposure to vapes suspected of containing prohibited substances were referred to the National Poison Centre (PRN) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) through the Poison Information Service from 2020 to last year.
PRN Senior Pharmacist Officer Mohd Fadhli Razali said the statistics show a sharp increase, with a significant spike starting in 2022 when 65 per cent, or 17 cases, were recorded out of the total vape exposure cases referred that year.
'These cases have risen annually, with 79 per cent (27 cases) in 2023 and 68 per cent (26 cases) in 2024. The majority, 81 per cent, involved vapes claimed to be Magic Mushroom Vape.
'Most cases involved teenagers aged 15 to 19 years (41 per cent) and early adults aged 20 years (53 per cent), indicating a growing trend among the younger generation,' he said in a statement today.
He said these findings highlight the urgent need for the government to take immediate action to prevent more young people from falling victim to addiction, particularly to new types of drugs like synthetic cannabinoids (lab-made substances that are chemically similar to chemicals found in the cannabis plant) detected in vape liquids.
Mohd Fadhli said most affected individuals experience symptoms such as seizures, fainting, vomiting, and psychiatric issues like hallucinations, delusions and behavioural changes, including aggression.
More alarmingly, many cases show severe poisoning symptoms even after just one or two puffs, posing risks to themselves and those around them, he added.
He said PRN's analysis of several vape liquid samples, claimed to contain Magic Mushroom, revealed they actually contained synthetic drugs capable of causing severe, potentially fatal poisoning.
'This shows how easily vapes can be manipulated. Without strict controls, it opens the door to the abuse of dangerous drugs in society. Teenagers are the primary targets for these products due to easy access through online platforms, which are difficult to regulate,' he said.
He stressed that the rising number of vape-related poisoning cases underscores the need for immediate enforcement of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) and support at the state level. — Bernama

Anwar says Malaysia supports Thai-Cambodia peace talks on June 14, offers to help de-escalate tensions
PUTRAJAYA, June 7 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today Malaysia is prepared to help Thailand and Cambodia reach a peaceful solution amid tension along the two countries' borders. Malaysia currently chairs the ten-member Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean), and Anwar held talks last night with the prime ministers of both countries as he sought to de-escalate the dispute, which reportedly caused one fatality. 'I have spoken to both of them and they've taken steps that we support, that includes dialogue at a meeting on June 14,' he told reporters after performing the Aidiladha prayers here. 'We are ready to observe and help if necessary, but so far, both nations have agreed to talk.' Thai and Cambodian troops were reported to have engaged in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province on May 28, which killed one Cambodian soldier. Phnom Penh said it plans to bring the matter to the International Court of Justice, while Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra yesterday expressed willingness to solve the dispute peacefully.

Selangor Sultan extends Aidiladha greetings, calls for stricter measures against rising haj scams
SHAH ALAM, June 7 — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has expressed sadness and disappointment over the rise in fraudulent haj travel packages affecting Muslims in the country. His Royal Highness said it was especially disheartening that those exploiting the situation were Muslims themselves, who were willing to deceive their fellow believers for personal gain. In this regard, His Royal Highness decreed that stern action be taken against any individual or travel agency offering haj packages that take advantage of and deceive Muslims. Sultan Sharafuddin said this in a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, in which His Royal Highness and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, extended Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Muslims across Malaysia. Sultan Sharafuddin also called on Muslims to uphold the sanctity of the haj by ensuring that all arrangements are made through licensed and recognised agents and companies authorised by the authorities to manage haj and umrah affairs. At the same time, Their Royal Highnesses prayed that Malaysian pilgrims would be granted a mabrur haj and return home safely. According to the statement, the Sultan and the Tengku Permaisuri also hoped that this Aidiladha would inspire all Muslims to be grateful for Allah's blessings and to perform the sacrificial rites to help the poor, as well as reflect on the plight of the less fortunate. — Bernama
