Last Updated:
Kamal Haasan and Ayushmann Khurrana join Ariana Grande, Jeremy Strong as Oscar Academy invitees from 60+ countries.
Indian cinema icons Kamal Haasan and Ayushmann Khurrana have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the prestigious body behind the Oscars. They are part of an illustrious group of 534 individuals from around the world, including global names like Ariana Grande, Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Fernanda Torres, Kieran Culkin and Mikey Madison.
This diverse and talented group has been recognised for their remarkable contributions to the world of filmmaking and storytelling. The Academy revealed that this year's invitees represent 60 countries and territories outside the United States, continuing its efforts to globalise and diversify its membership.
'We are thrilled to welcome this esteemed class of artists, technologists and professionals into the Academy," said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang. 'This year's class embodies the diversity and global breadth of today's film community, and their inclusion will continue to enrich the Academy's mission and work."
Invitees who accept the invitation will become part of one of the Academy's 19 branches or will be enrolled as Associates — a special membership tier for those who've made significant industry contributions but won't hold Oscar voting rights.
Kamal Haasan, a veteran actor and filmmaker with decades of groundbreaking work across Indian cinema, was last seen in Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam. Despite high expectations, the film received mixed reviews and its box office performance was underwhelming. Critics pointed out a lacklustre narrative and weak character development.
Ayushmann Khurrana, known for his content-driven choices, is currently working on two exciting projects. He'll be seen next in Thama, a romantic horror comedy from the Maddock Horror Universe, releasing in October 2025. He's also filming an untitled spy comedy opposite Sara Ali Khan, produced by Karan Johar and directed by Aakash Kaushik.

Vishnu Manchu's Kannappa takes lead over Kajol's Maa in morning shows
Vishnu Manchu's mythological action film 'Kannappa' has taken an early lead at the Indian box office, earning ₹1.36 crore in morning shows. Kajol's mythological horror film 'Maa' opened with ₹31 lakh. 'Kannappa' is attracting audiences with its grand scale and star power, including Prabhas and Mohanlal. 'Maa,' targeting horror fans, hopes for evening show growth. It's a clash of genres and star power at the box office today, as two contrasting films — Vishnu Manchu's mythological action epic Kannappa and Kajol 's mythological horror Maa — hit theatres across India. And going by the initial figures, Kannappa has taken a clear lead in the morning shows. Exclusive | Kajol CANDID On Horror Fears and Son Yug's Voice Debut In 'Karate Kids: Legends' Early box office data shared by Sacnilk reveals that Kannappa has managed to pull in Rs 1.36 crore from it's morning shows, while Maa opened with a comparatively modest Rs 31 lakh in the same time. The significant difference in collections highlights how Kannappa has capitalized on its mass appeal, visual scale, and genre advantage to draw in audiences, particularly in the South Indian circuits along with the presence of names like Prabhas , Mohanlal , Kajal Agawal and Akshay Kumar . . Directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, Kannappa is a large-scale retelling of the legendary Shaivite devotee, with Vishnu Manchu leading the charge. The film's larger-than-life portrayal, mythological themes, and slick production have helped it find strong traction among single-screen audiences and in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. On the other hand, Maa, featuring Kajol in a poignant mother-centric role, has targeted horror genre fanatics. Its intimate narrative, emotional depth, and performance-driven storytelling are geared more toward multiplex viewers and urban family audiences. However, in terms of sheer footfalls, it appears that Maa is facing an uphill battle on day one but given the genre of the film one would expect a major push with evening and night has been directed by Vishal Furia and backed by Ajay Devgn with pivotal roles played by Ronit Bose Roy , Indraneil Sengupta and Kherin Sharma While Kannappa has clearly won the first round in morning shows, the day is yet to end and the word of mouth for both films will kick in from afternoon onwards.. For now, it's Kannappa that has emerged as the early front-runner in this cinematic face-off.

Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Rajinikanth: When reuniting with old directors doesn't always guarantee a 'Nayagan' or 'Mersal'
In the changing landscape of Tamil cinema, stars face a crucial decision in choosing a director for their next film. Reuniting with an old trusted director or teaming up with a new talent? This decision has the power to elevate or derail a star's journey. Both approaches have strengths, but audience expectations, story, and context determine success. The power and pressure of reunions Old alliances create a unique impact in Kollywood. Rajinikanth-Shankar collaborations like 'Sivaji' and 'Enthiran' have been record-breaking box office hits and have captivated generations. The Vijay-Atlee duo delivered 'Theri', 'Mersal,' and 'Bigil', creating a string of hits. But not all old alliances are successful. Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam 's 'Thug Life' failed to make the same impact as 'Nayagan' and faced criticism. This shows that old alliances often come under the pressure of expectations. Fresh director, fresh perspective There is a special charm when teaming up with a new director. Dhanush-Maari Selvaraj's 'Karnan' captivated audiences with a strong village story. Similarly, Rajinikanth-Karthik Subbaraj's 'Petta' impressed the audience by combining the superstar's old charm and new perspective. The vision and experience of a new director give an actor the opportunity to create new roles, which can take the star to new heights. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? Teaming up with an old director is a strong friendship and understanding, and it also brings with it the expectations of the fans. But there is also the pressure to surpass previous successes. Meanwhile, the strength of teaming up with a new director is the opportunity to create a new vision, new storytelling opportunities, and an environment that faces new challenges. But there is also the risk of failure. Story matter most In the end, what matters more than which path is best is a good story, strong direction, and the actor's search for innovation. No matter which director you team up with, new or old, only if the story and character are conducive to the actor's development will that partnership create a breakthrough in Tamil cinema. When the needs of the times, the desires of the fans, and the strength of the story come together in one place, a star can use any path to success. 'Even if I work with Vijay or SRK, I treat every film like the first. New ideas matter more than familiarity', said Atlee in a public event post the success of 'Jawan'. 'Fresh stories and fresh teams excite me. It gives a chance to show a different side of myself' said Dhanush when team up with Mari Selvaraj for 'Karnan'. 'Reuniting with old friends like Mani Ratnam feels like going back home. But working with new talents reminds me why I fell in love with acting' said Kamal Haasan about his reunion with Mani Ratnam for 'Thug Life.' 'Kaithi 2': Here's how Lokesh Kanagaraj and makers plan on 'Kaithi's sequel A timeless truth: Good stories build legends In today's era, audiences expect the new and the old equally. Memorable stories, strong visuals, and the hard work of the actors are the key to a film's success. So whatever path a star chooses, it should be one that showcases their individuality and delights their fans. Whether the director is old or new, the core of that collaboration is a good story. A good story is what turns a star, a director, and a film into a memorable story.
