Sue Bird named first managing director of USA Women's National Team
WNBA legend Sue Bird has been named managing director of the USA Women's National Team, the program announced Thursday.
Bird, 44, will be the first ever to hold the position in the team's nearly half-century-long history. In her new role, she will identify members of the team's coaching staff and players for major international contests. This includes everything from the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles to the program's training camps over the next three years.
'It's a huge honor to be named managing director of USA Basketball's Women's National Team," Bird said in a statement. "Representing the United States has been one of the greatest privileges of my life, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to support the next generation as they carry that legacy on. I'm excited to take on this new role and to work alongside the USA Basketball staff and Board of Directors as we prepare for this upcoming chapter of USA Basketball.'
Team USA is the most dominant program in women's basketball history. The group has 10 Olympic gold medals and 11 world titles and has not lost a game on either stage since 2006.
Bird herself is no stranger to the team's excellence, having won five Olympic gold medals and four World Cup titles. Since debuting at the 2000 Jones Cup, an international basketball tournament that took place in Taipei, Taiwan, Bird has a 162-9 record across more than a dozen different USA Basketball teams.
USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley called Bird "one of the most respected people in the basketball community."
'Having known Sue for many years, I'm confident her leadership and knowledge will be a huge asset to the continued success of our women's national team program," he said in a statement, "and we're excited to have her join us as we head towards the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.'
Outside of the national team, Bird's iconic WNBA career spanned more than two decades.
Drafted No. 1 overall by the Seattle Storm out of Connecticut in 2002, she went on to become a 13-time WNBA All-Star, win four championships and set the record for most career assists.
Bird, who retired in 2022, will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in September.

Steve Clarke insists angry Scotland took it out Liechtenstein as he issues challenge to international new boys
The Scotland boss also hailed Lennon Miller and Ross Doohan as he says goodbye to assistant manager John Carver Steve Clarke praised hat-trick hero Che Adams and admitted his Scotland side took their anger out on Liechtenstein. The national team had taken some stick for the 3-1 friendly defeat to Iceland on Friday evening. They travelled to Vaduz where they warmed-up for the World Cup qualifiers with a convincing 4-0 win over the Euro minnows, thanks to an Adams ' treble and a first for George Hirst. Clarke beamed: 'Yes, it's been a while since the strikers scored. I spoke to both of them before the game. 'I said, if ever there was a game where they could both play up top, this was it. 'If ever there was a game where they could both get on the score sheet, this was it, which is great. 'Obviously, in the second half, when I'm making the substitutions, I'm leaving Che on because he's got two. 'I think that's the first hat-trick for a Scottish striker or Scottish player since (John McGinn in) 2019 so it's nice for Che and it's nice for George to get off the mark internationally.' Clarke sensed a determination to get a much-needed friendly win. The national coach stated: 'Yes, I think so. That is one thing we spoke about in the dressing room was getting a fast start. Our players had a little bit of anger in the performance at the start of the game. "They knew that they'd let themselves down in the previous match. "So, it's that as well as getting the early goal which makes it more comfortable and it's nice to build on that with another three goals. "Teams may win here but not too many come and score four goals. So, that's nice.' Lennon Miller and Ross Doohan also made their first starts, Clarke was pleased with both. Clarke, speaking about Miller, admitted: 'Really good. I thought we were good in the midfield. 'It wasn't easy to pass the ball. The pitch was a bit sticky but both of them were at it. 'We know what Lennon can do. He's a big prospect for us. 'It's nice to get these players on the pitch at an early age where you can start to give them international experience. It's nice.' Doohan had cut short a family holiday in Turkey for this game. Clarke added: 'We saw his performance. With his experience, with the many clubs where he has already played, he showed a high performance today.' Scotland also gave debuts to Connor Barron, Josh Doig, Kieron Bowie and Andy Irving. He thinks it was a glimpse of the country's long-term future. The former Kilmarnock manager explained: 'We brought them to the second team, they played their first international games and they showed good performances. It's nice to have such young and fresh players in the team. 'Now it's up to them to make it difficult for me to leave them out of the squad. But I think if you look at the team that's on the pitch at the end of the game it's maybe a glimpse into the future.' 'They made it difficult for me to leave them out of the squad. They performed well in training. So I decided to switch them in the second half.' It was also confirmed assistant John Carver will be leaving his role to concentrate on his head coach role at Lechia Gdansk. Clarke confirmed: 'John's leaving. He's got a full-time contract, three years in Gdansk. So he's going to move on. The only surprise for me is that it's taken five years for somebody to take John off me. 'We came across each other way back in 1998 at Newcastle when I was a young coach and John was an even younger coach, we came across each other. He was looking after the younger players at Newcastle. We always said that we'd try and work together. It took us a long time to get there. But we did. He's been outstanding for us. 'For me as a head coach, John's been a fantastic assistant. Obviously, I wish him all the best in the future. 'Now I've got to start the job of looking to fill his shoes, and they are big shoes to fill.'

Liberty not content with 8-0 record as Sky visit
June 9 - New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu is not taking her team's best start in franchise history for granted. Ionescu, Breanna Stewart and the Liberty (8-0) will aim to keep rolling along on Tuesday when they host the Chicago Sky (2-5). "Obviously, 8-0 is great, but that's not what our goal is," Ionescu said. "(We're) going to take every single game and take it one by one and continue to try to get better." Stewart collected 26 points and 11 rebounds in the Liberty's 86-78 victory over the Washington Mystics on Thursday. The two-time WNBA MVP averages a team-high 19.1 points while Ionescu adds 17.3 points per game. All is not rosy for the Liberty, however, as star center Jonquel Jones sustained a right ankle injury on a layup in the first quarter against the Mystics. She did not return to the game. "Let's hope that it's not too bad that it'll keep her out," New York coach Sandy Brondello said after the game of Jones, the MVP of the 2024 WNBA Finals. The New York Post reported Sunday that Jones had not been ruled out for Tuesday's game. Jones contributes 13.9 points and a team-best 10.3 rebounds per game this season while shooting 42.9 percent from 3-point range. The Liberty could turn to Nyara Sabally should Jones be unable to play on Tuesday. Per Brondello, Sabally is poised to return to action following a six-game absence due to a right knee injury. Natasha Cloud scored 18 points, Ionescu had 16 and Stewart contributed 12 as the Liberty cruised to a 99-74 victory over the Sky on May 22 in Chicago. Courtney Vandersloot scored 14 points in that game. She was slated to receive a nice welcome Tuesday because she started at point guard for last year's WNBA champs, but the Sky star sustained a torn ACL Saturday in the team's 79-52 setback to the Indiana Fever. She will miss the remainder of the season. "It's heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking to watch anybody, but especially one of our teammates and someone that means as much as Sloot does to this team and organization," Hailey Van Lith said of Vandersloot, who averages 10.6 points and a team-high 5.3 assists. "Whatever is in store in the future for this team, I trust we will find a way to make this moment mean something in the end."
