What Rishi Sunak can expect on the Coast to Coast walk – as he bids to make it ‘UK's greatest national trail'

Yahoo10-11-2024

The Coast to Coast walk may just be the holy grail of British long-distance footpaths: a rambling 190-mile trek from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay in Yorkshire, crossing the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks on its journey between the western and eastern seaboards of England.
The route was created in 1975 by legendary hillwalker Alfred Wainwright in his book A Coast to Coast Walk, but in recent years another, perhaps unlikely, figure is attempting to position himself as its saviour: Rishi Sunak.
While not known primarily as a vigorous outdoorsman, Sunak has made much of his successful campaign to have the legendary Coast to Coast walk, which passes through his North Yorkshire constituency of Richmond and Northallerton, turned into an official national trail. At the end of October, in his final Prime Minister's Questions as leader of the Conservative Party, Sunak called on PM Keir Starmer to ensure that the planned upgrades to the route, which are due to be completed in 2025, go ahead – and he even claimed that he is planning on walking the route himself.
If Sunak does decide to follow in Wainwright's footsteps, what can he expect now that his mission to turn the walk into an official national trail is almost complete?
Muddy boots
It is hard to imagine that many people could single-handedly obliterate the cultural cachet of a fashionable clothing item quite as devastatingly as Rishi Sunak did to the ascendant Adidas Samba in April. Rishi would be well advised to leave the snow-white sneakers at home, however, if he does embark on the Coast to Coast.
For one thing, tradition dictates that the first act of this coast-to-coast walk is to stroll across the sand at St Bees and dunk your boots in the Irish Sea. Only when you have done the same in the North Sea at Robin Hood's Bay can you consider your journey complete. Another tradition demands that walkers pick up a stone on the western beach, carry it with them the whole way, and then deposit it in the ocean upon reaching Yorkshire's east coast.
In between, sturdy boots are needed to tackle some of the country's most beautiful and (in places) challenging footpaths. The Lake District is the prettiest part of the walk but also the trickiest, with lakeside scrambles on Ennerdale Water and lung-busting ascents up fells such as Eagle Crag.
If he's feeling brave, Rishi can claim his place among the most hardened Coast to Coasters by choosing to tackle Helvellyn's vertiginous Striding Edge, a knife-blade ridge which will include one of the national trail's optional 'braided' sections (as it does in Wainwright's book).
Sensible signage
In keeping with all 16 UK national trails, the Coast to Coast will soon become very well signposted with waymarkers bearing the national trails' ubiquitous acorn symbol, ensuring it will be more or less impossible to get lost.
Some Coast to Coast purists, however, are concerned that this will injure the spirit of the trail. Wainwright's intention, as stated in his book, was not to create a prescriptive route, but to inspire people to choose their own adventure.
'I want to encourage in others the ambition to devise with the aid of maps their own cross-country marathons,' he wrote, 'and not be merely followers of other people's routes.'
Historically, part of the fun of the Coast to Coast was getting lost, having to pick your way across boggy mires or navigate crumbling footpaths. That will no longer be so commonplace after the 'upgrades' to the route, which include not only signposting but laying flagstones over some of the boggiest sections of the North York Moors.
However, the national trails planners are making concessions to these concerns by braiding some sections of the route, so that you will still have the option to choose; and, of course, you can always go off-piste anyway.
Rich history
Natural beauty is everywhere on the Coast to Coast, but so is rich human history. Rishi should take the time before embarking on his walk to stop into St Bees Priory, where the body of a medieval crusading knight was discovered in 1981, remarkably preserved by a covering of lead and pine.
In Grasmere, Rishi would do well to join the throngs looking around Dove Cottage, former home of William Wordsworth. Sunak came under fire in 2020, when, as chancellor, he suggested that the creative arts were not a viable job. Wordsworth's career may give him pause for thought. The laudanum-laced travails of Wordsworth's brilliant but troubled housemate from hell, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, not so much.
Elsewhere, cultural and historical highlights include the crumbling ruins of Richmond Castle and the Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge, an atmospheric pub which marks the highest point on the North York Moors – a non-negotiable place for a pitstop.
Proper scran
Sunak raised more than a few eyebrows when he boasted, during a 2022 interview about the cost of living crisis, about the 'whole range of different' breads which can be found in his house. The Coast to Coast, it turns out, is the perfect walk for a man of such diverse culinary tastes.
In the western half, Rishi can sustain himself on the coiled Cumberland sausage. This is a stalwart on restaurant menus like the Black Bull in Kirkby Stephen, the town often considered the spiritual capital of the Coast to Coast. As Rishi heads east into Yorkshire and towards the coast, he will no doubt be propelled by the thought of fish and chips at a cosy pub in Robin Hood's Bay. The Smugglers Ale House is the classic place for Coast to Coasters to end their walk with a very well-earned pint.
Where to stay
If Rishi is to tackle the entire Coast to Coast, he will be laying his head in all sorts of places, including, presumably, his constituency home in Richmond, around halfway through the trail. The whole thing takes an average of two weeks, and unless he's camping – hard to imagine for a man worth £651m – he'll be choosing from a succession of pubs and B&Bs. Many of them are extremely welcoming and comforting, like The Old Croft House in Kirkby Stephen, run by passionate walkers who will set you on your way with expert tips for walking the next leg of the path.

