Trump abruptly leaves G-7 amid speculation US will bust Iranian bomb-making facility with bunker-buster

TOI correspondent from Washington:
US President Donald Trump abruptly left the G-7 summit in Calgary on Monday evening to attend to security related issues in the middle east, scuppering a planned bilateral engagement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived for the meeting even as Trump's departure was announced.
Trump was at the summit for less than 24 hours before his sudden departure, with White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt asserting that "much was accomplished, but because of what's going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State."
Israel-Iran conflict: Follow live updates
Moments earlier, Trump alarmed the world by urging "Everyone should immediately evacuate Teheran" at the tail end of a post that read: 'Iran should have signed the 'deal' I told them to sign. 'What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again!"
Trump is expected to go straight into a National Security Council meeting in the WH Situation room when he arrives in Washington DC, amid speculation that the US will join the Israeli attack to end Iran's nuclear program with one decisive move: Dropping a bunker-busted carried by American B-2 bombers -- the only weapon short of a nuclear bomb that can destroy the deeply buried nuclear enrichment facility at Fordo.

Formally called the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or the GBU-57, the 20 feet long bunker-buster weights 13600 kgs and can be lifted only by a B-2 bomber, neither of which Israel has even though it is a close US ally. Some experts reckon the US would have to use several GBU-57s to accomplish the mission of entombing Fordo, which war hawks see as the only way to decisively end Iran's pursuit of a nuclear weapon. Anything short of that will allow Iran to continue its pursuit of the atomic bomb.

Trump decision to support Israel's attack on Iran and back it up heavy-duty munitions where his mouth is has alarmed several MAGA acolytes who are screaming that he is betraying his America First promise and embroiling the country in a war that is not of vital interest to the US.
Among the first to break ranks is influential commentator Tucker Carlson, who went on a podcast with Steve Bannon (another isolationist), to argue that the US, already financially strapped, would only be weakened by getting involved in another war.
A stung Trump, shot back with a post saying "Someone please explain to kooky Tucker Carlson that Iran can not have a nuclear weapon!"
Carlson and some other MAGA principals have contended that the threat of Iran acquiring nukes is exaggerated and that there is not credible evidence that it is close to making a bomb. Among the few lawmakers who have dared to come out against Trump gradually putting US into the war is Marjorie Taylor Greene, who said "Anyone slobbering for the U.S. to become fully involved in the Israel/Iran war is not America First/MAGA.
"
"Wishing for murder of innocent people is disgusting. We are sick and tired of foreign wars. All of them. And this one will quickly engulf the Middle East, BRICS, and NATO as countries are required to take a side," she warned.

