Dubai to construct 55 mosques, offer Friday sermons in English

In a significant move ahead of Ramadan, Dubai has announced the construction of 55 new mosques, alongside an expansion of Friday sermon translations into English across 70% of mosques in the emirate.
The Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) revealed these plans in its latest report on the Qualitative Achievements of the Mosque Affairs Sector in 2024, outlining a vision to integrate Islamic architectural heritage with modern sustainability solutions.
Last year, 24 mosques were inaugurated at a cost of Dh172 million, accommodating 13,911 worshippers. Now, an investment of Dh475 million is being made to construct 55 additional mosques, which will collectively accommodate 40,961 worshippers. To further support this growth, 54 new plots have been designated for future mosque construction, ensuring widespread accessibility.
Additionally, the department is preparing a "Mosque Guide", aimed at achieving a 7-star rating for sustainability in mosques.
Dubai has been making strides in eco-friendly mosque construction. In 2024, the emirate opened its first self-sustaining mosque, which cost Dh18.15 million and accommodates 500 worshippers. This mosque helped reduce the carbon footprint of mosques in Dubai by 5%, surpassing initial targets.
Looking ahead, Dubai has also begun work on the UAE's first 3D-printed mosque, set to open in 2026, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in technology-driven urban development. However, no updates were provided on the world's first floating mosque, originally announced in 2023 with an estimated cost of Dh55 million.
Ahead of Ramadan, Dubai has already inaugurated two new mosques. The Ibrahim Ali Al Gergawi Mosque in Mirdif, covering 2,226 square metres, accommodates 544 worshippers. Similarly, the Ata Al-Rahman Mosque in Al Barsha (Arjan), built over 1,275 square metres, accommodates 504 worshippers and includes modern prayer facilities for both men and women.
IACAD also revealed that over Dh50 million has been raised through donations, while efforts to enhance the localisation of mosque architecture are ongoing in collaboration with the American University's School of Architecture.
With these initiatives, Dubai is set to enhance its religious infrastructure, ensuring sustainable, inclusive, and technologically advanced places of worship.

The Imam emphasised Islam's fundamental pillars—prayer (salah), fasting (sawm), almsgiving (zakat), and pilgrimage (Hajj)—urging believers to uphold virtues such as patience, modesty, truthfulness, and gratitude. He called for kindness toward parents, neighbours, orphans, widows, and the underprivileged, warning against spiritual and moral dangers including gossip (gheebah), religious innovation (bid'ah), and Satan's deception. 'Good and evil are not the same,' he said. 'Responding to harm with goodness can turn enemies into friends.' The Imam also reaffirmed belief in all prophets, emphasising that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a mercy to all of humanity, with his coming foretold in earlier scriptures. In a poignant moment, Sheikh Humaid prayed for the suffering people of Palestine, calling on Muslims to support the oppressed, feed the hungry, and give generously in alms. His words come amid ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in the region. Expressing deep appreciation to the Saudi leadership, the Imam commended the Kingdom's efforts in organising and facilitating the pilgrimage for millions of worshippers. Following the sermon, pilgrims began their journey to Muzdalifah, situated between Arafat and Mina, where they will spend the night collecting pebbles for the symbolic stoning of the devil—scheduled for Friday, as the Hajj continues.

SECP study outlines strategic roadmap reshaping Takaful sector
ISLAMABAD: The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has published a comprehensive study titled 'Future of Takaful in Pakistan – A Diagnostic Study,' which assesses the current landscape of the Takaful sector, and outlines a strategic roadmap reshaping the Takaful sector in Pakistan. The study provides a detailed analysis of the Takaful sector's performance, market share trends, and comparison with conventional insurance, while highlighting the evolution of the regulatory framework since the introduction of Takaful in Pakistan in 2005. It also benchmarks Pakistan's Takaful sector against international markets, including Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Indonesia. Despite being part of the insurance sector for nearly two decades, Takaful currently constitutes only around 12% of the total insurance contributions in Pakistan. The study identifies key challenges impeding the sector's growth, such as limited public awareness, trust deficits in governance, inadequate product positioning, human resource constraints, regulatory gaps, and limited domestic Retakaful capacity. Recognizing the broader shift toward an Islamic financial the study proposes a series of targeted policy recommendations and action points to support this transition, including regulatory reforms, awareness initiatives, and stakeholder collaboration. Tump assistant commissioner abducted from near Tigranabad, Balochistan
Armed men abducted Tump Assistant Commissioner Hanif Noorzai on Wednesday morning near Tigranabad as he was traveling with his family to Quetta, according to local sources. Eyewitnesses report that between six to eight armed individuals stopped his official vehicle, took him away at gunpoint, and fled with the car. His wife, driver, and official gunman were left at the site and remain unharmed. The incident has prompted a swift response from security forces, who have launched a large-scale search operation in the area. Snap-checking has begun along Zubaida Jalal Road and nearby routes, while intelligence-based efforts are being used to track the abductors. The abduction of a senior government officer has raised concerns over the safety of civil servants in Balochistan, particularly in the Makran region. Authorities have not yet identified those responsible, and no group has claimed responsibility as of now. Efforts to locate and safely recover Assistant Commissioner Noorzai are ongoing. Earlier this week, seven terrorists allegedly affiliated with the India-backed group Fitna al-Hindustan were killed in two separate operations in Balochistan on June 2, 2025. Earlier, the federal government had officially designated all terrorist groups operating in Balochistan as 'Fitna al Hindustan', accusing India of sponsoring a proxy war through these outfits. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior, the move stems from 'the involvement of some organizations and groups in terrorist activities in Balochistan, which are detrimental to Islamic faith, the sovereignty of Pakistan, and its customary traditions'. The notification further stated that the new designation is intended to reflect 'the true nature and ideology' of these groups and their 'nefarious designs' sponsored by India. 'All government entities are directed to start the above practice immediately,' the notification said, underscoring a concerted effort to reframe the narrative around insurgent violence in the province. The announcement came after Islamabad accused India of escalating indirect aggression after what he described as its defeat in a recent security operation dubbed "Marka-e-Haq'.
