Saudi Arabia deploys Patriot missile system around Mecca

Mecca, June 6 (UNI) Saudi Arabia has implemented strict security measures for Hajj, including deploying the US-made Patriot missile defence system around Mecca.
The Saudi Ministry of Defence has released images of the special security arrangements on X, showing the Patriot missile system deployed in the vicinity of Mecca, to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
Another post shows a military helicopter conducting aerial surveillance over the area.
The Saudi authorities said these measures aim to guarantee the protection of pilgrims, especially this year when millions of Muslims are to visit Saudi Arabia for their spiritual journey during Hajj.
The Patriot missile system is based on the latest technology and is designed to counter ballistic missiles, drones, and other aerial threats.
Saudi officials have emphasised that the safety of pilgrims is their top priority, and have taken all possible measures to provide a secure environment for pilgrims to perform their spiritual duties.
Saudi Arabia has also intensified the enforcement of Hajj permit regulations this year, barring individuals without official permits from entering Mecca.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that security forces had been deployed across all key access points to Mecca to prevent unauthorised individuals from entering the city in the days leading up to Hajj.
The intensified measures come in response to longstanding concerns over the strain placed on infrastructure and essential services by unauthorised pilgrims, Arab News said.
The Ministry of Interior has repeatedly said that individuals caught attempting to perform Hajj with no valid Hajj permit will face a fine of SR20,000 with enforcement in effect from April 29 to June 10.
Authorities reported the dismantling of 252 fake Hajj campaigns, the arrest of 1,239 illegal transporters, and the return of 269,678 non-residents of Makkah, 75,943 unauthorised pilgrims and 109,632 vehicles. An additional 11,610 individuals were found violating residency, labor and border laws.

Rahul Gandhi alleges 'match-fixing' in Maha polls, says Bihar will be next

New Delhi, June 7 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the 2024 Maharashtra polls were "rigged" and serve as a "blueprint for rigging democracy", and added that the same "match-fixing will come to Bihar next". Tagging an article written by himself, titled 'Match-fixing Maharashtra', in an English Daily, the former Congress president on X said, "How to steal an election? Maharashtra assembly elections in 2024 were a blueprint for rigging democracy". Giving "step by step" account of his claim, Gandhi said, "First rig the panel for appointing the Election Commission then add fake voters to the roll, inflate voter turnout and target the bogus voting exactly where BJP needs to win and then hide the evidence". He further said, "It's not hard to see why the BJP was so desperate in Maharashtra. But rigging is like match-fixing - the side that cheats might win the game, but damages institutions and destroy public faith in the result". Urging the people to examine the evidence and demand answers, Rahul Gandhi said, "All concerned Indians must see the evidence. Judge for themselves. Demand answers". Gandhi also alleged that like Maharashtra, Bihar too will see the same "match-fixing" in the upcoming state elections, due later this year. "Because the match-fixing of Maharashtra will come to Bihar next, and then anywhere the BJP is losing. Match-fixed elections are a poison for any democracy," the Raebareli MP said. UNI RBE RN

J-K Waqf Board Chaiperson Darakshan Andrabi extends greetings on Eid-al-Adha

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 7 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board Chairperson Darakshan Andrabi on Saturday extended greetings to people on the occasion of Eid-al-Adha. 'I extend greetings to all Muslims on the occasion of Eid offered prayers peacefully and prayed for peace and prosperity. This is very important for our Jammu and Kashmir...', Andrabi told ANI. Earlier in the day, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and her daughter Iltija Mufti offered Namaz in Srinagar on the occasion of Eid-al-Adha. Pointing out that the gates of the Jama Masjid have been 'locked again', PDP leader Iltija Mufti said, 'Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been put under house arrest again. I want to ask the NC government and the LG why Mirwaiz is still being placed under house arrest when you claim everything is normal. As India's only and the largest Muslim majority state, we Kashmiris have the right to worship... More than infrastructure, we need dignity and security of life.' After offering prayers, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said she also offered prayers for the people of Palestine. 'We pray that Palestine is soon free from the atrocities being committed by Israel. Unfortunately, the government, on this pious day, has denied permission to offer namaz in the Jama Masjid, and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been put under house arrest... I protest against the state government also, which is just watching everything and doing nothing,' the former J-K Chief Minister said. 'Unfortunately, the government, on this pious day, has denied permission to offer namaz in the Jama Masjid and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been put under house arrest... I protest against the state government also, which is just watching everything and doing nothing,' she added. Meanwhile, Jammu Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah extended greetings on the festival across the country, calling the festival a time for peace and strengthening brotherhood. Speaking to media persons, CM Abdullah said, 'I hope this Eid brings better days ahead for the Muslims of India and the world. I hope it brings peace and strengthens brotherhood. While we are celebrating Eid, unfortunately, once again, permission was denied to offer namaz in Srinagar's iconic Jama Masjid. I dont know the basis of these decisions, but we need to learn to trust our people. These are the same people who came out to protest against the Pahalgam terrorist government should think about allowing namaz in the historic Jama Masjid.' (ANI)
