Elephant Hackney: former Manteca chef puts on Italian classics in old Victorian boozer

Elephant Hackney: former Manteca chef puts on Italian classics in old Victorian boozer

Yahoo4 hours ago

Another old East London pub has been reworked into a modern venue serving cocktails and Italian food.
The Elephant's Head, a former Victorian boozer, has been reborn as Elephant Hackney and is the work of Rum Kitchen founder Stevie Thomas and former Manteca sous Francesco Sarvonio.
Sarvonio, Napoli-born, has put together a menu of dishes from the Italian south, with a focus on Neapolitan pizzas (between £12 and £18).
Alongside the pizzas, the up-and-coming chef will be serving the likes of ox cheek croquettes with anchovy mayo, grilled squid with peppers and salsa verde, mozzarella with tomato carpaccio, fried courgette flowers with honey and seafood pastas.
Prices are promising: small plates are around £10 and the most expensive item on the menu is a rib-eye steak at £29.
Thomas, who is also managing director of the Jam House in Birmingham – a jazz parlour and restaurant founded by Jools Holland – has taken inspiration from east London's 'cinematic past' in building the venue.
The pub's crown jewel is a 25-year-old skylight salvaged from a former East End cinema, while the name harks back to an enormous elephant head that once hung in Hackney Pavilion nearby.
David Shrigley prints adorn the walls alongside vintage Italian posters and cocktails include spicy margaritas, espresso martinis, gin fizzes and Negronis.
As for beers on tap, there's a custom Grolsch – nice to see it back on draught – Peroni and local beers from Five Points.
Elephant Hackney will open on July 9 at 43 Lower Clapton Road, E5 0NS; elephanthackney.com

F1 Star Damson Idris Reacts To Simone Ashley's Scenes Being Scrapped

F1 actor Damson Idris has reacted to the news that Simone Ashley's scenes have been cut from the film. Damson stars opposite Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, Kerry Condon and a host of real-life Formula One stars in the new sports drama, which centres around a retired racer who becomes a mentor for a fledgling star in the field. Last week, it was revealed that while Bridgerton star Simone was originally due to appear in F1, her scenes didn't make it into the finished movie, aside from a few shots in which she doesn't speak. Asked for his thoughts on Simone being cut, Damson told BuzzFeed UK: 'First of all, I love Simone, not just as a person, but also as an artist. I think she's stupidly talented.' He then clarified: '[Simone's] role was more of a cameo kind of role. It was sort of a love interest situation that happened. 'But, as with many movies, you know the director's cut. I mean I've been cut out of movies, and these things happen.' Damson added: 'The joy of it is that, I know she's gonna work with not only [F1 director] Joseph Kosinski again, but definitely with me again.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Seasoned (@seasonedbf) Joseph Kosinski told People last week of Simone's absence from F1: 'It happens on every film, where you have to shoot more than you can use. 'There were two or three storylines that ultimately didn't make into the final cut.' He quickly celebrated the former Sex Education star as an 'incredible talent', 'incredible actress' and 'incredible singer', adding that he would 'love to work with her again' in the future. Simone previously told Elle in an interview published earlier this month that her part in F1 was a 'very small' one, but that she was still 'very grateful to be in that movie', describing the filming process as a 'crazy' experience. 28 Years Later Director Danny Boyle Reveals Meaning Behind That Truly Wild Twist Ending Seth Rogen Says Audition Tape For This Box Office Bomb Would 'End My Career' If It Got Out 'People Are Going To See Something They've Never Seen Before': How Pixar's Next Hit Film Was Made

ANDOR Creator Tony Gilroy Reveals Scrapped His James Bond Movie Pitch — GeekTyrant

Tony Gilroy might be best known right now for his work on the Star Wars series Andor , but long before Cassian Andor was trying to take down the Empire, Gilroy was building a different kind of spy story, with The Bourne Identity series. Well, it turns out, he also once had his sights set on yet another iconic spy… James Bond. During a recent appearance on The Playlist's The Rogue Ones podcast, Gilroy dropped some fascinating details about a Bond film he and Steven Soderbergh once pitched. It was an unconventional take that would've shaken-up the Bond franchise in a cool way. 'We wanted to go back to the '60s and do it in black and white and do Carnaby St. and do the whole thing. I thought it was a really swinging idea, like $30 million [budget], but he couldn't get them to… they just wouldn't give anybody control.' A black-and-white Bond film set in the swinging '60s? Lean, stylish, and likely unlike anything we've seen in the franchise before. I could've gotten behind that! But, the idea never made it past the pitch stage, thanks to the franchise's notoriously tight creative grip, especially under the longtime stewardship of Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Gilroy even had a villain ready to go, though he's keeping that one locked in the MI6 vault for now. 'I had a great villain,' he said, refusing to share more. With Amazon now owning MGM and the Bond rights, the landscape is shifting fast. What was a hard 'no' five years ago might now be a real possibility. With Bond 26 still unannounced and names like Denis Villeneuve, Edgar Wright, and Jonathan Nolan being floated, there's all different kinds of ideas that could be explored. Gilroy's not really involved with anything involving Bond right now, but that doesn't mean the door is closed. If Amazon really wants to breathe new life into Bond, letting bold storytellers take creative swings could be the smartest move yet, and that's probably why they won't do it. I have a feeling they are going to play it extremely safe with this franchise. But, I sure would be interesting in seeing a big swing like a monochrome, mod-era Bond thriller with a killer villain. Would you want to see Tony Gilroy take on 007? Let us know what you think.
