Ben Foster explains why Bryan Mbeumo could reject Man Utd transfer
Ben Foster has warned Manchester United that Bryan Mbeumo could turn them down in favour of a move to Tottenham if he has genuine ambitions of becoming a 'better footballer' and 'being a part of something'.
Mbeumo enjoyed an outstanding individual season with Brentford last term, notching 20 goals and seven assists to help the club to a tenth-placed finish in the Premier League.
But speculation is mounting that Mbeumo could be set for a big-money summer transfer away from the Gtech Community Stadium after six years with the Bees, as both United and Spurs – the two Europa League finalists – battle it out for his services.
United have held advanced talks with both Mbeumo's camp and Brentford over a proposed switch to Old Trafford – and the Cameroon international is reportedly keen to swap south London for Manchester.
The latest of the Red Devils' two bids for Mbeumo is understood to be worth in the region of £60m, with the forward in line to make in excess of £200,000-a-week at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, United may not have it all their way this summer given Thomas Frank has told Daniel Levy he would like Mbeumo to come with him from Brentford if, as expected, he replaces Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham's new head coach.
'It's not exactly a rock and a hard place, is it?!' ex-United and England goalkeeper Foster said of Mbeumo's two potential options on Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast.
'It's like five-star and six-star [hotel]… am I going for a swimming pool in my room or having to just go to the top floor for the swimming pool? It's still pretty nice!
'If you want to be part of something that's going to make you probably a better footballer, work hard and be part of a team, then go to Spurs with Thomas Frank.'
Tottenham have a significant bargaining chip that United cannot offer this summer after beating the Red Devils in the Europa League final to secure Champions League qualification next season.
But Foster believes Mbeumo could still be tempted by the Red Devils should he base his decision on financial gain rather than purely footballing matters.
He added: 'If you are happy picking up your wages, knowing that there's going to be an awful lot more pressure, a lot more eyes on you, a lot more judgement… but with their record in the last couple of years, failure is kind of just part of what they do… then you'd just go to Manchester United.'
Discussions are expected to rumble on between Spurs and Frank over the coming days, with Brentford in line to make around £10m in compensation should the Dane depart.
According to Foster, Frank should be ready to be a far more subservient manager should he agree to work under Levy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
'My big problem with Thomas Frank going to Spurs is nothing to do with Thomas Frank, it's Daniel Levy,' Foster warned the Brentford head coach.
'It works fantastically at Brentford with Thomas Frank. Same as it is at Brighton, whoever the manager is, it works fantastically.
'He is the manager of that football club. He runs it, he knows who is coming in and going out, they've got systems, back-up systems, players in the pipeline, the scouting system looks to be fantastic.
'But if you go to Spurs, you don't get a say in any of that. He doesn't get to do any of that, he doesn't get to control it. Daniel Levy is the guy that controls all of that.
'He will get very little say so he won't be the manager at Spurs that he is at Brentford.'

Palace co-owner John Textor would sell shares for Europa League chance
The American, whose Eagle Football Group owns 43 per cent of Palace, has imperilled the club's chance of a first-ever European campaign owing to his involvement with Ligue 1 side Lyon, but is ready to offload his stake to his fellow co-owners in order to bring the saga to an end. UEFA does not allow clubs with the same ownership to compete in the same European competitions in a season. As well as his stake in Palace, the 59-year-old has a controlling stake in the French club, also via Eagle Football. However it is also reported that the European governing body does not consider Textor's influence at Selhurst Park to be decisive and is leaning towards allowing the club into the Europa League regardless. The PA news agency understands no formal decision is likely on Palace's fate until the end of June. Textor has previously spoken of his frustration at how little influence his stake entitles him to, over football matters. Victory for Oliver Glasner's side over Manchester City in last month's FA Cup final gave them their first major trophy and with it a first crack at Europe. However, Nottingham Forest have since written to UEFA to challenge Palace's Europa League spot and in the hope of taking their place. Forest's owner Evangelos Marinakis, who also owns Greek side Olympiacos, placed his shares in the club in a blind trust before the governing body's March 1 deadline, anticipating Nuno Espirito Santo's side's European qualification. At present Forest, who finished seventh in last season's Premier League, are set to enter the Conference League but would take Palace's Europa League place, should they be deemed ineligible.

Marseille reach ‘agreement in principle' to sign England midfielder Angel Gomes
The former Manchester United youngster is set to become a free agent when his contract with another French side in Lille expires at the end of this month. The 24-year-old could also be joined by Burnley's CJ Egan-Riley at the Stade Velodrome after the Clarets confirmed the defender had rejected the offer of a new deal at Turf Moor. His performances have since earned him four England caps. He had been linked with West Ham and Tottenham but has opted for Marseille, where he will link up with another former United player in Mason Greenwood. A statement from Marseille read: 'Olympique de Marseille announces that it has reached an agreement in principle with Angel Gomes regarding the arrival of the English international midfielder at the club.' Egan-Riley, who is a graduate of Manchester City's youth programme, impressed as Burnley secured promotion back to the Premier League last season but was also out of contract this summer. The Lancashire side were keen for the 22-year-old to stay but have accepted he wishes to move on. They confirmed the centre-back's departure in a statement which referred to him joining an unnamed Ligue 1 club. It has been widely claimed that is Marseille. The statement added: 'Burnley Football Club can confirm that it has been informed by the representatives of CJ Egan-Riley that the England U21 international defender has now formally rejected the club's offer of a significant long-term contract with the club. 'Despite the club's commitment to securing CJ's long-term future and the substantial investment offered, CJ has made the decision to pursue an opportunity in France.'
