Bursa Malaysia Stays In Red, Selling Pressure Seen In Selected Heavyweights
KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia stayed in the red at mid-afternoon with selling pressure led by transportation and logistics, and technology counters.
At 3.06 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) fell 5.67 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 1,529.71 from Friday's close of 1,535.38.
The benchmark index opened 0.95 of-a-point higher at 1,536.33.
Market breadth was negative with 610 decliners and 244 gainers, 454 counters were unchanged, 1,122 untraded and 42 suspended.
Turnover stood at 2.29 billion shares valued at RM983.51 million.
Among heavyweights, Maybank was flat at RM9.88, and Public Bank gained two sen to RM4.42. Meanwhile, Tenaga, CIMB and IHH were two sen lower at RM13.98, RM6.92 and RM6.88, respectively.
As for active stocks, Harvest Miracle, Sapura Energy and Velesto were flat at 18 sen, four sen and 16.5 sen, respectively, while Tanco Holdings added 1.5 sen to 99 sen, and Thriven Global bagged one sen to 9.5 sen.
On the index board, the FBM Emas Index lost 49.63 points to 11,424.42, the FBMT 100 Index shaved 46.64 points to 11,186.45, and the FBM ACE Index was down 49.07 points to 4,566.87.
The FBM Emas Shariah Index decreased 69.97 points to 11,356.24 and the FBM 70 Index tumbled 88.52 points to 16,261.73.

KL International Book Fair: Platform for foreign publishers to enter local market
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (KLIBF) 2025 serves as an important platform for foreign publishers to enter the local market and attract Malaysian readers. Maria Mahat, co-founder of Ungu Pen, a Singapore-based publisher, shared that her company's participation in the fair served to introduce Malaysian readers to her company's offerings and allowed them to build closer relationships. She also said that the books her company publishes focus on children, and are come with unique features such as the use of dyslexia-friendly fonts and digital elements such as animation, songs and augmented reality (AR), which make reading more interactive and fun. Unggu Creative founder, Dr Noridah Kamari said that she decided to join the fair for the first time this year to introduce her books to Malaysian readers and form closer ties with local writers and readers. 'We have attended KLIBF as visitors before, this is our first year as an exhibitor. We want to test the market and see how well Singapore books are accepted by readers here. 'Our focus isn't just to sales, but more towards building a social network with readers and writers, especially from Malaysia. This is because Malaysian writers are involved in our publications, such as the Kayu Api magazine that features their works,' she said. Meanwhile, Muhammad Yusuf from Indonesian publisher Gema Insani said this year was the third time his company joined the fair, and they were sharing a booth with two other publishers from home. 'We are sharing a booth together with Pustaka Al-Kautsar and Gulalibooks and we believe that the potential of the Malaysian market is big with the positive response from chidlren, students and adults. 'The books we carry, include those by famous icon Buya Hamka, historical comics and children's books, match the interest of readers here,' he said. This year's book fair bears the theme 'Buku: Membaca, Memimpin' and ends today after starting on May 23, with over 1,000 exhibition booths by almost 300 local and foreign publishers.

Books are a source of true knowledge, not social media, says Anwar
Anwar delivering his speech at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 on June 1. – Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is urging Malaysians to read more, lamenting a less-than-ideal reading culture in the country. "Reading has not yet become a culture in our country, and that to me is disheartening. When we speak of a Madani nation, it is one that is rooted in conviction and love for knowledge," he said. How can we claim to love knowledge if we only rely on speeches, opinions... sometimes filled with insults but not grounded in knowledge? "Reading just four lines or listening to two-minute rants on social media and forming conclusions, this world is challenging and it demands individuals with deep knowledge," he said during his speech at the closing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2025 here on Sunday (June 1). Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka director-general Dr Hazami Jahari and PBAKL 2025 organising chairman Mohd Khair Ngadiron. The prime minister, however, expressed optimism that the reading culture could be cultivated, noting that the PBAKL 2025, which began on May 23, had received an encouraging response, recording a total of 1.8 million visitors. Citing the success of developed nations, Anwar said such countries advanced because their people possessed deep knowledge and understanding. "Look at developed countries – none have progressed while lacking knowledge," he said. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said that efforts to elevate Malaysia as a great nation must be anchored in building a knowledgeable society that values a reading culture. He said that in the pursuit of success, there remain political leaders, professionals, technocrats and intellectuals who overlook the development of culture. "In the next five or ten years, we want to elevate Malaysia as a great nation in our region. To do that, we must be prepared to compete, to work and to truly read. "Just look at the political and economic discourse in our country… it is not based on knowledge or reading. It is driven by sentiment, anger, hatred, judgment... even religion is turned into a platform (for political gain)," he said. The Prime Minister challenged students, influencers and parents to promote the strengthening of intellectual foundations to realise the goal of uplifting the nation's stature. PBAKL, themed 'Buku: Membaca, Memimpin' (Books: Read, Lead), concluded on Sunday, offering a wide variety of events and is regarded as one of the largest book fairs in Southeast Asia. – Bernama

Malaysia shares 5G direction, gives focus on online security at Tokyo event, says Fahmi
TOKYO: Malaysia has shared its experience and direction in implementing dual 5G networks with countries in the Asia Pacific region through its participation in the Asia Pacific Telecommunity Ministerial Meeting (APT-MM) 2025, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi, who is leading the country's delegation to APT-MM for the first time from May 30 to 31, said that at the same time, focus was also given to efforts to address online security issues that are a challenge for many countries, as well as the National Digital Network (Jendela) infrastructure programme. "(This) meeting can certainly provide an opportunity for us to bring and show other countries what we have achieved through the programmes and ideas we have. "Our experience in implementing the 5G network first as a single network, then as a dual network and our experience implementing large projects such as Jendela as well as the project point of presence," he told Bernama, here. Fahmi also stressed that there is a need for regulatory bodies from APT member countries to emphasise aspects of online supervision and security, including online gambling and cyber fraud issues in the region. "One of the ideas I put forward is the need for senior officers to meet every year, and it is appropriate to hold a workshop for countries in the Asia Pacific region to state the problems faced and how these issues are resolved. "Perhaps we can share our experiences, lessons, solutions that have been implemented, which can be adopted by other countries," he explained. Also held in conjunction with this meeting were a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Asia Pacific countries, as well as international organisations responsible for the telecommunications industry. During this APT-MM 2025, Fahmi held bilateral meetings with delegations from host Japan, Indonesia, Fiji, China, Iran, Australia, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the GSM Association (GSMA). According to Fahmi, there is a need for agencies such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to closely examine the legal aspects and implementation of efforts to regulate online safety, as is done by Australia. "We have conveyed to Australia, and we hope that a team from Malaysia will be able to go there or hold online discussions so that we can examine and evaluate. "Besides the steps they have taken, there are things that we can learn to consider, to see if they are suitable to be implemented in Malaysia," he said. Meanwhile, Malaysia also expressed its intention to continue its membership as a council member in the ITU for the 2027-2030 session. "We have also conveyed to the ministers, counterparts that I have held bilateral meetings with and we hope that friends of Malaysia will be able to support our presence in ITU Council," he added. The APT-MM 2025 edition also saw the launch of the 'Tokyo Statement 2025', which emphasises six priorities: digital connectivity, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, trust and security, digital inclusion and capacity building, environmental sustainability, and regional and international cooperation. Themed "Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific', APT-MM 2025 brings together 31 member countries and 19 affiliates comprising governments, regulators and private agencies from the Asia-Pacific region. - Bernama
