NASCAR takeaways: Is Ryan Blaney or Carson Hocevar the story at Nashville?

NASCAR takeaways: Is Ryan Blaney or Carson Hocevar the story at Nashville?

Yahoo4 days ago

A former NASCAR Cup Series champion led a race-high 139 laps and won for the first time in 2025 Sunday.
And yet, Ryan Blaney wasn't the talk of the Cracker Barrel 400.
That title belonged to Carson Hocevar, who ended Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s night with a hard-racin' bump in Stage 2 and was making hand signals out his window in Stage 3, all while moving from 26th to a runner-up finish at Nashville Superspeedway.

More on him in a moment.
But first, Blaney.
NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Blaney celebrates winning the Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tenn., Sunday, June 1, 2025.
He claimed a Stage 2 victory after qualifying 15th.
'It's nice that it's finally happening,' Blaney said. 'I'm ready to go celebrate.'
Behind him and Hocevar, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano and William Byron recorded top-five finishes.
Here are three takeaways:
1. Ryan Blaney returns to Victory Lane

Blaney had run well recently.
Before a 38th-place finish at Charlotte last week, he tallied four top-fives in five races, with back-to-back thirds at Texas and Kansas. But he had not taken the checkers since the penultimate week of the 2024 playoffs at Martinsville.
'I never gave up hope, that's for sure.' Blaney said. 'We've had great speed all year. It just really hasn't been the best year for us, as far as good fortune. But the (Team Penske No. 12) boys are awesome. They stick with it no matter how it goes. It was great to finish one out tonight.'

The win was his first at Nashville and the 14th of his career.
Blaney closed it out by a margin of 2.83 seconds. Now, he's headed to the playoffs as the ninth driver to clinch a spot so far this season.
Overall, the race featured 18 lead changes and seven cautions. The final 102 laps went off consecutively without a yellow flag.
2. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. warns Carson Hocevar

Uh oh, Carson.
Stenhouse sent the young driver of the No. 77 Spire Motorsports car a warning after Hocevar knocked Stenhouse to the garage with a rear bump while battling for 17th on Lap 106. Stenhouse slid into the wall rear-first.

It resulted in his first DNF of 2025.
'I'd say it's not out of the norm for him, but I definitely wasn't expecting that at that point in the race,' Stenhouse said. 'Bummer for us ... Definitely will have something to do about it at one point.'
Did he plan to talk to Hocevar?
'Oh, I will,' Stenhouse said.
Approach him after the race?
'No, that costs too much money,' Stenhouse said.
When asked about the incident afterward, Hocevar had not yet watched the replay but didn't view it as nefarious.
'I feel like that was just a common move with how big of a run I had, but I didn't see it,' Hocevar said. 'I'm sure he'll want to talk about it. I'll talk about it. We'll look at the replay.'

Meanwhile, he tied his career-best finish of second. He previously reached that spot at Atlanta in February.
Before Sunday, Hocevar had cracked the top 10 only twice this season.
'Hopefully, this is a step in the right direction,' he said.
3. Up next: NASCAR motors to Motor City

Before heading south of the border on Father's Day weekend, NASCAR heads north. Way north, by NASCAR standards, to the Detroit area for a tripleheader weekend.
It begins with an ARCA race Friday, with the Truck Series in a Saturday starring role before Sunday's Firekeepers Casino 400 at Michigan international Speedway. It'll be yet another weekend off for the Xfinity Series, which had a two-week break in May.

