Sarawak in talks to bring US artist for exclusive performance this October
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak government is in negotiations to bring a well-known artist from the United States for an exclusive performance in Kuching this October, said Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
In a report published by TVS, Karim said that staging large-scale concerts has had a positive impact on Sarawak's tourism sector, attracting visitors from neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and Brunei.
Kuching and Miri, he added, have now become major attractions for foreign tourists, who visit not only for entertainment but also to enjoy the tourism products offered in Sarawak.
"If an event is held in Kuching, particularly if it involves singers or performers well-known in neighbouring countries, we can see a significant increase in the number of vehicles entering Sarawak from the border.

"For example, during last year's countdown event, the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex in Tebedu experienced congestion for three consecutive days.
"Visitors from West Kalimantan knew that Hetty Koes Endang would be performing," Karim was quoted as saying.
He also said that Earth, Wind and Fire will perform at the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2025.
"Nevertheless, it is important to feature local artists in every major event as a way to build confidence and strengthen the talents of the local creative industry," he added.

SIBU (June 6): The upcoming Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) will introduce a new female mascot to accompany its official mascot 'Engkuli', a clouded leopard, as part of this year's celebration themed 'The Rhythm of Borneo'. BCF organising chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, who is also Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman, said the festival will take place from July 3 to 12 at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 and 2 here. 'First introduced as the official mascot last year, Engkuli returns this year to continue promoting the rich natural and cultural heritage of Borneo,' he told a press conference yesterday. He added that the mascot also plays an important role in raising awareness of endangered species, particularly those native to Borneo. A highlight of this year's festival will be the creation of a mini cultural village at Sibu Town Square Phase I, aimed at offering visitors a rich and immersive experience of Sarawak's diverse cultural traditions, architecture, and way of life, particularly those of ethnic communities. The carnival, he said, embraces three key elements – traditional culture and music, the rhythm of nature and identity, and tourism. 'This year's BCF will feature a variety of cultural performances representing the Dayak, Malay-Melanau, Chinese, and Lun Bawang communities, among others,' he said. Additionally, the festival will welcome special guest performers from West Java, Indonesia and Delhi, India, who will showcase their unique cultural heritage. The Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, is expected to officiate the opening ceremony on July 4. The guest of honour for the closing ceremony on July 12 will be Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. BCF borneo cultural festival clouded leopard Engkuli female mascot

Chinese travel more during Dragon Boat holiday but spending lags
China's Dragon Boat Festival took place from May 31 to June 2, 2025 and was celebrated throughout the country with local dragon boat races. (EPA Images pic) HONG KONG : Chinese people travelled more over the three-day Dragon Boat holiday this year, but spending remained below pre-pandemic levels, government data showed today, indicators that are closely watched as barometers of consumer confidence. Consumption in the world's second-largest economy has suffered amid sputtering growth and a prolonged property crisis, with uncertainty from the US-China trade war also weighing on consumer confidence. The latest data painted a mixed picture for China's consumer economy. Tourists took an estimated 119 million domestic journeys from Friday to Monday, up 5.7% from the same holiday period last year, according to the tourism and culture ministry. Overall spending over the period rose to ¥42.73 billion (US$5.94 billion, a year-on-year increase of 5.9%, but the average amount spent per traveller was a little under ¥360 (US$50), according to Reuters calculations, remaining stubbornly below 2019 levels of around ¥410 per trip. The annual festival took place from May 31 to June 2 this year and is celebrated throughout the country with local dragon boat races. Many people take the opportunity to have short holidays, crowding train stations and airports around the country. Overall, more than 653.7 million inter-regional trips across all regions in China, which include tourist trips, were made during the three-day holiday, up 2.5% year-on-year, state media Xinhua reported today, and road travel was up 2.4% from last year with 597.3 million trips recorded. Cross-border journeys rose 2.7% to 5.9 million, with 231,000 foreign nationals entering the country visa-free during the holiday. China has been expanding its visa policy, with citizens of 43 countries granted visa-free access, while visa-free transit for up to 240 hours in China is available for 54 countries. Chinese also boosted spending on entertainment over the holiday, with cinema box office revenue reaching ¥460 million (US$63.9 million), surpassing last year's ¥384 million, according to data from online ticketing platform Maoyan. Tom Cruise's latest movie 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' topped charts, and generated ¥228 million, half of the total revenue during the holiday period, which was seen as a positive indicator for the upcoming summer season.

MOU with Boseong county marks new chapter in cultural ties, says Bangkuai
KOTA KINABALU: The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Sabah's Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry and Boseong County, South Korea, marks a meaningful step towards building deeper cultural ties and fostering mutual understanding, says Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. The state Assistant Tourism Minister further described the collaboration as a people-focused partnership, adding the timing of the agreement made it especially significant. The MOU was inked during a welcoming dinner held in conjunction with the Kaamatan Festival in Kota Kinabalu on Friday (May 31). It was signed by the ministry's deputy permanent secretary I Mary Malangking and Boseong County deputy governor Seo Hyung Bin, and witnessed by Bangkuai, who is also the Sabah Tourism Board chairman, alongside the Culture and Tourism Bureau of Boseong County director-general, Rho Joung Yi. 'This partnership is about people. It is about building connections and sharing stories. Signing this MOU during the Kaamatan Festival makes it all the more special. 'With this year's theme, Kaamatan for All, we are eager to share our celebration with the world, and it is an honour to welcome our friends from Boseong to be part of it,' he said. Bangkuai highlighted Sabah's recent participation in the Green Tea Festival in Boseong as a valuable cultural exchange, adding that the warm welcome and chance to learn about Korean tea culture were deeply appreciated and reflective of the spirit of mutual respect. With direct flights between Kota Kinabalu and South Korea, he believes the collaboration could lead to more exchanges in the form of cultural performances, reciprocal visits and tourism promotions. As part of this cultural exchange, a Boseong cultural troupe is scheduled to perform during the Kaamatan Festival grand finale at the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association's Hongkod Koisaan in Penampang. 'This will allow Sabahans to experience the vibrancy of Boseong's cultural heritage, just as we hope to one day bring the Kaamatan Festival to Boseong,' Bangkuai added.
