DemCon-25 to focus on ‘awareness to action'
Visakhapatnam: Focusing on the theme 'from awareness to action', a national conference on dementia care 'DemCon-2025' will be organised in the month of December this year.
The two-day event, scheduled to take place on December 5th and 6th, will feature plenary sessions, thought-provoking panels, practical workshops, and meaningful networking opportunities.
Organised jointly by Dementia India Alliance (DIA), Gitam Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, and Sneha Sandhya Age Care Foundation, 'DemCon-2025' aims to bring together clinicians, caregivers, researchers, policymakers and advocates from across the country and beyond to share knowledge, explore innovations and build a better future for persons living with dementia.
The conference website was launched by the GITAM secretary M. Bharadwaj at the campus along with the organising committee members, led by G. Sambasiva Rao, Sneha Sandhya Age Care Foundation (SSACF) Trustees Board Chairman and DemCon 25 organising committee co-chairperson, K. Kumaraja, SSACF trustees board vice chairman, N.S. Raju, SSACF trustees board managing trustee.

NMC proposes 3-year rotatory headship for departments in medical colleges
New Delhi, The National Medical Commission has proposed introducing three-year rotatory headship for departments in medical colleges among eligible faculty members who qualify for promotion based on seniority and possession of a postgraduate medical degree. Suggesting draft amendments to the Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations 2023, the NMC has also proposed including MS as a feeder broad specialty qualification for several super-specialty courses, such as MCh in Neurosurgery, MCh in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and other MCh programmes. The draft amendments have been published in the official gazette on May 30 and the NMC has invited feedback from stakeholders such as from students, faculty, and the medical community on the changes. Under the existing 2023 regulations, each department is led by a professor appointed as the head of department . "The post of the Head of Department will be rotated every three-years amongst professors and associate professors who hold medical postgraduate degree, based on seniority in the department," the NMC said in the proposal. This proposal comes amid demands from faculty associations of several medical colleges and academic bodies for more equitable administrative structures. This move aims to bring in fairness and provide opportunities for younger and qualified faculty to take on leadership roles. In April, the Faculty Association of AIIMS , Delhi, and the Faculty Association of PGI Chandigarh had jointly expressed deep concern over the continued delay in implementing the long-standing policy of rotatory headship in these premier institutions. A General Body Meeting of FAIMS was held on April 16 followed by the General Body Meeting of the PGI Chandigarh Faculty Association on April 17. "Both the bodies unanimously voiced that the rotatory headship system, along with the collegium system, is essential for promoting a fair, transparent, and democratic governance structure within their institutions," the two bodies had said in a joint statement. In 2023, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare formally communicated that the rotatory headship policy would be implemented in AIIMS, Delhi and PGI Chandigarh from June 2024. Despite this, no tangible steps have been taken towards its enforcement, even after the lapse of almost a year and repeated representations by faculty bodies, the joint statement had said. The regulations, if approved, will be called the 'Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations , 2025'.

NMC yet to give permission for enhancement of medical seats; medical seat matrix delayed
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-2025) results will be out in a few days, and this time, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has made preparations to conduct the Common Entrance Test (CET-2025) and NEET counselling simultaneously for admission to various professional courses, including medical and engineering. However, even though the deadline given by KEA has expired, the Department of Medical Education (DME) has not submitted the medical seat matrix. It has been learnt that the reason for the delay is that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has not yet given permission for the enhancement of undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) medical seats in the State's medical colleges for 2025-26. The DME had submitted a proposal to the NMC in March 2025 for the enhancement of a total of 800 MBBS and 700 PG medical seats for the State. However, even after three months of submitting the request, permission has not been granted for the seat enhancement. The last date for submitting the seat matrix was June 4, 2025. The Technical Education Department has submitted the seat matrix, according to which a total of 69,717 government quota engineering seats are available for 2025-26. This year, there has been an increase of 7,650 (11.9%) engineering seats, all of them Computer Science and related courses. Tentative seat matrix However, the DME has already prepared a tentative medical seat matrix for 2025-26, including the number of additional seats proposed in the request submitted to the NMC and the seats available in government medical college proposed to be established in Ramanagara and the Farookh Academy of Medical Education in Mysuru starting this year. There are a total of 71 medical colleges in the State, out of which 12,395 MBBS seats will be available this year. In addition, 3,355 dental seats are available in 45 dental colleges, 39,595 BSc Nursing seats in 650 nursing colleges, 16,441 Allied Health Sciences seats in 202 Allied Health Sciences Colleges, and 5,710 seats in 120 Physiotherapy colleges. In addition, 4,027 PG medical seats are available in 47 postgraduate medical colleges, 846 MDS seats in 31 postgraduate dental colleges, 4,772 seats in 204 postgraduate nursing colleges, 1,217 seats in 43 PG allied health sciences colleges, and 819 seats in 41 PG physiotherapy colleges. Speaking to The Hindu, Rathod, director, Directorate of Medical Education said, 'It is not known why the NMC is delaying the increase in seats in medical courses. Already, the NMC has served show-cause notices to 22 government medical colleges and several private medical colleges that are facing problems, including non-appointment of necessary faculty. We have given an appropriate response to the NMC in this regard. So, we are hoping that we may get permission to increase the UG and PG medical seats before the NEET results. The matrix will be submitted as soon as the NMC gives permission.'
