Cate Blanchett steps out in bizarre mermaid-themed outfit at Serpentine Gallery Summer Party in London
Cate Blanchett turned more than a few heads this week when she stepped out for the Serpentine Gallery Summer Party in London on Tuesday evening. Cate, who co-hosted the event, was joined by a litany of stars including Rebel Wilson, Lily Allen, and Kelly Osbourne for the gallery fundraising soirée. Normally known for her elegant sense of style, the Oscar-winning Australian actress, 56, went for a unique, mermaid-inspired outfit for the occasion. She wore a distinctive, seashell-encrusted top from Dilara Fındıkoğlu's Fall 2025 ready-to-wear collection. The eccentric garment featured a corset-like, structural bodice that was festooned with shells of all shapes and sizes, and a high, choker neck. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The eye-catching piece comes from a collection aptly titled, Venus From Chaos. Keeping the nautical theme going, Cate also wore a pale purple skirt that jutted out at the knee, much like a mermaid's tail. Cate finished her look with a pair of pointed-toe pumps with tulle embellishment. Choosing to let her outfit do most of the talking, Cate dialled back on the accessories, save for a pair of classic diamond earrings. She also wore a light rose shade on her lips, and carried a pair of white framed sunglasses. The Blue Jasmine star was happy to pose up a storm, beaming broadly as she showed off her showstopping attire. It comes after Cate took a swipe at Donald Trump's controversial plan to slap 100 per cent tariffs on films made outside the United States. She revealed that despite being one of the most in-demand stars, she had barely filmed on American soil throughout her 30-year career. The eccentric garment featured a corset-like structural bodice that was festooned with shells of all shapes and sizes and a high, choker neck Speaking at the National Portrait Gallery in London at the weekend, Cate also insisted that filmmaking thrived on its multiculturalism. Cate, who lives in the UK with her playwright husband, Andrew Upton, declared: 'Hollywood, such as it is, is a chimera. 'The number of times I've worked on American terra firma, I could probably count on one hand. Invariably, you will shoot out of country.' She went on to point out that her breakout film Elizabeth in 1998 - in which she played Queen Elizabeth I - came from a blend of different nationalities. She said: 'Queen Elizabeth was played by an Australian [Cate], directed by a man from Bollywood [Shekhar Kapur], filmed in the UK. That's the reality of how films are made.' Her comments come a month after the US President announced his plans to impose steep tariffs on foreign-made films in a bid to 'make movies American again'. The move has sent shockwaves through the international film industry and raised fears about the future of global collaboration. Cate, who holds American citizenship but says she can't vote there, made clear that her creative loyalties have never been dictated by geography. She said: 'I've thought as much about the Chinese and Indian film industries as I have about Hollywood. The Australian industry, where I come from, is small by scale, but culturally it was incredibly rich when I was growing up.' The actress, who is also a UNHCR goodwill ambassador, said that working internationally has always been part of the appeal. 'If you have the chance to travel and work in other cultures, why wouldn't you?' she asked. Though the mother of four may have conquered the film world, she also admitted she never intended to become an actor at all, and had actively tried to stem her passion. Cate confessed: 'I tried everything I could to stop doing it. I came [to the UK] thinking I wanted to go into restoration. I studied economics and fine art and thought I'd get a real job. 'But I kept performing - and eventually I went to drama school to try and get rid of it. But it still persisted.'

Huge Hollyoaks star 'QUITS show after two years - and will film final scenes for explosive exit'
A huge Hollyoaks star has reportedly quit the show after just 18 months. Rita Simons, 48, best known for playing EastEnders iconic Roxy Mitchell, joined Hollyoaks in early 2024 as gangster Warren Fox's long-lost ex Marie Fielding. Since her arrival, she's been at the heart of some of the soap's most explosive plots, particularly those involving her villainous sons Abe (Tyler Conti) and Arlo (Dan Hough). Now, Rita has reportedly made the decision to leave the show, with a dramatic exit storyline set to air later this year. A source told The Sun: 'Rita has absolutely loved every second of her time at Hollyoaks and it wasn't an easy decision. 'She moved her entire life to Liverpool two years ago to throw herself into the show, and it's been a great adventure, but the pull of home is just too much. 'London has been calling her, and it's proved difficult to balance a job she loves and her life in London.' The insider added that Channel 4 bosses have been supportive of her decision and have crafted a powerful exit for her character. While Rita is sad to go, she's said to be 'excited' to film the emotional scenes. Rita is expected to shoot her final episodes this summer, with her character's departure airing in the autumn. MailOnline has contacted Channel 4 and Rita's representative for comment. Meanwhile, Hollyoaks is gearing up to mark its 30th anniversary this October with a huge month of celebrations. Show boss Hannah Cheers teased that a signature Hollyoaks stunt is already in the works as she claimed you can't do a Hollyoaks commemoration 'without some kind of spectacle'. She also revealed a huge battle between two Hollyoaks titans will take centre stage for October. Having recently returned from the dead to the village after 12 years, Clare Devine is back, and she's set to clash against serial killer Jez Blake in the run-up to the big anniversary. Rita made a striking entrance into Hollyoaks in early 2024 as Marie Fielding, the turbulent mother of Joel Dexter. Her debut came during a dramatic fight at a gender reveal party, where she crashed into the McQueen family's world by stealing Mercedes' dress and stirring up longstanding tensions. From the outset, her character was announced as a catalyst for chaos - promising trouble across multiple storylines and hinting at hidden motives rooted in her return from prison. Over her time on the show, Marie became embroiled in some of Hollyoaks' most explosive plots: secretive romances (including a complicated connection with Tony Hutchinson), family reckonings, and a dramatic motorcycle crash storyline.