Tyler Reddick won last year's race at Michigan, which was host to two Cup Series races a year until 2021.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day makes bold College Football Playoff statement

Expansion could be on the horizon for the College Football Playoff, and Ryan Day is lobbying for more guaranteed Big Ten representation. A 16-team playoff format is gaining traction for 2026 and beyond, and the Ohio State head coach believes his conference should have several automatic spots each year. 'I feel like we deserve at least four automatic qualifiers,' Day told ESPN this week. 'We're in the Big Ten, and we have 18 teams and some of the best programs in the country.' The Buckeyes are coming off a national championship after playing through a 12-team field that featured three other Big Ten teams: Penn State, Indiana and Oregon. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day speaks to the media in April 2025. Getty Images Day hopes that this will be an annual occurrence in a larger bracket. A 16-team model that would feature the top-five conference champions and 11 at-large bids gained support at the SEC spring meetings last week. But, in the format Day supports, both the Big Ten and SEC would each have four auto qualifiers, with the ACC and Big 12 each getting two, and the top Group of Five champion also earning a guaranteed spot. Three at-large spots would round out the field. Day pointed to the fact that the Big Ten added the top programs from the Pac-12 in its recent expansion: USC, Washington, Oregon and UCLA. The College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy on display in January 2025. AP Washington and Oregon were the only two teams from the Pac-12 to have made the CFP during the four-team playoff era. 'You would have had at least a team or two [in the CFP] from out there,' Day said of the original Pac-12. 'So it only makes sense when you have 18 teams, especially the quality of teams that you would have [in] that many teams representing the Big Ten.' For the 2025 season, the playoff will retain its 12-team format, with the top four teams in the final CFP rankings earning first-round byes. That marks a slight change from last season, when the four highest-ranked conference champions received byes.

Even with reminders nearby, Michigan is a chance for Ricky Stenhouse Jr., team to move ahead