Infrastructure storing missiles of Iranian regime destroyed: IDF

Israel on Tuesday announced the destruction of several surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missile launchers of the Iranian regime as the hostilities between both nations escalated. 'Dozens of infrastructure for storing and launching surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missile launchers of the Iranian regime were destroyed. Last night, Air Force fighter jets completed several waves of attacks against dozens of Iranian regime military targets in western Iran. As part of the waves of attacks, the Air Force attacked dozens of infrastructures for storing and launching surface-to-surface missiles, UAV storage sites, and surface-to-air missile launchers in western Iran,' said the Israel Defence Force (IDF) in a post on X. The IDF also claimed that the Israeli Air Force on Monday conducted a precise strike based on intelligence targeting a communication centre that was being used for military purposes by the Iranian Armed Forces. 'The building was used by the Iranian Armed Forces under the guise of civilian activity, covering up the military use of the centre's infrastructure and assets. Prior to the strike, the IDF provided an effective advanced warning to the civilian population, including phone calls, to mitigate harm to civilians as far as feasible,' it stated. The IDF further announced that four high-ranking Iranian intelligence officials, including the chief of the Intelligence Organisation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), were killed in a precision airstrike carried out by Israeli fighter jets in Tehran. According to the Israeli military, the strike was executed on Sunday night, targeting a building in the Iranian capital where key intelligence personnel were assembled. 'Yesterday, Air Force fighter jets attacked, with precise intelligence guidance from the Intelligence Division in the Tehran area, a building where several senior officials in the Iranian regime's intelligence organisations were staying,' the IDF said in a post on X. Among those killed were Mohammad Khatami, head of the IRGC Intelligence Organisation since 2022, and his deputy Mohammad Hassan Mahkaghi. The IDF alleged that Khatami was responsible for surveillance, suppression of dissent, and orchestrating terror operations abroad. His deputy, Mahkaghi, previously headed the Strategic Intelligence Department and was described by Israel as a central figure in Iran's hostile intelligence efforts targeting Israel and regional actors. The strike also eliminated Muhsin Baqri, the head of the Quds Force's intelligence department, and his deputy Abu al-Fachel Nikoui. According to the IDF, the Quds Force officials were instrumental in coordinating with foreign militant groups, including Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and Iraq-based militias. 'Nikoui played a significant part in Iran's efforts to entrench itself in Syria and boost Hezbollah's strength in Lebanon,' the IDF added. 'This operation adds to the previous elimination of the head of the General Staff's Intelligence Department last Friday, marking a serious blow to Iran's intelligence apparatus and its capability to carry out attacks against Israel,' the Israeli military noted. As the Israel-Iran conflict entered its fifth day, the hostilities between the two nations continued to escalate as several missiles from Iran were fired at Israel, triggering air raid sirens in Haifa and dozens of other cities and communities across northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights, confirmed by the Israeli military. Meanwhile, in the latest developments, Bazan, Israel's largest oil refinery company, announced that all of its facilities at the Haifa Port had been completely shut down due to the damage caused by an Iranian missile strike.

G7 says Israel has ‘right to defend itself', calls Iran principal source of regional instability

The Group of Seven countries on Tuesday said that Israel has the 'right to defend' itself and described Iran as the principal source of regional instability and terror. They added that Iran 'can never have a nuclear weapon'. The G7, an informal grouping of advanced economies, comprises France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States. The annual summit of G7 leaders is being held in Kananaskis, Canada. The summit this year comes amid the latest round of the conflict between Israel and Iran that started on Friday when the Israeli military struck what it claimed were nuclear targets and also on other sites in Iran with an aim of stalling Tehran's nuclear programme. The attacks have led to concerns of an escalation and a wider conflict in the region. In a statement on Tuesday, the leaders of the G7 countries reiterated their commitment to peace and stability in West Asia. 'In this context, we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself,' the countries said. 'We reiterate our support for the security of Israel.' The statement said that the G7 grouping had been 'consistently clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon'. It further urged that the resolution of the crisis should lead to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in West Asia, including a ceasefire in Gaza. The countries said that it would 'remain vigilant to the implications for international energy markets and stand ready to coordinate, including with like-minded partners, to safeguard market stability'. On Monday, Reuters had quoted an unidentified US official as saying that US President Donald Trump would not sign the draft statement from the G7 leaders calling for the de-escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran. However, the joint statement published on Tuesday was signed by Trump, BBC reported. Israel-Iran conflict Over the past five days, the Israel Defense Forces have repeatedly hit sites in Tehran and several other cities. Iran's main nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz was among the targets that were hit. On Saturday, Iran retaliated with missile attacks at several places across Israel, including the cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa. The two sides have continued to attack each other with air strikes and ballistic missiles. More than 220 persons have died in Israeli strikes in Iran. In Israel, at least 24 persons have been killed in Iranian attacks so far. On Monday, the Israel Defense Forces issued a warning, asking people in District 3 of the Iranian capital to leave the area immediately for their safety. 'In the coming hours, the Israeli Army will take action in this area to attack the Iranian regime's military infrastructure, just as it has done in recent days around Tehran,' the Israeli forces had said. Hours later, Trump had also urged people living in Tehran to immediately evacuate. Israel has claimed that Iran was 'closer than ever' to obtaining a nuclear weapon, and said it had no choice but to 'fulfil the obligation to act in defence of its citizens'. Iran has for long maintained that its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes.
