Global cinema attendance drops in 2024

Daily Tribune18-05-2025

Cinema ticket sales fell 8.8% worldwide in 2024 from the previous year, marking the first annual drop since the Covid pandemic, the European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO) said in Cannes on Friday.
The decline comes after years of recovery for the industry since the collapse triggered by pandemic restrictions in 2020.
"In 2024, a total of 4.8 billion cinema tickets were sold worldwide, generating estimated revenues of 28 billion euros," Martin Kanzler, a film analyst at the EAO, said in a press conference on the sidelines of annual film festival.
"That is 500 million fewer tickets than in 2023.
" Since 2020 -- a disastrous year for cinemas due to health restrictions -- cinema attendance worldwide had been rising.
"Perhaps we have reached a new plateau," Kanzler said.
Cinema attendance is now at 68% of 2019 levels, the last year before the pandemic, compared with more than 70% in 2023.
In this sluggish environment, Europe is faring better than other regions of the world, with cinema attendance at 75% of 2019 levels, and the decline in ticket sales was just 1.7% in 2024. By contrast, in China -- the world's largest market with a 21% share -- attendance plunged by 22%.
In Europe, two countries stand out for their density of cinemas per capita and a high average attendance rate -- France and Ireland.
Regarding productions, 81% are linked to films produced in three countries -- the United States, China and India, said Manuel Fioroni, an analyst at the EAO.
Unlike Chinese and Indian productions, which are sold almost exclusively to their domestic markets, American films are exported and "cross borders easily thanks to their distribution network but also their international audience".
"Transnational distribution across macro regions remain difficult for theatrical films, with the exception of Hollywood movies, that can travel easily across borders through their distribution network, but also to international audiences," Fioroni said.
In Europe, 63% of cinemagoers saw an American film in 2024.
However, European productions are catching up and recorded a 33% market share.
"And this is the best result in four years, even 10 if we exclude somehow the typical year that was 2020 in the middle of the pandemic," Fioroni said. Of the 20 biggest box office hits in Europe, 18 are American films.
"Inside Out 2", "Despicable Me 4" and "Deadpool & Wolverine" took the top three spots.
The two European productions in the top 20 are both French: "Un p'tit truc en plus" and "Le comte de Monte-Cristo".

Who Is Lucy Guo, the Youngest Self-Made Female Billionaire in the World?

Lucy Guo, a 30-year-old tech entrepreneur and investor, has become the world's youngest self-made female billionaire, surpassing music icon Taylor Swift in the process. With an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion, Guo's rise to the top is a remarkable tale of innovation, risk-taking, and persistence. Born in Fremont, California to Chinese immigrant parents, Guo showed an early aptitude for technology. As a child, she taught herself to code, eventually earning money by developing bots for online games. She enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University to study computer science but left after being selected for the prestigious Thiel Fellowship, which encourages young talents to forgo formal education in favor of entrepreneurial pursuits. Guo's breakthrough came in 2016 when she co-founded Scale AI, a data-labeling company that became foundational to the growth of artificial intelligence technologies. Although she left the company in 2018 following internal disagreements, Guo retained nearly 5% equity. With Scale AI's recent valuation reaching $25 billion, that stake alone accounts for a significant portion of her wealth. After her departure from Scale AI, Guo co-founded Backend Capital, a venture capital firm that has backed several successful startups. She then launched Passes in 2022, a creator-focused platform that helps influencers monetize fan interactions using AI-driven features. The company has since attracted high-profile names and raised $50 million across multiple funding rounds, achieving a valuation of $150 million. Despite her accomplishments, Guo has faced controversy. Passes is currently the subject of a class-action lawsuit involving allegations of inappropriate content monetization. The company has firmly denied all accusations, calling the claims baseless. Guo is known for her vibrant lifestyle and tireless work ethic, often working from early morning until midnight. She credits her productivity to efficiency, team collaboration, and regular exercise. Despite her financial success, Guo insists she doesn't feel she has 'made it,' and continues to seek new ways to innovate and lead. From college dropout to billionaire tech founder, Lucy Guo's story is emblematic of a new generation of entrepreneurs reshaping the global economy — not only through technology but also through bold, often unconventional paths to success.

Maternal musings

NON-FICTION book How to Lose Your Mother: A Daughter's Memoir by Molly Jong-Fast is set to hit the shelves on June 10. In it, the author dives into the complicated relationship she always had with her mother, Erica Jong, a famous American novelist and poet. She also describes how watching her mother 'slipping away' due to memory loss has been affecting her; Erica, who was diagnosed with dementia, is currently residing in a retirement home. Erica Jong is best known for her 1973 novel Fear of Flying, which resonated with women who felt stuck in unfulfilling marriages and helped start a feminist movement. According to Molly, Erica never got over being famous, elaborating that she was never able to process drifting away from the public consciousness after once being an inescapable name in the media, which made her 'inaccessible'. 'I wish I had asked her why, if she loved me so much, she didn't ever want to spend time with me, but there was no way she would have ever given me a straight answer. And besides, in her view, she did spend time with me — in her head, in her writing, in the world she inhabited,' Molly said in an interview. Following in her mother's footsteps, Molly is also a writer and journalist who holds a Master's degree in Fine Arts and is the author of two novels, Normal Girl (2000) and The Social Climber's Handbook (2011).