BROOKLYN, Mich. — A week after Carson Hocevar's contact wrecked Ricky Stenhouse Jr. at Nashville, they have talked, but the impact of the incident remains. Just look in the garage this weekend at Michigan International Speedway. Their teams share a garage stall, just as they are next to each other in the points standings. Stenhouse said Friday morning on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio that after talking with Hocevar 'I definitely see where he was thinking that he could get to the inside of me before we turned down into the corner (at Nashville). Problem was he didn't.' Nate Ryan, Stenhouse's crew chief, Mike Kelley, spoke with Ryan Sparks, competition director at Spire Motorsports about Hocevar early in the week. Luke Lambert, crew chief for Hocevar, called Kelley this week. 'I don't have disrespect for Carson,' Kelley told NBC Sports on Friday at Michigan. 'I know he's an upcoming talent, and I've been in the sport long enough to know that he is, he's got something special. … I told Luke this on the phone the other night when he called me was it's how you handle yourself after the fact. 'I would have been just as upset if he would have got out and said, 'Man, I'm so sorry I wrecked Ricky.' That's not what I was expecting. 'I was maybe expecting for him to say that he needed to look at it and he would get with Ricky. I would have thought he would have at least called Ricky a lot sooner than he did. But he did call Ricky and they spoke. Ricky called me and said he felt like it was sincere and felt that we could forward from here and they could race.' Dustin Long, As a result of the Nashville incident, Stenhouse fell from 13th to 18th in the standings — and out of a playoff spot — when he finished 39th and scored one point at Nashville. Kyle Busch holds the final playoff spot. Stenhouse trails Busch by six points. Stenhouse is one of five drivers (including Hocevar) outside a playoff spot within 13 points of Busch. 'Our mulligan is gone,' Kelley said. Four of the remaining 11 races in the regular season after Sunday's event at Michigan are at a road or street course. Stenhouse has two top-10 finishes in 43 career Cup road course/street course races. Two of the remaining 11 races in the regular season are at drafting tracks. While all four of Stenhouse's career Cup wins are at such style of tracks, there's also a greater chance to be collected in an incident in those events. That's what makes scoring only one point at Nashville hurt for Stenhouse and his team. Since last year, Stenhouse has averaged 17 points per race at a road or street course. Compare that to the drafting tracks. Since last year, he's averaged 28.7 points at drafting tracks, which includes a win at Talladega. Kelley acknowledges the challenges of road and street courses for the team. 'We don't race on dreams and hopes,' Kelley said. 'We look at our weakest links and try to make them better and try and get the most out of every day. We look at road course races as, 'Look, most of these guys are going to wreck the (expletive) out of each other at the end of this thing. So let's get all the stage points we can in the middle and then we'll capitalize on the finishes at the end.' That's how we look at it and that's how we race it.' Because every point matters. 'We do look at points because the end result for our race team, the end of the season, there are point-specific items that we need to hit and targets and goals that we have,' Kelley said. 'One is top 20 and one is top 25 in (car owner) points because that where NASCAR quits paying (bonuses at the end of the season). All those things matter. 'If someone says what happened to us at Nashville doesn't matter, come see me after Phoenix (at the end of the year). We finished 25th in points by (six) points last year and I think they said that was $600,000. So, if you don't think $600,000 matters to some people, I guarantee you it does. 'But there's also a pride thing. We had done everything we felt like we could do all year long to keep ourselves in position. At weeks we've had decent enough pace to do what we need to do and other weeks Ricky's just done a really good job of managing our car and we've called good races. We were realistically 13th in points last week and had I just averaged 20 points, I'd be 13th in points today. 'Does that get me in (the playoffs)? Probably not, but it keeps me in the game. It keeps me in the thing. My wife explained it to me Tuesday morning about 5 a.m., she said, 'If you would have asked me in January that you were three or four points out of the cutoff 14 races in, would you be happy then?' I said, yeah, for sure. She goes, 'Then don't worry about where you're at now, just keep looking ahead.' So that's all we're doing.' ☎️ "After Carson called me this week, I definitely see where he was thinking." NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps has spoken about his hopes of attracting Brazilian drivers to the sport with the possibility of the country hosting a race in the future. As one of NASCAR's four international series alongside Canada, Mexico, and the Euro Series, Brazil has hosted the NASCAR Brasil Series since 2012, and Phelps is keen to see some of the drivers from the series join either the Craftsman Truck, Xfinity, or Cup Series. During an interview with Phelps explained: "We have a driver who is from Mexico, Daniel Suarez, and that's a great victory for us. Not through our driver development program, [but] we also have Shane Van Gisbergen from New Zealand [who] used to race in Australia. Joey Logano, driver of the #22 Shell Pennzoil Ford, and Erik Jones, driver of the #43 Dollar Tree Toyota, race during the NASCAR Cup Series Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway on June 01, 2025... Joey Logano, driver of the #22 Shell Pennzoil Ford, and Erik Jones, driver of the #43 Dollar Tree Toyota, race during the NASCAR Cup Series Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway on June 01, 2025 in Lebanon, Tennessee. More"We'd like to have drivers from all over the world coming to race with us, in our three national categories, but in particular in our main category, like what Daniel and SVG are doing." He added: "We'd like to have a Brazilian come out of NASCAR Brazil, come and race with us full-time, and, you know, compete for wins and championships. So we're excited about this prospect, I was very impressed with the number of drivers I saw and how fast they were and their abilities, and we're excited about this happening in the future." Phelps was promoted to the newly formed role of NASCAR Commissioner in March. He commented at the time of the announcement: "I'm honored to take this next step in helping to guide NASCAR, the sport I've loved since my father took me to my first race at 5 years old, continue to grow and welcome new fans, competitors and partners that together create some of the most extraordinary moments in sports. "I cannot thank the France family enough for their unwavering commitment to our fans, their steady leadership, and most importantly, their stewardship of stock-car racing since its inception nearly eight decades ago. This sport is truly one of the great American business stories and I'm privileged to continue as part of that legacy – and especially its bright future. "We are thrilled to name Steve Phelps as NASCAR's first Commissioner. His leadership, professionalism and well-earned respect from across the sports industry speak to his unique value for the sport," said NASCAR Chairman & CEO Jim France added. "With more than 50 years of expertise between them, both Steve Phelps and Steve O'Donnell bring tremendous expertise, stability and a commitment to the bold racing innovations that will continue to serve fans, teams and stakeholders for many years to come."
