Creecy says the has been a decrease in road crashes and fatalities across most provinces this Easter
JOHANNESBURG - There has been a significant decrease in road crashes and fatalities across most provinces during the Easter long weekend.
Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy revealed that while the Eastern Cape and Western Cape have recorded accident figures similar to last year, other provinces have seen a marked improvement.
Limpopo has emerged with the lowest number of collisions and fatalities during the easter period.

The Minister says full statistics will be released once the long weekend officially concludes.
'I don't want to issue statistics at this stage. I would prefer to issue them once the easter weekend is concluded because I don't want to jinx the very good record that we have had so far, but we can say that the fatalities and the crashes are showing a significant decrease in all provinces with the exception of Mpumalanga. '

Cederberg trails to urban daily duties When we received the Everest Sport to test, we had a solid month of driving lined up, including an Easter weekend in the Cederberg. The Sport variant hits a sweet spot for adventure-minded buyers who are happy to forgo the luxury trimmings of the Wildtrak or Platinum, but still want serious off-road capability. While the Sport doesn't include Ford's '4A' automatic all-wheel-drive mode (available in the higher-spec trims), it does offer selectable four-wheel high and low modes via the rotary dial next to the gear shifter. An electronic rear differential adds confidence for trickier trails. We've yet to take the Everest Sport into technical 4×4 territory, but the gravel roads of the Cederberg proved a good test of its light off-road ability and comfort. Fully loaded with passengers and camping gear, the SUV handled the terrain with ease. The suspension absorbed dirt road imperfections well, and the light all-terrain tyres delivered stable performance over corrugations and loose gravel. Related: Ford Everest Sport 4×4: Long Termer Introduction – Leisure Wheels Real-World Fuel Consumption One of the 2025 Everest Sport's highlights remains its drivetrain: the smooth, 10-speed automatic paired with Ford's familiar 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel. Last month, fuel consumption averaged 9.2L/100km. This month, largely limited to short city trips and uphill commutes in Cape Town, we're sitting at 10.8L/100km. While that's up, it's still respectable for a vehicle of this size and weight. Ford claims a combined fuel economy of 7.5L/100km, which we'll aim to test more accurately with some longer highway trips scheduled next month. Refined, Understated Design Two months in, I remain a fan of the Everest Sport's appearance. Finished in Aluminium Metallic with subtle black 'Sport' detailing, it strikes a clean yet assertive look. If you want to stand out a bit more, 'Blue Lightning' is the boldest option in an otherwise grey, black, white, and bronze-inspired colour palette. Three Highlights of the Ford Everest Sport 4×4 Even beyond the capable drivetrain and composed ride, there are a few standout details that make this SUV a strong daily driver. Quick-Access Lane Departure Control Being able to turn off the lane-departure prevention with a quick double click of one's left thumb on the steering wheel is such a pleasure. Many vehicles have overly-aggressive lane-assist safety features, which you have to dig around in the central infotainment system or digital display behind the steering wheel to turn off. Being able to do it on the fly is a massive bonus. Refinement and Responsiveness The sport's well-tuned suspension and responsive drivetrain make it an awesome daily driver, and it transfers this on-road elegance to off-road conditions too. Along with the drivetrain, the pedals are responsive and well-balanced, never lagging on acceleration nor too sensitive in stopping. The steering remains composed and precise for a vehicle of nearly five meters long. Well-Mannered Safety Features While some modern SUVs overwhelm drivers with overly sensitive warnings and interventions, the Everest Sport's safety features are intuitive and restrained. Race against time to clear 2025 drivers' licence backlog
According to the Department of Transport, the 2025 drivers' licence backlog now numbers 750 000 cards. Nevertheless, with the machine now back up and running, it says extra overtime shifts from staff will help clear the backlog … assuming the machine keeps functioning. It's advised that you keep your expired driver's licence and receipt of renewal as evidence if you are pulled over. Furthermore, the department listed the worst impacted provinces of the 2025 drivers' licence backlog. As The South African reported previously, the country's only printing machine died early in January, and has not worked since. According to previous statements by the department, this is the 160th breakdown in 25 years of operation. So far, the worst affected provinces for the 2025 drivers' licence backlog are: Gauteng: 252 745 KwaZulu-Natal: 115 020 Western Cape: 108 402 Mpumalanga: 66 833 Limpopo: 61 769 Eastern Cape: 55 393 North West: 39 983 Free State: 33 741 Northern Cape: 13 862 Nevertheless, with the printing machine back up a running, the Department of Transport (DOT) is confident it can clear the backlog. It says 14-hour shifts can print up to 19 000 drivers' licence cards at a time. However, the only limiting factor is available staff working overtime and if the ailing machine can keep working … As a result, working hours for staff members at the agency have been extended to ensure a reduction of the backlog. A tender for a new card machine was awarded to a company in September 2024. However, after a report by the Auditor-General (AG) found non-compliance in procurement processes, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy blocked the contract. Nevertheless, Wayne Duvenage of OUTA has also called on the DOT to extend the validity of driving licence cards from five to ten years in the meantime. He mentions that the DOT actually gazetted such a measure back in 2013, but since reversed it. Authorities investigating tragic KZN crash, death toll revised to 8
The H1 bakkie which was involved in the crash. | KZN Department of Transport Image: KZN Department of Transport The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the police are investigating the cause of a crash in which eight people, mostly mothers, tragically lost their lives in the early hours of Sunday morning along the N2 near the Mtunzini Toll Plaza. According to KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, the collision occurred at around 6:47am and involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1 vehicle transporting members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC). While Duma initially gave the death toll as nine, authorities later confirmed that one of the bodies had been mistakenly counted twice and the correct death toll was eight. The victims were part of a group of 24 congregants travelling to Dukuduku in Mtubatuba, in northern KZN when tragedy struck. Duma said that the tow truck struck the rear of the Hyundai H-1, resulting in multiple fatalities and serious injuries. 'Those who were injured have been taken to hospitals and we wish them a speedy recovery. Equally, we express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the Church,' he said. The National Department of Transport also expressed its condolences.