Trump brings the BOOM! New order opens skies across US to supersonic flights

President Donald Trump has ordered the Federal Aviation Administration to scrap a longstanding ban on supersonic air travel across the U.S. and replace it with a to-be-determined set of regulations that will allow faster-than-sound travel so long as the sonic booms it creates do not breach certain noise limitations. In an executive order signed on Friday, Trump directed the FAA administrator to begin the process of repealing a section of the Code of Federal Regulations that prohibits anyone in the United States from flying a civilian aircraft 'at a true flight Mach number greater than 1.' That regulation was imposed in April 1973, at a time when the British and French governments were jointly developing Concorde, a supersonic airliner that had a cruising speed in excess of Mach 2, or twice the speed of sound. Because aircraft that break the sound barrier create shockwaves that produce loud sounds, known as sonic booms, the U.S. government banned supersonic flight over the U.S. out of concern over disruptive noise from supersonic jets criss-crossing the country. As a result, Concorde was limited to subsonic speeds when arriving or leaving American airports, only crossing the sound barrier during transit over the Atlantic Ocean on routes between New York's JFK airport and London. Michael Kratsios, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, told reporters that Trump's order 'seeks to revolutionize supersonic aviation in the United States' by allowing for modern aircraft to fly faster than sound over the continental U.S. 'The US used to be the global leader in this technology, but stifling regulations have grounded progress for generations. The reality is that Americans should be able to fly from New York to LA in under four hours,' he said. Kratsios added that 'advances in aerospace engineering, material science and noise reduction' by new startups working on faster-than-sound passenger aircraft can make supersonic travel 'safe, sustainable and commercially viable' and noted that the longstanding American ban on such flights had ' grounded supersonic passenger flight and weakened our global competitiveness in aviation.' 'Today's order fixes that,' he said. Trump's order comes just weeks after a pair of Republicans in Congress, Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas and Senator Ted Budd of North Carolina, introduced legislation to direct the FAA to repeal and replace the current supersonic flight ban within a year. That legislation will no longer be necessary, as the Trump executive order directs the FAA to withdraw the ban within 180 days and launch a notice-and-comment period for replacement regulations that would be based on a noise standard rather than a strict speed limit. According to a senior administration official, the function of the new regulations would be 'to replace the effective speed standard with instead an interim noise standard, and then to have a longer term process to publish a Notice of Proposed Rule Making to result in a final rule.' That process would be 'coordinated through the White House [and] through the National Science and Technology Council' and would be based on research and development that has been going on at NASA, the Department of Defense, and 'elsewhere within the federal government,' the official said. Trump's effort to enable supersonic flight across the U.S. follows the success of the first flight of a civilian supersonic aircraft since Concorde 216 (registered as G-BOAF) made its' final flight to Bristol Filton Airport in 2003. In January, Boom Supersonic's XB-1 aircraft reached a speed of Mach 1.122 during a 34-minute flight over California's Mojave Desert. The test flight, just eight days into Trump's second term, produced no audible sonic boom — or at least not one that was heard from the ground during the flight. The company says its' proposed Overture passenger jet will cut a trip from Los Angeles to Washington to three hours and 15 minutes, more than an hour less than the current duration of such a flight, while producing no sonic booms that are audible from the ground. It attributes this to atmospheric effects that cause the sound to reflect off layers in the atmosphere and travel upward, rather than downward. It also claims to be able to cut flights over water by even more time by reaching even higher speeds.

Canadian ultramarathoner stopped to breastfeed daughter and still won

Mothers know how to juggle tasks, but one mom showed how she can juggle the needs of her newborn — and win a race. Stephanie Case, 42, a Canadian who lives in Chamonix, France, entered the 100-km Ultra-Trail Snowdonia in Eryri National Park in Wales on May 17 with 'no expectations,' so when she won, it was 'a surprise,' she wrote on Instagram. The runner had her daughter just six months ago and is still breastfeeding. She also hadn't entered a race in three years due to 'recurrent miscarriages and IVF failures,' Case shared, but wanted it to serve as a 'warmup' to another event — next month's 165-km Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run in Colorado. 'My goals were to enjoy myself and make sure Pepper was fed at aid stations,' she continued. Case noted that she started in the 'last wave,' giving the leaders a 30-minute head start. 'Sure, I had hundreds of runners in front of me, but I could go at my own pace in blissful ignorance of my placing,' the mom explained. Case described it like riding a bike, and said it was a reminder that she 'hadn't lost a thing' over the past three years of not racing. The new mom got special permission to pause to breastfeed, on the one condition that she couldn't accept aid during the stops, Case told NPR. She said that her partner carried their baby to the 20-, 50- and 80-kilometre checkpoints and handed the little one over for a few minutes to feed before going back to running. Case told the outlet that she was more concerned with her fuel intake and feeding schedule than her race time. 'During the race, I was taking in about 80 to 100 grams of carbohydrates an hour,' she said. 'And I kept that up until about 65K, and then I had to pull back a bit because I was getting quite nauseous. And then I ramped it back up again and was kind of done at 95K.' She admitted: 'That's when I started getting really nauseous.' That's also when she 'lost all bladder control,' she revealed on Instagram. Case finished the race and was quickly told the incredible news. 'I WON?!?,' she recalled in disbelief. Chinese marathon runner disqualified for chain-smoking through entire race Humanoid robots run Chinese half-marathon alongside flesh-and-blood competitors British YouTuber allowed into North Korea to run marathon 'I didn't even know I had won until after I crossed the line.' Case credits motherhood for the win, writing that she found she 'gained way more joy and strength from this sport as a mom than I ever did before.' She added: 'I wanted to show her — both of us — how amazing mom runners can be.' Check out our sports section for the latest news and analysis.
