India saw industrial silver demand rise by 4% in 2024: World Silver Survey

Fashion Network22-04-2025

India's industrial silver demand rose by 4% in 2024, according to the World Silver Survey 2025 released by the Silver Institute. The growth placed India second, following China, underscoring the country's expanding role in global silver consumption, particularly across manufacturing and jewellery fabrication.
Global industrial demand reached a record 680.5 million ounces last year, supported by increased use of green technologies and AI-driven applications, according to the World Silver Survey. India's contribution was notable amid this wider trend, reflecting its growing manufacturing base, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council reported on its website.
Jewellery fabrication also saw a 3% global rise to 208.7 million ounces, with India accounting for the majority of the gains. The increase was linked to lower silver import duties, robust rural economic activity, and stronger demand for higher purity silver jewellery.
Investment demand in India surged in 2024, with coin and bar purchases rising by 21%, in contrast to a decline globally. The report attributes this growth to bullish investor sentiment and supportive import policies. However, silverware demand in India weakened, contributing to a 2% global decline to 54.2 million ounces, as high prices affected consumer interest in the gifting segment.
Despite global mine production slightly increasing by under 1% to 819.7 million ounces, the silver market recorded a fourth consecutive structural deficit, totalling 148.9 million ounces. The report warned of trade-related risks in 2025, though strong safe-haven interest could sustain demand.

India confident of securing swift bilateral trade agreement with US

Indian officials are confident that the country is on track to become the first nation to finalise a bilateral trade agreement with the United States under Washington's new trade framework. During negotiations, US treasury secretary Scott Bessent said that India's low tariffs, limited non-tariff barriers, and transparent regulatory systems position it ahead of other countries in concluding the deal. The development comes ahead of the expiry of a 90-day suspension on proposed 26% reciprocal tariffs on Indian exports, set for July 8 2025, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council reported on its website. The agreement is expected to cover 19 chapters, including tariffs, digital trade, customs procedures, and regulatory standards, The Economic Times reported. Negotiations began in Washington, US on April 23, led by chief negotiator Rajesh Agarwal, additional secretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during a recent US visit, had reiterated India's aim to conclude the first phase of the deal by autumn. The US is seeking broader access in sectors such as energy and defence, while India is pushing for greater entry for its exports, particularly textiles, leather, and gems and jewellery. With bilateral trade reaching $129 billion in 2024, both nations are targeting an increase to $500 billion by 2030. Negotiations are still underway.

Mumbai International Airport to launch hand-carriage jewellery exports on May 1

Mumbai International Airport will begin hand-carriage jewellery export operations on May 1 and the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council has heralded the move as a significant step forward for India's gem and jewellery industry. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs formalised the process through Circular No. 09/2025-Customs, issued on March 28, allowing the import and export of jewellery via personal carriage. Ahead of the rollout, a successful mock drill was conducted on April 24 by the Bharat Diamond Bourse, BVC, Precious Cargo Customs Clearance Centre, Airport Customs, and GJEPC, the traders' body announced on its website. The exercise, overseen by Roopesh Sukumaran, additional commissioner of customs at PCCCC, involved the GJEPC's secretariat acting as an exporter in a simulated passenger scenario. The GJEPC announced that its consistent engagement with stakeholders has played a key role in bringing this initiative to fruition. The Directorate General of Systems is expected to release an advisory shortly, after which Mumbai Customs will issue the final Standard Operating Procedure for hand carry exports. This development is expected to support smaller exporters and new entrants, offering greater ease and flexibility in accessing global markets, according to the GJEPC. The GJEPC has also set up a dedicated office at the airport to assist members with the new process.
