IPL 2025: MI batters' brilliance powers them to 203/6 against Punjab in Qualifier 2
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 2 (ANI): Exceptional batting performance from the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) powered them to a solid total of 203/6 in their 20 overs during Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
The Punjab-based franchise needs to chase a target of 204 runs in order to reach to their second final of the competition after 2014.
PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Right-hand batters Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow came out to open the innings for the Mumbai-based franchise in the game.
The side didn't have the start that they wanted, as the Hardik Pandya-led side lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma at the score of 19. The right-hand batter went back to the pavilion after scoring just eight runs.
Following Rohit's dismissal, left-hand batter Tilak Varma was promoted up the order. The Mumbai side touched the 50-run mark in the fifth over of the innings.
On the last ball of the seventh over, the Mumbai team lost their second wicket as Bairstow was dismissed by right-arm seamer Vijaykumar Vyshak. The right-hand batter went back to the dressing room after scoring 38 runs off 24 balls, which came with the help of three fours and two sixes in his innings.
After Bairstow's departure, right-hand batter Suryakumar Yadav came out to bat. In the 10th over of the innings, the MI side completed their 100-run mark.
The Mumbai Indians team lost their third and fourth wicket at the score of 142. The batters to get dismissed at 142 were Suryakumar Yadav (44 runs off 26 balls) and Tilak Varma (44 runs from 29 balls).
In the end, right-hand batter Naman Dhir came out to bat and scored a crucial 37 runs in just 18 balls, which was laced by seven boundaries at a strike rate of 205.56.
For the Shreyas Iyer-led side, two wickets were snapped by Azmatullah Omarzai (2/43 in 4 overs) and one wicket each was grabbed by Kyle Jamieson (1/30 in 4 overs), Marcus Stoinis (1/14 in 1 over), Vijaykumar Vyshak (1/30 in 3 overs), and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/39 in 4 overs) in their respective spells.

Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru owner Vijay Mallya opened up about what inspired him to purchase an IPL franchise back in 2008, at a time when T20 cricket was only beginning to gain traction among fans. The decision to introduce a large-scale franchise league model seemed like a bold and risky venture for the BCCI in 2007. Yet, Lalit Modi, the board's vice-president and the league's inaugural chairman, possessed a vision and committed determination to transform it into something extraordinary. Mallya was one of the few high-profile names of the country who got associated with the league from the inaugural edition itself. He bought the Bengaluru-based franchise for USD 111.6 million back in 2008 and named it Royal Challengers Bangalore. The liquor baron, who is accused of defaulting on loans worth several crores from Indian banks, shared how Lalit Modi made an impressive pitch to him for buying an IPL team. Mallya also disclosed that he had placed a bid for the Mumbai franchise but narrowly missed out, with Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, ultimately securing the team for USD 111.9 million. "I was very impressed with the pitch that Lalit Modi made to the BCCI committee about this league. He called me one day and said ok, teams are going to be auctioned. Are you going to buy it? So, I bid from three franchises, and I lost Mumbai by a very small amount of money," Mallya said on a podcast with Raj Shamani. Mallya claimed that he saw the cash-rich league as a game-changer for Indian cricket, which is why he decided to make a lucrative bid to get a team. "When I bid for the RCB franchise in 2008, I saw the IPL as a game-changer for Indian cricket. My vision was to create a team that embodied the spirit of Bangalore—vibrant, dynamic, glamorous," he added. Mallya said that his vision was to give the franchise a bold identity by associating it with one of their top-selling liquor brands, and named it Royal Challengers Bangalore. Piyush Chawla Retires from All Forms of Cricket After 20-Year Career
Piyush Chawla, the well-known leg-spin bowler, has said he is retiring from all forms of cricket. He was part of India's World Cup-winning teams in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. He played 3 Test matches, 25 ODIs, and 7 T20Is for India and took a total of 43 wickets. In the IPL (Indian Premier League), Chawla played 192 matches and also took 192 wickets, making him one of the top bowlers in the tournament's history. He won the 2014 IPL title with Kolkata Knight Riders and hit the winning runs in the final. He last played in the 2024 IPL for Mumbai Indians. Chawla posted a message online, saying it's time to say goodbye after more than 20 years of playing cricket. He said cricket will always be in his heart, and he is now ready to start a new chapter in life.
