Malaysia's Petronas aims for China, Vietnam expansion while seeking long-term LNG supply

BEIJING: Malaysia's Petroliam Nasional, or Petronas, aims to expand its liquefied natural gas sales into markets such as China and Vietnam while also looking to secure more long-term supply from North America and emerging markets, said a company executive.
"As part of our strategic growth plans, Petronas is actively seeking to expand our LNG supply into high-demand markets in Asia, including China and Vietnam," said Shamsairi Ibrahim, vice president, LNG marketing and trading in an email in response to questions from Reuters.
"These regions present significant opportunities due to their robust economic growth and increasing energy needs."
Apart from LNG, Shamsairi said Petronas is aiming to work with China on other lower-carbon energy solutions including renewable energy, hydrogen, green mobility, ammonia, carbon capture and storage and specialty chemicals.
On supply, the Malaysian state energy firm also said it is keen to secure more long-term deals to buy LNG to provide stability and reliability to its customers.
"Petronas is exploring opportunities with sellers from diverse regions, including North America and other emerging markets, to enhance our global supply network and meet the evolving needs of our customers," added Shamsairi.
"We are in communication with several parties to explore mutually beneficial opportunities, including Commonwealth LNG."
Petronas has previously said that its supply from some U.S. contracts could be sold in the spot market to Europe or Asia.
Reuters reported last month that Petronas is in talks with Commonwealth LNG for 1 million tons per annum of the fuel from the U.S. company's facility in Cameron, Louisiana.
Commonwealth LNG said in early May it had signed a 20-year supply deal with a major Asian energy company, but did not name the buyer.
Malaysia was the world's fifth largest LNG exporter in 2024, shipping out 27.98 million metric tons of the chilled fuel last year, according to Kpler data.

Gold gains for the week as US data fuels safe-haven bid

GOLD rose on Friday and was set for weekly gains, as a spate of soft U.S. economic data outweighed initial optimism over U.S. President Donald Trump's call with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, while investors awaited U.S. payroll data. Spot gold was up 0.3% at $3,363.33 an ounce, as of 0548 GMT. Bullion has gained 2.3% for the week so far. U.S. gold futures climbed 0.4% to $3,387. Trump and Xi engaged in a rare leader-to-leader call on Thursday, addressing escalating trade tensions and disputes over critical minerals, though key issues remain unresolved. 'Some of the initial enthusiasm for risk appetite following the Trump-Xi call has started to wear off, which has enabled gold to creep higher,' said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade. The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits increased to a seven-month high last week. Investors are now awaiting U.S. nonfarm payroll data, due at 1230 GMT, after a slew of data throughout this week highlighting labor market softness. Economists polled by Reuters forecast nonfarm payrolls increased by 130,000 jobs in May, while the unemployment rate is expected to remain steady at 4.2%. 'The upcoming NFP release could be the catalyst for a breakout should the data produce a significant miss on either side of expectations,' Waterer said. Federal Reserve policymakers indicated that inflation remains a greater concern than labor market cooling, suggesting a prolonged hold on monetary policy adjustments. Gold, often seen as a safe-haven asset, tends to perform well during economic uncertainty and in low-interest-rate environments. On the physical front, elevated gold prices dampened buying across major Asian hubs this week. Discounts in India hit their highest levels in over a month. Spot silver fell 0.7% to $35.92 per ounce, hovering near a 13-year high, while platinum rose 1.7% to $1,149.85 and palladium was up 0.7% at $1,012.60. All three metals were headed for weekly gains.

China yuan's trade-weighted value falls to near two-year low

SHANGHAI: The Chinese yuan's value against its major trading partners fell close to a two-year low on Friday, reflecting the central bank's efforts to keep it steady versus the US dollar even as other currencies rise sharply. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT The People's Bank of China (PBOC) has been carefully managing its currency, allowing only marginal appreciation against the dollar even as other major and Asian currencies rally against a weakening US currency. The policy, done through keeping the daily official yuan midpoint guidance steady, is expected to protect exporters during an ongoing trade war by offsetting tariffs with better currency conversion rates for their revenues. A steadier yuan will also ensure there is no chaotic rush by corporates and households to sell their nearly US$1 trillion in foreign exchange deposits. While Beijing has said it does not deliberately seek a weaker currency, the currency's passive decline comes at a time of heightened Sino-US tensions for an economy struggling with deflationary pressures and weak domestic demand. BY THE NUMBERS The CFETS yuan index, a gauge that measures the yuan's weighted value versus 25 currencies of trading partners, fell to 95.58 and is down 5.8 per cent year-to-date, according to Reuters calculations based on official data. The yuan has, however, strengthened 1.6 per cent versus the dollar during the same period. The official yuan midpoint has barely changed and is up about 0.05 per cent this year. KEY QUOTES Goldman Sachs estimated that a 10 per cent yuan depreciation in trade-weighted terms could increase goods exports by 5 per cent with a one-quarter lag, equivalent to a an increase of 75-basis-point GDP growth impulse. "A greater than 5 per cent decline in CFETS within five months may be too fast and a further dip below 95 could fuel concerns or even some hostility from other Asian trading partners," Barclays analysts said in a note.

MCA tells govt to define small businesses entitled to LPG

KUALA LUMPUR: The government must specify which micro and small businesses are entitled to use subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). MCA vice-president Datuk Lawrence Low said the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) must define what constitutes a "micro and small-scale food and sales business" amid growing confusion over the enforcement of subsidised LPG use under Ops Gasak. Low said the lack of details had left many traders uncertain and anxious. "Who exactly are these businesses? Are they classified by the volume of LPG they consume, their income levels, or some other benchmark? "Or will enforcement officers be left to make these determinations on the ground during Ops Gasak? The absence of clear criteria invites inconsistency and could result in unfair treatment," he said. Low, who is also chairs MCA's Economic and SME Affairs Committee, added that the confusion was compounded by a letter issued by Petronas, dated April 30, which prohibited the supply of subsidised LPG to commercial premises. "Why hasn't KPDN instructed Petronas to retract this letter? It is the root cause of the uncertainty and pressure being felt by small business owners," he said. The government had launched Op Gasak on May 1 to clamp down on the misuse of susidised LPG cylinders. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali had said household and small businesses could use fewer than three 14kg LPG cylinders at a time without obtaining a scheduled controlled goods permit. Yesterday, Armizan said the exemption for small businesses would remain in effect until amendments to the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021 were finalised.
