Flashback: How Paul McGrath saved Ireland's blushes as Luxembourg almost derailed journey on rocky road to Euro 88

They are the figures from our past that caused us harm, not all of them famous but names that live on in a special chapter of Irish football history. People like Wim Kieft in 1988, Goran Stavrevski in 1999, William Gallas in 2009, Gerson Rodrigues in 2021, scorers of goals which left a deep mark on the Irish psyche.
Armin Krings is almost on that list, omitted only because his goal was a wake-up call for an Irish side on the road to a first major finals and not a fatal blow like Gallas's goal in Paris. Krings only ever scored one goal in his international career with Luxembourg but it had the potential to be a very damaging one for Ireland, as he found the net for in a Euro '88 qualifier against Jack Charlton's team.

What time is Shane Lowry teeing off today at the US Open?

Thursday sees the beginning of the 2025 US Open as Shane Lowry looks to add to his 2019 Open Championship to double his major tally. We are moments away from the action in Oakmont Country Club as the final preparations are being made. Lowry tees off this morning after a decent showing in the Canadian Open last week, which is seen as a curtain-raiser for this tournament. He tees off at 12:40PM Irish time today, and will have a 6:25PM tee time on Friday. His group includes his long-time friend Rory McIlroy, as well as England's Justin Rose. Speaking in the runup to the US Open, the Offaly man said that seeing McIlroy claim the Masters title meant a lot to him, and lit a spark to claim glory for himself in the future. He said: "I have never been more jealous, or more happy, of anyone in my whole life of watching what Rory did at the Masters. "I think it's incredible - for everyone, for him, for Irish golf, for everyone around him. It just puts fire in my belly to kick on and be better than I have been. "I only want to add one more to my name, one of these big ones - and obviously we have Portrush in a few weeks so there's an exciting summer ahead."
